The best mother-of-the-bride shoes are the ones you can wear confidently on the wedding-day surfaces and that work with your outfit, fit, and budget. The Knot’s 16 picks span flats, sandals, pumps, wedges, boots, and several heel heights; its guide was updated January 31, 2024, so treat listed prices and availability as historical, not current shopping quotes. Check the retailer for today’s price, stock, sizes, and widths before buying.
How to choose shoes for the wedding
Use the venue, heel comfort, dress hem, and total cost to narrow the options before settling on a style. A shoe that looks right in a product photo may not suit the ground or your foot, and comfort descriptions are not guarantees of fit.
Start with the venue surface
- Grass or cobblestones: The Knot suggests a block heel or flat rather than a narrow stiletto; Jovani also recommends block heels or wedges for outdoor settings. These are practical styling suggestions, not a promise that a shoe will never sink or slip. The Knot’s shoe guide and Jovani’s buying guide discuss venue considerations.
- Sand: Jovani suggests a dressy flat sandal. A wedge is another outdoor option in its guidance, but consider the actual ground and how steady you feel in the shoe.
- Indoor floors: You have more heel styles to consider, but still choose a height and width you can comfortably manage through the event.
Choose heel height and fit for your own feet
The Knot advises choosing a heel height and width that feel comfortable, then trying the shoes on and breaking them in before the wedding. A two-inch kitten or block heel can be a reasonable place to start if you want some height, but no source establishes one universally comfortable heel height. Check whether the shoe is available in your size and width, and pay attention to toe shape, strap adjustment, cushioning, and how securely it stays on your foot.
Coordinate shoes with the dress—and the hem
Neutral shades such as nude, silver, and gold can complement many dress colors, while Jovani suggests gold or champagne with warm palettes and silver or pewter with cool colors. Matching the shoe metal to embellishments is an option, not a rule. Choose or settle on the shoes before the alterations fitting and bring them along: the hem is pinned to the heel height worn at the fitting. If you expect to change shoes later, discuss that with the tailor before the hem is set.

A practical try-on checklist
- Confirm the setting: Check whether you will walk on grass, sand, cobblestones, or indoor floors, and shortlist heel types accordingly.
- Try the exact shoe: Check fit, width, toe comfort, strap security, and how steady you feel standing and walking. Do not rely on a cushioning or arch-support description as proof of personal comfort.
- Wear it in beforehand: The Knot recommends trying the shoes on and breaking them in ahead of the wedding.
- Bring the shoes to alterations: Have the hem set with the shoes you plan to wear, or tell the tailor if you may switch to a different heel height.
- Verify the purchase details: Confirm the exact model, size, width, color, price, and return terms on the retailer’s current listing before ordering.
