The available comparison supports a review of five cash management accounts—not a verified list of seven. Wealthfront, Betterment, Empower, Vanguard and Fidelity differ in how cash earns a return, how readily you can spend it, and what protections apply. The rates below are figures displayed by NerdWallet on October 4, 2026, not guaranteed current offers; check each provider’s live terms before opening an account.

Five accounts at a glance

This table reproduces NerdWallet’s displayed ratings, monthly fees and yields as of October 4, 2026. Ratings are the publisher’s editorial assessments, and APYs may be variable, promotional or conditional. They are not a like-for-like promise of what every customer will earn.

Account NerdWallet rating Monthly fee Displayed yield and minimum
Wealthfront Cash Account 4.5/5 $0 Up to 4.55% APY: 3.55% base rate plus conditional or time-limited boosts; see NerdWallet’s comparison (2026).
Betterment Cash Reserve 4.4/5 $0 4.25% APY displayed; $10 minimum balance for APY. The higher rate is promotional and the base rate is variable; see NerdWallet’s comparison (2026).
Empower Personal Cash 3.6/5 $0 3.50% APY displayed; $0 minimum for APY; see NerdWallet’s comparison (2026).
Vanguard Cash Plus 3.5/5 $0, though other account fees may apply 3.50% APY displayed; $0 minimum for APY; see NerdWallet’s comparison (2026).
Fidelity Cash Management Account 4.4/5 $0 3.49% APY displayed; $0 minimum for APY; see NerdWallet’s comparison (2026).

The table is a dated snapshot, not a ranking by guaranteed return. Wealthfront’s “up to” figure includes boosts, and Betterment’s displayed rate is promotional. For all five, rates can change; compare the current provider disclosure and the exact conditions attached to any advertised yield.

Which account may fit your needs?

Wealthfront Cash Account: everyday access alongside a cash yield

Wealthfront says it is not a bank and uses program banks for its Cash Account. Its account page lists a debit card, access to more than 19,000 ATMs, two monthly out-of-network ATM fee reimbursements up to $7.50 each, free wire transfers, bill payment, checks, mobile deposits and transfers to investing features. See Wealthfront’s account details for current availability and terms.

The advertised maximum in the comparison includes conditional or time-limited boosts rather than only the stated 3.55% base rate. Consider the account if its payment and transfer tools suit your routine, but judge the yield using the rate and eligibility rules that apply to you—not the maximum headline figure.

Betterment Cash Reserve: cash sweep tied to a brokerage relationship

Cash Reserve is a cash sweep program that requires a Betterment Securities brokerage account. Eligible cash is deposited at one or more FDIC-insured program banks. Betterment’s disclosure describes potential aggregate coverage of up to $4 million for individual accounts and $8 million for joint accounts after funds reach program banks, subject to conditions and aggregation with other deposits held at those banks. Funds in transit and brokerage-held funds have different protection treatment. Read Betterment’s Cash Reserve disclosure for the program’s terms.

The comparison’s 4.25% APY is promotional, and NerdWallet says the base rate is variable. The stated $10 minimum is the minimum balance for APY in that comparison, not a promise that the displayed rate will persist.

Empower Personal Cash: compare the live rate and account terms

NerdWallet displayed a 3.50% APY and no minimum to earn APY for Empower Personal Cash in its 2026 comparison. The material available here does not establish detailed official terms for its cash access, protection structure or other charges. Review Empower’s current product disclosures on those points before treating the comparison rate as sufficient grounds to choose it.

Vanguard Cash Plus: consider the broader fee picture

NerdWallet displayed a 3.50% APY with no minimum to earn APY and no monthly fee for Vanguard Cash Plus, while noting that other account fees may apply. The available comparison does not establish detailed official terms for access features or protection. Check Vanguard’s current disclosures for the account’s specific mechanics and any charges relevant to your use.

Fidelity Cash Management Account: spending and brokerage features

Fidelity describes its Cash Management Account as a brokerage account that supports debit-card purchases and withdrawals, bill payment, check writing, direct deposit, mobile check deposit and transfers between eligible Fidelity accounts. Fidelity says it is available to Fidelity customers, has no account fee or minimum balance, and offers unlimited ATM reimbursements. Its page also says that for accounts opened on or after September 28, 2026, eligible investments are limited to fixed-income products and Fidelity money-market mutual funds. Check Fidelity’s account overview for current terms.

Fidelity offers an FDIC-insured deposit sweep option as well as money-market fund options. Those are not interchangeable: Fidelity explicitly says SPAXX is not FDIC insured and is subject to market risk. SIPC protection does not cover market losses.

How to compare yield, access and fees

Find out what earns the return

An APY on eligible bank deposits is different from the yield on a money-market fund or another investment. A cash management account can offer checking-like features without being a bank deposit account. Identify the exact cash position holding your money, whether its rate is variable or promotional, and whether eligibility depends on a qualifying deposit, balance or other condition.

Match access features to how you use cash

List the functions you actually need: debit-card spending, ATM access, checks, bill pay, direct deposit, mobile deposit, wires and transfers to investments. A headline yield has limited practical value if moving money or paying bills does not work the way you need. Confirm transfer timing and any transaction limits in the provider’s current terms; the cited comparison does not supply those details for every account.

Look beyond a $0 monthly fee

A $0 monthly fee does not mean every service is free. Check for other account charges, minimums for earning APY, ATM reimbursement limits, and rate conditions. For example, the comparison lists no minimum for APY at Empower, Vanguard and Fidelity, a $10 APY minimum at Betterment, and conditional boosts above Wealthfront’s stated base rate.

What protection applies to the cash?

Protection depends on where the money is held and its status at that moment. FDIC insurance applies to eligible deposits at insured banks, subject to ownership-category limits and applicable rules; it is not blanket insurance for every balance shown in an app. Where a provider uses a sweep, funds generally need to reach a participating bank before bank-deposit coverage can apply. Deposits held at the same bank in the same ownership capacity must be considered together.

Wealthfront’s February 10, 2026 sweep disclosure says funds are generally swept to participating bank deposit accounts on the next business day after receipt, though it can take longer. Until the sweep, funds may be eligible for SIPC protection; after reaching a participating bank, they may be eligible for FDIC pass-through insurance subject to conditions. See Wealthfront’s sweep program disclosure.

Betterment likewise distinguishes eligible cash deposited at program banks from funds in transit or held in a brokerage account. Its advertised aggregate coverage capacity does not guarantee that every customer will receive that amount: other deposits at program banks, ownership category, fund location and program conditions matter.

SIPC protection and FDIC insurance serve different purposes. SIPC may protect customer property in a brokerage failure within its rules, but it does not insure investments against losses in value. A money-market fund such as SPAXX is an investment, not an FDIC-insured bank deposit.

Cash management account or high-yield savings account?

The label alone does not settle the difference. A cash management account often combines cash yield with payment or brokerage features, and the underlying funds may be held at partner banks, in a brokerage cash position or in an investment. A high-yield savings account is typically a bank deposit product. Compare the legal holder of the cash, withdrawal and payment functions, applicable insurance, rate conditions and fees rather than assuming every account with “cash” in its name works the same way.

How to choose

  1. Decide the job for the money. Separate day-to-day spending cash from reserves you do not need to access frequently.
  2. Check the current yield and its conditions. Confirm the live base rate, promotional period, qualifying requirements and minimum balance directly with the provider.
  3. Verify the account mechanics. Confirm access features, transfer timing, fees and whether another brokerage account or existing customer relationship is required.
  4. Trace the protection. Determine whether your balance is at a bank, waiting to be swept, held as brokerage cash or invested in a money-market fund; then read the relevant disclosure.
  5. Compare total fit, not just the displayed APY. Choose the account whose access, structure and ongoing terms suit your use, even if another account shows a higher temporary rate.
