It is not the deadline for everyone: most taxpayers’ original filing and payment deadline was April 15, 2026.
Which 2025 federal tax deadline applies to you?
| Date | What it means for most calendar-year individual filers |
|---|---|
| April 15, 2026 | Ordinary deadline to file a 2025 federal individual income-tax return and generally pay any tax due. IRS Publication 17 (2025) |
| October 15, 2026 | General extended filing deadline for those who timely requested an automatic extension. The extension does not extend the time to pay. IRS newsroom guidance, April 14, 2026 |
These dates concern U.S. federal individual returns for calendar-year taxpayers. State return deadlines are separate, and fiscal-year filers, some taxpayers living abroad, people serving in combat zones, and qualifying disaster-affected taxpayers may have different dates or rules.
What to do if your return is still unfiled
If you requested an extension by April 15
For most calendar-year individual filers, a timely extension generally gives until October 15 to file. Confirm that you actually requested it; missing the original deadline does not by itself establish that you have an extension. File as soon as you can rather than waiting until the last day.
If you did not request an extension
The ordinary deadline has passed. The IRS advises people who missed the filing deadline to submit their return promptly. If you are due a refund, filing may still be important to claim it and any eligible credits; check IRS guidance for the rules that apply to your situation. IRS Tax Tip 2026-32

If you owe tax
An extension gives extra time to file, not extra time to pay. The IRS states, “An extension provides extra time to file, not additional time to pay.” Tax was generally due April 15, 2026; unpaid balances may accrue interest and penalties. Pay what you can, then review the IRS payment-plan options if you cannot pay the full amount. IRS extension guidance and IRS guidance for missed deadlines

Do not assume October 15 applies if your circumstances differ from those of a typical calendar-year filer. Certain U.S. citizens and residents outside the country generally had an automatic two-month filing extension to June 15, 2026, and may request additional time. Fiscal-year filers calculate deadlines from the end of their tax year. Disaster relief can also postpone deadlines for eligible people in specifically named areas; the relief is location- and event-specific.

Check the IRS rules for your filing situation, the IRS disaster-relief announcements for any qualifying area, and your state tax agency for state deadlines. An IRS disaster announcement for one area does not establish relief elsewhere.
