Easy link building means simple to start—not effortless or guaranteed. The safest approach is to earn relevant editorial links because your page helps a publisher’s readers. For a small business, freelancer, blogger, or personal-finance site, start with unlinked mentions and legitimate resource or local listings; then try broken-link outreach, expert requests, and a useful linkable asset.
A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Link building is the process of earning those links. Internal links connect pages on your own site, a referring domain is a distinct site linking to you, and an editorial link is included because an editor considers it useful. Sponsored or nofollow links may still send visitors and visibility, but they are qualified not to pass ordinary ranking credit. Google does not publish a simple “one link equals X ranking boost” formula.
Before you start: choose a page worth linking to
Outreach works only when the destination improves the reader’s experience. Select a stable, public URL with a clear audience, practical or original information, visible author or business details, and no aggressive sales pitch. For a finance site, that might be a budgeting worksheet, a carefully sourced explanation of credit utilization, or an original savings calculator—not a thin product page.
- Explain the page’s purpose in the first screen.
- Cite data and show the publication or update date.
- Make the page mobile-friendly and accessible.
- Use natural link text rather than forcing keywords; see Google’s link guidance.
1. Turn unlinked mentions into backlinks
This is usually the warmest tactic: the publisher already mentioned your brand, product, author, report, or quote. You are suggesting a useful reference, not asking a stranger to invent a reason to link.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFind and qualify mentions
- Search your brand or product name in quotation marks.
- Exclude your own domain from results.
- Open each plausible page and confirm the mention has no hyperlink.
- Check that a link would genuinely help readers. A general reference may not justify a commercial homepage link; a guide, study, or documentation page may fit better.
- Contact the author or site owner and record the request. Follow up once.

Subject: Small link correction on [article title]
Hi [Name],
Thanks for mentioning [brand/resource] in your article about [topic]. For readers who want to verify the reference or learn more, would you consider linking the mention to [specific page]?
#1 Best Overall
No problem if it does not fit the article—I just wanted to flag the most relevant destination.
Thanks,

A publisher may intentionally omit links, or the mention may describe a broad concept rather than your organization. Do not demand a followed link.
2. Replace broken or outdated links
Broken-link outreach helps an editor fix a real usability problem. Your replacement must serve the same purpose as the original resource, not merely contain the same keyword.

Process
- Find relevant guides, resource pages, and articles.
- Check outbound links for 404 errors, dead domains, redirects to irrelevant pages, or sources that are materially outdated.
- Work out what the original link was intended to provide.
- Create or identify a credible substitute that fulfills that intent.
- Email the editor with the exact broken URL and your replacement URL, asking for consideration.
Ahrefs’ backlink checker includes workflows for finding highly linked broken pages and filtering for 404 errors, although a paid database is not required for every small campaign.

Subject: Possible broken link on [page title]
Hi [Name],
I noticed that the link labeled “[anchor text]” on [page URL] currently leads to [404/error/irrelevant page].
This [guide/tool/report] covers the same subject and may work as a replacement: [URL]. I thought I’d flag it in case you are updating the page.
Rank #3

Common failure modes
- Your replacement is thinner, less authoritative, or more promotional than the original.
- The page is not broken; it only blocks a particular crawler.
- The publisher intentionally removed the source.
- The email becomes a disguised sales pitch.
3. Earn relevant resource-page and local-listing links
Legitimate opportunities include industry associations, chambers of commerce, local-government or community resources, university or nonprofit pages, professional directories with editorial standards, partner pages, and curated “helpful resources” lists.
Choose quality over quantity
- The organization or editor has a visible purpose and identifiable audience.
- Your business or content meets clear eligibility rules.
- The page helps people discover useful services or information.
- The site is not accepting every industry and hundreds of unrelated links.
- It does not require manipulative anchor text or payment for ranking credit.
Submission steps
- Search for relevant categories and organizations.
- Verify eligibility and use the official submission route.
- Prepare an accurate business description, name-address-phone details, logo, and preferred URL.
- Keep information consistent across legitimate profiles.
- Check the published listing for accuracy and duplicates.
For a local financial planner, an established chamber listing or community financial-literacy resource can be useful. “Submit your site to hundreds of directories” is not a substitute for relevance; pursue a listing for discovery and referral value first.
4. Answer expert and journalist requests
Editors, reporters, newsletter writers, podcast producers, and researchers often need a quote, example, data point, or explanation. A useful contribution may earn a citation, profile link, or brand mention, but a link is never guaranteed. Journalist-request services change names and availability, so evaluate each opportunity rather than relying on one platform.
Write a response editors can use
- Answer the question in the first sentence.
- Give one specific, supportable example or figure.
- State relevant credentials or firsthand experience without exaggerating.
- Explain why the insight matters.
- Include a website or profile only when requested or permitted.
Template: The most common mistake is [specific mistake]. In practice, [concise explanation]. For example, [brief substantiated example]. The better approach is [actionable recommendation]. I’m [role/credential], and I work with [relevant context]. — [Name]
Success rates can be low and deadlines short. A resulting mention may build recognition or referral traffic without passing ranking credit.

5. Create a linkable asset and promote it
A linkable asset is a page deliberately made useful to writers who need a source. Examples include original survey data, a free calculator, a template, benchmark, case study, visual explainer, maintained statistics page, public dataset, glossary, checklist, or narrowly focused free tool. Ahrefs describes linkable assets and the outreach used to put them in front of relevant people.
Best Value
Build something worth citing
- Identify a repeated question or information gap.
- Review existing results and note what they lack; make yours materially more useful, not merely longer.
- Add methodology, citations, author information, and an update date.
- Give the asset a stable URL and describe its usefulness in one sentence.
- Update it when the underlying facts change.
Promote it selectively
- List writers who have already covered the subject.
- Personalize each pitch around a specific existing article.
- Share through email, professional networks, relevant communities, and appropriate media outreach.
Template: Hi [Name], I saw your section on [specific subject] in [article]. We created [asset], which includes [distinctive usefulness]. It may help readers who need [specific outcome]. The methodology or data source is explained here: [URL]. Either way, I thought it might be relevant to your coverage.

Use this checklist before contacting anyone:
- Is the site and page topically relevant?
- Would the link make sense if search engines did not exist?
- Does the page have a real audience, search visibility, or referral potential?
- Is it written for people rather than packed with outbound links?
- Is there an identifiable business, editor, author, or organization?
- Is the page indexed and publicly accessible?
- Is the link surrounded by relevant context?
- Does the site accept links indiscriminately from every industry?
Domain Rating, Domain Authority, and “toxic” scores are third-party estimates, not Google measurements. Ahrefs explains why it does not provide a universal spam score.
Link-building tactics to avoid
- Private blog networks and automated backlink software.
- Mass directory submissions, comment links, forum or profile spam, and web-2.0 spam.
- Keyword-stuffed anchor text and contracts requiring followed links.
- Guest posts whose primary purpose is passing ranking credit rather than serving the publication’s audience.
Guest posting can be legitimate when the article is genuinely editorial and the link is incidental or appropriately qualified. “Free” does not automatically mean safe.
A simple 30-day plan
Week 1: prepare
- Choose one commercially or strategically important page.
- Improve or create one supporting resource.
- Set up Google Search Console.
- Create a spreadsheet with prospect URL, contact or submission route, relevance reason, suggested destination, contact date, follow-up date, outcome, link type, and status.
Week 2: find low-friction prospects
- Unlinked mentions.
- Existing partners and associations.
- Broken links.
- Relevant local or niche resource pages.
- Expert-source requests.
Weeks 3–4: send and learn
- Write each message individually and name the exact page.
- Explain the reader benefit and suggest one relevant URL.
- Follow up once after a reasonable interval.
- Accept no or silence; do not send bulk automated campaigns.
- Review which prospects produced useful visits or responses and refine the next list.
How to measure progress
Track outcomes beyond the number of acquired links:
- New referring domains and relevant linking pages.
- Referral sessions, leads, and sales.
- Brand mentions and citations.
- Impressions, clicks, and rankings for the target page.
- Indexing and crawl status.
- Whether links remain live over time.
Search Console shows links Google discovered, but it is not a complete, real-time backlink index. Do not treat its export as an exhaustive inventory. Most sites do not need Google’s Disavow Links tool; Google says to consider it mainly after a manual action or when serious manipulative links cannot be removed. See Google’s disavow guidance and its manual-action guidance.
Which strategy should you try first?
| Strategy | Best for | Main advantage | Main drawback | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unlinked mentions | Established brands and authors | Warm outreach | Requires existing mentions | Low |
| Broken-link replacement | Useful content libraries | Fixes a visible problem | True substitutes take time to find | Low–medium |
| Resource and local listings | Local firms and specialized organizations | Clear eligibility path | Many directories are poor quality | Low |
| Expert requests | People with genuine expertise | Potential editorial coverage | Competitive and deadline-driven | Medium |
| Linkable assets | Sites able to create data, tools, or research | Compounding long-term value | Creation and promotion require effort | Medium |
Start with unlinked mentions if people already discuss your work. If you are local or belong to a professional organization, add carefully chosen listings. Move to broken-link outreach and a linkable asset as your useful content library grows.
