New York insurtech 1Fort announced an oversubscribed $7.5 million seed round on April 17, 2025, led by Bonfire Ventures. The company says the financing brought total funding to $10 million at the time; its current site says it is backed by more than $10 million. 1Fort is not an insurance carrier. It is building an AI-enabled operating layer for brokers that handles much of the work between a client’s first submission and a bound commercial policy.
That distinction is central. 1Fort is trying to make commercial insurance distribution faster and less administrative—not replace insurers, set every premium, or guarantee that a business has adequate coverage.
The commercial-insurance problem 1Fort is targeting
A small-business policy can require far more than a single online form. A broker may need to collect revenue, payroll, operations, property, vehicle, cybersecurity, financial and claims information; re-enter it into several carrier applications; answer supplemental questionnaires; compare limits, deductibles, exclusions and endorsements; prepare a proposal; obtain signatures; arrange payment or financing; and service the policy after issuance.
That manual workload makes small accounts difficult to handle profitably. It also leaves brokers less time for the work that cannot be reduced to data entry: understanding a client’s exposures, selecting limits and explaining what a policy does not cover.

1Fort’s funding announcement argues that 70% of businesses rely on brokers and that 75% remain underinsured, which it uses to estimate nearly 24 million exposed businesses. Those figures are company-provided; the announcement does not independently establish the population, survey year or calculation behind the estimate. 1Fort’s funding release attributes the broker-reliance figure to Hiscox.
“Underinsured” is broader than uninsured. A business can have a policy yet still face limits below a plausible loss, missing endorsements, unsuitable classifications, inadequate business-interruption coverage, or exclusions for risks such as cyber incidents, employment claims or professional errors.
What 1Fort actually does
The company describes itself as a technology business rather than an insurance carrier. Its platform is designed for agencies and brokers, who remain responsible for advice and client relationships. A typical workflow looks like this:
- Intake: Broker or client information is collected in the platform.
- Application completion: The system uses that information to populate carrier applications and supplemental forms.
- Market access: It retrieves quotes from direct and specialty markets available through the broker’s relationships or 1Fort’s market-access arrangements.
- Comparison: AI analyzes quotes and highlights differences for the broker to review.
- Proposal: The agency creates a client-facing or white-labeled proposal.
- Binding: The workflow manages subjectivities, signatures and required documents.
- Billing: Invoices and payment or financing steps are coordinated.
- Servicing: Portals, reminders, reporting, policy checking and automated communications support the account after placement.
Current product materials advertise automation for submissions, quoting, proposals, cross-selling, billing, reporting, email, policy checking and client portals. 1Fort’s product page describes the broader workflow, while the company’s homepage explains that it is not the carrier.

Who buys it—and who does not
The primary customer is an insurance agency or brokerage. A small-business owner may encounter 1Fort through a broker’s portal or communications, but the product is not necessarily a direct-to-consumer insurer.
1Fort’s broker offering says agencies can use appointed markets, access specialty lines, act as broker of record, or earn commission on certain market-access business. The broker page also makes clear that the company’s model combines software with market access in some cases.
That makes the buyer question straightforward:
- Agency looking to process more recurring small-commercial submissions: 1Fort may be relevant.
- Business owner seeking a policy directly: A digital broker or insurer may be the more appropriate comparison.
- Complex specialty broker: Automation may help with routine work, but manuscript coverage and unusual underwriting still require substantial human involvement.
Which insurance lines are involved?
April 2025 coverage described expansion beyond cyber insurance into technology errors and omissions, professional liability, management liability, general liability and workers’ compensation. Current company pages also promote business owners policies, commercial auto, cyber, umbrella and other commercial lines.
Availability is not uniform. A line may depend on the state, carrier appointment, underwriting appetite, risk characteristics and the individual broker relationship. Marketing coverage across multiple lines should not be read as a promise that every business can obtain every product nationwide.

Why cyber insurance was an important starting point
Cyber applications often ask about multifactor authentication, endpoint detection and response, firewalls, email security, encryption, patching, security training and incident response. A platform that gathers this information can reduce repetitive application work and identify missing controls.
1Fort also markets a business cyber-readiness product. Its public pricing page lists a free basic tier and a paid tier at $24 per user per month, with separately displayed add-ons for endpoint detection and response, email security, patch management and security training. The pricing page presents this as security-readiness functionality associated with cyber-insurance access, not as a complete insurance policy.
Automation and risk improvement are different outcomes. Better forms do not guarantee eligibility, lower premiums, broader limits or coverage without exclusions. Underwriters still evaluate the controls, the business and the policy terms.

What it costs an agency
Public pricing provides a starting point, not a guaranteed total cost:
| Charge | Publicly listed amount |
|---|---|
| Essentials plan | Starts at $500 per month |
| Program processing | 3% |
| Card payments | 3.5% |
| ACH or wire payments | 1% |
| Premium and Enterprise | Custom pricing |
The break-even calculation depends on an agency’s submission volume, staff cost, commissions, processing volume and implementation burden. A $500 monthly subscription could be economical for a high-volume agency and difficult to justify for a low-volume one. The public page does not establish guaranteed savings or return on investment.
Where the platform may help
- Agencies repeating similar small-commercial submissions across several carriers.
- Teams spending substantial time rekeying applications, chasing documents and preparing proposals.
- Brokers seeking a client portal, automated reminders or cross-selling workflows.
- Agencies that want to increase quote capacity without adding staff at the same rate.
- Businesses that need help documenting cyber controls before applying for coverage.
Where caution is warranted
Speed does not equal better coverage
An AI comparison can make two quotes look alike while missing a sublimit, waiting period, retroactive date, claims-made trigger, contractual-liability provision, business-interruption calculation, additional-insured requirement or state-specific endorsement. Human review remains essential.

Bad data can be automated at scale
Incomplete intake, an incorrect industry classification or outdated payroll and revenue can produce inappropriate quotes faster. Agencies should confirm who approves every application, how contradictions are flagged and whether edits are logged.
Market access can create incentives
The company advertises direct-market placement and a 20% commission opportunity on certain specialty lines. Agencies should clarify who owns the customer relationship, who controls renewals, how commissions are divided and how options are presented when 1Fort is both software provider and market-access intermediary.
State and carrier constraints remain
Carrier appetite changes, state rules and risk-specific eligibility can remove an option after an initial quote. Complex risks may still require inspections, negotiation or manual underwriting.
Data governance needs due diligence
Commercial submissions contain sensitive financial, operational, employee and cybersecurity information. 1Fort says it uses read-only, non-invasive integrations, gives brokers and insureds control over sharing, and maintains SOC 2 compliance through an independent auditor. Those are company statements; a buyer should ask about retention, model training, subprocessors, breach notification, tenant isolation, permissions and whether client data is used to improve models. The company’s pricing and FAQ page provides its published statements.

Claims outcomes are a separate question
Faster placement does not demonstrate faster claims payment, better claims handling or broader protection. 1Fort’s role is primarily distribution and workflow; insurers and other risk-bearing entities still determine policy terms and handle claims.
How a small agency should evaluate 1Fort
- Measure current hours per submission, quote, bind and renewal before adopting new software.
- List the agency-management, comparative-rating, CRM, document and billing systems that must integrate.
- Request a line-by-line explanation of carrier appointments, market access, commissions and broker-of-record responsibilities.
- Test policy comparisons against exclusions, sublimits, endorsements, claims-made provisions and business-interruption terms—not just premium.
- Review security documentation and contractual responsibility for inaccurate AI-generated applications or recommendations.
- Model the subscription and transaction fees against realistic incremental submissions and commissions.
- Pilot the workflow on routine risks before using it for highly bespoke accounts.
Bottom line
1Fort’s most credible near-term opportunity is not “AI replaces insurance.” It is using AI to reduce the operational cost of placing commercial insurance so brokers can process more small-business accounts and spend more time on coverage judgment. The $7.5 million round gives the company capital to expand that workflow and its carrier network, but its headline performance figures and underinsurance estimate remain company-reported. Agencies should evaluate the product as broker software and market access—not as a carrier, a claims guarantee or a substitute for professional advice.
