The right classifieds site depends on what you’re listing and how you want to complete the transaction. For local pickup, start with Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Nextdoor, or a neighborhood buy/sell group. For shipped resale, consider eBay or Mercari; for housing, use housing-focused search sites; and for cars, look at dedicated auto marketplaces. The 18 options below are a practical shortlist—not a verified popularity ranking—because comparable national audience or transaction data is not available across all of them.
How to choose a classifieds site
First decide whether you want a nearby buyer for an in-person exchange, a wider audience willing to buy and receive an item by shipping, or a specialist audience for a job, vehicle, or property. A large national brand does not guarantee active buyers in your town or category.
- Match the category: general goods, clothing, vehicles, rentals, home sales, jobs, and services may perform better on different platforms.
- Check the transaction model: local pickup suits bulky goods; shipping can make niche items available to distant buyers.
- Review costs before posting: free browsing or posting does not necessarily mean every listing, promotion, or completed sale is free.
- Check trust and dispute tools: understand messaging, payment handling, returns, and whether you’ll complete the exchange on or off the platform.
Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Nextdoor, eBay, Oodle, Facebook Groups, and Mercari are general or resale options, but they do not all work the same way. Craigslist describes itself as a collection of local communities, while eBay is more suited to national or international fixed-price and auction transactions. OfferUp supports local in-person deals and also offers paid features. Activity and rules can vary by community and listing type.
General local listings and resale
Craigslist
Craigslist covers local categories including jobs, items for sale, apartments, and community listings. The company says the service began with San Francisco event emails in 1995 and grew into a “collection of communities with similar spirit, not a single monolithic entity.” Its mission page says charges apply except for job postings; check the live city and category flow rather than assuming one fee rule covers every listing.

Facebook Marketplace
Facebook Marketplace is a general, social-integrated option for finding local goods. Its usefulness depends on the supply and activity in your area and on how you prefer to coordinate with buyers or sellers.
OfferUp
OfferUp is a U.S.-available marketplace for local buying and selling. Its support page, updated August 31, 2026, says browsing, posting, and chat are free, while paid options can include promotions, additional listing allotments after the monthly free amount, Premium, and job or service listings. The company says it does not charge fees or take commission on in-person transactions. OfferUp’s undated corporate homepage, accessed October 4, 2026, reports 40M+ active users nationwide and 30M+ annual transactions; the page does not specify the measurement period for those figures, so they should not be treated as comparable third-party measurements.
Nextdoor
Nextdoor is a neighborhood-focused option. It may be useful when you want nearby buyers, but local participation determines how many potential buyers will see a listing.
eBay
eBay is a better fit than a purely local classifieds site when you want to reach buyers beyond your immediate area, including through auctions or fixed-price listings. Consider shipping, listing terms, and transaction costs before choosing it for an item you could otherwise sell locally.

Oodle
Oodle is another classifieds and aggregation option to consider if you want an additional general listing destination. Verify its current categories and listing terms on the site before relying on it for a particular item.
Facebook Groups
Facebook Groups can connect you with community-specific buy/sell groups. Search for relevant local groups and read their rules; membership, listing standards, and activity differ from group to group.
Mercari
Mercari is a resale marketplace to consider for items that may appeal beyond your local area. Check its current categories, seller terms, and transaction costs before listing.
Housing listings
For an apartment or home, use a housing-oriented search service rather than assuming a general classifieds feed will provide the filters or property context you need. Listings, fees, and search features can differ, so confirm current details on the relevant platform.
Rank #3
Zillow
Zillow is a real estate and rental search option. Zillow Group’s corporate page references U.S. internet traffic and says its underlying internal data is as of February 2026; that is not a third-party comparison or proof of a classifieds ranking.
Apartments.com
Apartments.com is an apartment-search candidate for people focused on rentals. Check current listing details and availability directly with the platform or property contact.
Realtor.com
Realtor.com is a housing-search option for home sales and rentals. Compare property details and contact information rather than relying on the site name alone to establish a listing’s accuracy.
Vehicle listings
Dedicated auto marketplaces make it easier to search by vehicle criteria than a general classifieds site. Compare the listing details, seller type, and location before arranging a viewing or purchase.

Autotrader
Autotrader serves dealers and private-party sellers throughout the United States, and buyers can search by ZIP code. Its undated corporate about page, accessed October 4, 2026, reports more than 3 million vehicle listings from 40,000 dealers and 250,000 private owners, and more than 14 million qualified buyers each month. These are Autotrader’s own figures, not an independent audit or a comparable measurement for competing sites.
Cars.com
Cars.com is another vehicle marketplace to consider when comparing dealer and private-party listings. Review individual listings and seller details to determine whether a vehicle meets your needs.
CarGurus
CarGurus is a vehicle-listing option for shoppers comparing cars. Check the listing, seller, and location directly before making plans to see a vehicle.

ZipRecruiter
ZipRecruiter is another jobs-focused option. Compare the roles and employers shown for your search rather than assuming coverage or fees are the same across markets.
Craigslist Jobs
Craigslist Jobs provides job listings within Craigslist’s local framework. Craigslist’s mission page says job postings are excepted from its stated charges, but check the current city and category flow for applicable terms.
Fashion resale
Poshmark
Poshmark is a fashion-focused resale candidate. Check its current categories and seller terms before deciding whether it suits the clothing or accessories you want to list.
Safety and costs when selling locally
OfferUp’s safety post dated January 7, 2026, recommends meeting in a well-lit public place with other people and camera surveillance when not using an official meetup spot, and advises against meeting at private residences. It reported 1,960 Community MeetUp Spots across the nation at publication time; that company-reported figure does not eliminate the risks of an in-person exchange.
For a local sale, agree on the item, price, and meeting place in the platform’s messaging where possible. Review payment arrangements before meeting, avoid sharing unnecessary personal information, and do not treat a platform’s safety guidance or meetup locations as a guarantee.
For any platform, distinguish free browsing or posting from paid promotion, listing limits, category charges, and sale commissions. Terms can change, so confirm them in the current listing flow before publishing an ad or accepting a transaction.
