7 Ways to Pay the IRS: Bank, Card, Wire, Check, Cash, or a Payment Plan

You can pay federal taxes through IRS Direct Pay, your IRS Online Account, a card or digital wallet, EFTPS if you already use it, a same-day wire, a mailed check or money order, or supported cash-payment channels. If you cannot pay in full, an IRS payment plan may give you more time. The right choice depends on the tax payment type, fees, timing, and whether you need to spread the balance over time.

Compare the seven ways to pay the IRS

Method Cost and access Best fit
IRS Direct Pay Free for individuals; guest access is available. Limits apply to supported payment types, timing, and payment frequency. A one-time or scheduled bank-account payment
IRS Online Account Bank-account payment for individuals; account access and eligible payment types matter. People who also want to review balances, payment history, or plan details
Debit card, credit card, or digital wallet IRS-listed processors charge fees; check current amounts before paying. Those who value card or wallet convenience and have compared fees with any rewards
EFTPS Free Treasury payment system; enrollment is required. New individual enrollments are no longer available in 2026. Existing EFTPS users, including those who schedule recurring payments
Same-day wire Your financial institution may charge a fee; availability and cutoff times vary. A payment that needs to reach the IRS quickly
Check or money order by mail Use the current IRS instructions for the return or notice; mailing details vary. Those who prefer to pay by mail
Cash through supported channels Available through IRS-supported methods, including retail partners; follow the current instructions. Those who need to pay in cash and can use a supported channel

Electronic funds withdrawal (EFW) is another way to arrange a bank debit when filing electronically, through tax software, a tax professional, or IRS e-filing. It is an e-file payment option rather than a separate payment network.

1. Pay from a bank account with IRS Direct Pay

Direct Pay lets individuals send a payment directly from a bank account without creating an IRS account. It is free, but it supports only listed payment types and reasons, so select the correct tax form, payment reason, and tax period before submitting. The IRS provides its [Direct Pay help page](https://www.irs.gov/payments/direct-pay-help) with supported choices and current limits.

As stated on the IRS help page updated June 26, 2026, Direct Pay lets you schedule a payment up to 365 days ahead, submit up to five payments in a 24-hour period, and make a single payment of up to $9,999,999.99. The IRS also describes a daily limit on its overview page; check the live Direct Pay instructions rather than assuming the per-payment maximum is the daily maximum.

A scheduled bank debit may occur after the date you select. If the withdrawal succeeds, the IRS generally credits the payment for the selected date, subject to exceptions such as large payments and scheduling after hours or on weekends. Save the confirmation number and verify the debit: IRS account posting may take up to two business days after the payment date, and a confirmation number confirms the withdrawal attempt, not that your bank completed it.

Paying through Direct Pay does not file your tax return. Submit the return separately, and do not assume the payment alone satisfies the filing requirement.

2. Pay through your IRS Online Account

Individuals can use an IRS Online Account to make a bank-account payment and review information such as the amount owed, payment history, payment-plan details, and pending or scheduled payments. Before relying on this route, confirm that you can access your account and that the payment type you need is supported. The IRS payment overview lists this and other methods at IRS payments.

3. Pay by debit card, credit card, or digital wallet

For most tax payments, you can use an IRS-listed processor to pay by debit card, credit card, or digital wallet. The processor charges a fee, and the amount can change; consult the IRS payment page for current processors and fees rather than relying on an old fee quote. Compare the fee with any card rewards or other benefits before deciding. A reward does not necessarily offset the processing charge.

4. Use EFTPS if you already have an account

The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) is a free Treasury service that supports scheduled payments, payment history, and voice-response access. As of 2026, individuals can no longer create new EFTPS accounts, although current users can continue using the system for now. The IRS directs most individual taxpayers to Direct Pay or an Online Account instead. See the IRS EFTPS guidance for current access information.

5. Send a same-day wire

A same-day wire can be useful when the payment needs to reach the IRS quickly. Use the IRS same-day wire worksheet and confirm with your bank or credit union that it can send the wire, its cutoff time, and its fee. A wire is not automatically same-day simply because you request one; the financial institution’s availability and processing deadlines matter. Follow the current IRS same-day wire instructions.

6. Mail a check or money order

The IRS accepts checks and money orders. Follow the instructions for the particular return, notice, or tax payment to confirm the payee, address, any required voucher, and identifying details. These requirements vary, so do not reuse an address or payment slip from another tax year or notice. Use the current directions on the IRS payment page or the instructions accompanying your notice.

7. Pay cash through a supported channel

The IRS accepts cash through supported methods, including participating retail partners. The steps and availability depend on the channel, so follow the current IRS cash-payment instructions before going to a location. Keep the receipt as proof of payment and check your IRS account or other payment records afterward. Start with the IRS payment options page for current instructions.

If you cannot pay in full

A payment plan is not simply another way to transfer money: it is an arrangement to pay an eligible balance over time. The IRS describes short-term plans for balances that can be paid within 180 days and long-term monthly installment agreements. Eligibility and application terms depend on your situation; review the current IRS Online Payment Agreement guidance.

The IRS page updated March 3, 2026, lists no setup fee for an online short-term plan. Long-term plan setup fees depend on payment method and application channel, with different fee treatment for qualifying low-income taxpayers. Penalties and interest continue to accrue until the balance is paid in full, so a plan does not stop those charges.

How to choose a payment method

  • Check the payment type first. Confirm the method accepts your tax form, tax period, and reason for payment.
  • Compare the total cost. Direct Pay and EFTPS are free, while card processors and banks may charge fees.
  • Match the method to your deadline. Consider bank processing, wire cutoff times, mailing time, and any scheduling requirements.
  • Check access requirements. Direct Pay offers guest access, an Online Account requires account access, and EFTPS requires an existing enrollment for individuals.
  • Keep proof and verify completion. Save confirmations or receipts, then check that the bank debit or payment posting occurred.
  • Decide whether you need time, not just a payment channel. If you cannot pay in full, examine plan eligibility and costs instead of choosing a faster transfer method alone.
