There is no single best course platform in 2026. Choose based on how you will sell and deliver learning: Thinkific or Teachable for a conventional creator business, Kajabi for an all-in-one marketing stack, LearnWorlds for interactive instruction, Circle, Mighty Networks or Skool for community-led memberships, LearnDash or Moodle for ownership and control, and Udemy or Skillshare for marketplace discovery.

The products below are not interchangeable. A marketplace, self-hosted LMS, cohort classroom and creator storefront solve different problems. Prices and plan details cited here were checked August 18, 2026; annual prices are labeled, and you should confirm the live offer before subscribing.

Choose the type of course business first

Start with the business model, not a feature checklist.

  • One or several self-paced courses: Thinkific, Teachable, Podia or LearnWorlds.
  • Courses plus funnels, email and memberships: Kajabi.
  • Course plus a paid community: Circle, Mighty Networks or Skool.
  • Cohort or instructor-led programs: Teachfloor or TrainerCentral.
  • Employee, partner or customer training: TalentLMS, Moodle or a suitably configured LearnWorlds deployment.
  • Maximum website and data control: LearnDash on WordPress or Moodle.
  • Built-in audience discovery: Udemy or Skillshare.
  • A small course or tutorial sold beside downloads: Gumroad.

Hosted platforms reduce maintenance but create dependence on a vendor’s pricing, terms and export capabilities. Self-hosted systems provide more control while making you responsible for hosting, security, updates, integrations and backups. Marketplaces can supply demand but give you less control over pricing, branding and customer relationships.

16 course creation tools, reviewed by use case

1. Thinkific: best overall hosted platform for a serious course business

Thinkific is the strongest default when you expect to sell multiple courses, memberships, coaching, communities or downloads from a branded site. Its product scope includes course creation, communities, memberships, coaching, email automation, analytics and branded mobile options. See Thinkific’s plans for current limits and pricing.

Best fit: An independent expert building an owned academy. Do not choose it if: Your primary requirement is a fully automated funnel and CRM stack, where Kajabi may reduce tool sprawl.

2. Teachable: best for straightforward course selling

Teachable combines hosted checkout, student apps, certificates, upsells, cart recovery, affiliate tools, global payments and tax features. Starter is $39 monthly or $29 per month billed annually, includes five products and charges a 7.5% transaction fee. Builder is $89 monthly or $69 annually and Growth is $189 monthly or $139 annually, both with a 0% platform transaction fee. Teachable separately lists U.S. card processing at 2.9% + $0.30 and international card processing at 3.9% + $0.30. Details are at Teachable pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: A beginner who wants hosted payments and student delivery. Do not choose it if: The Starter percentage fee would materially erode high-volume sales.

3. Kajabi: best all-in-one creator-business platform

Kajabi combines courses, offers, websites, email campaigns, funnels, memberships and coaching. Basic is $143 per month billed annually ($179 monthly), Growth is $199 annually billed ($249 monthly), and Pro is $399 annually billed ($499 monthly). Basic lists five products, 2,500 contacts, one website, one community and two administrators; higher tiers expand those limits. Kajabi advertises no revenue sharing, but its trial promotions can vary. Check the current plan page.

Best fit: An established seller replacing several marketing tools. Do not choose it if: You are validating a single low-priced course.

4. Podia: best simple value option

Podia bundles courses, downloads, coaching, memberships, websites, landing pages, checkout, tax support and integrations. Mover is $42 per month annually with a 5% transaction fee; Shaker is $84 and Earthquaker $150, both annually billed with no platform transaction fee. Email-subscriber allowances differ by plan, so “email marketing included” does not mean unlimited contacts. See Podia’s pricing.

Best fit: A solopreneur who values a short setup path. Do not choose it if: You need deep learning administration or complex compliance reporting.

5. LearnWorlds: best for interactive learning

LearnWorlds is designed for video-heavy, assessment-rich and branded learning experiences. Its positioning includes interactive video, structured assessments, certificates and SCORM-related capabilities. That makes it a better candidate than a basic creator storefront for academies and customer education, although the exact standard, reporting and plan level must be verified. Review LearnWorlds plans.

Best fit: Interactive courses, formal academies and SCORM-oriented programs. Do not choose it if: You only need to upload videos and collect payment.

6. Mighty Networks: best course-plus-community business

Mighty Networks is community-first: courses, events, member profiles, badges, tags, gamification and automations are built around recurring participation. Launch is $79 per month and Scale $179; Mighty Pro is custom priced. Scale adds broader integrations, automations, event charging and API/MCP access. See Mighty Networks pricing.

Best fit: Memberships where peer interaction and events drive retention. Do not choose it if: SCORM, complex prerequisites or institutional reporting are core requirements.

7. Circle: best premium community with courses

Circle combines discussions, courses, events, live streams, live rooms, website building, paid memberships, gamification, analytics, custom branding and a custom domain. Professional is $89 monthly with a 2% transaction fee; Business is $199 with 1%; Circle Plus is custom priced at 0.5%. Email Hub, branded apps and some advanced features cost extra. Details are at Circle pricing.

Best fit: A premium community with a course library and live programming. Do not choose it if: Course authoring and compliance records matter more than community experience.

8. Skool: best simple community-led membership

Skool emphasizes discussion, gamification, courses and live calls with a deliberately small feature surface. Hobby is $9 per month with unlimited members, courses, videos and live calls but a 10% transaction fee. Pro is $99 with a 2.9% fee. Both list custom URLs and affiliate functionality; see Skool’s plans.

Best fit: A creator selling one community subscription. Do not choose it if: You need advanced assessments, detailed branding or formal learning administration.

9. LearnDash: best WordPress LMS

LearnDash gives a WordPress owner control over design, hosting, content, plugins, payments and data. That flexibility comes with responsibility for backups, security, updates, plugin compatibility, performance, email delivery and troubleshooting. Current licensing is listed at LearnDash pricing.

Best fit: A business with WordPress expertise and a need for customization. Do not choose it if: You want a managed service with no technical maintenance.

10. TalentLMS: best for internal, partner or customer training

TalentLMS is aimed at employee onboarding, compliance, partner education and customer training rather than consumer discovery. Evaluate user tiers, roles, reporting, SSO, bulk enrollment, data retention and organizational administration at TalentLMS pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: A small or mid-sized organization training known audiences. Do not choose it if: Your main challenge is attracting consumers from a marketplace.

11. Moodle: best open-source LMS

Moodle offers maximum extensibility and self-hosting options. Organizations can shape roles, workflows, integrations and data practices, but must fund implementation, hosting, upgrades, design and support. The product overview is at Moodle LMS.

Best fit: Institutions or organizations with technical and administrative capacity. Do not choose it if: You need a turnkey creator checkout tomorrow.

12. TrainerCentral: best budget live-training system

TrainerCentral lists unlimited courses and learners on its Professional plan, live virtual classrooms, assignments, graded tests, certificates, drip scheduling, compliance settings and up to 100 live participants, with a zero-transaction-fee structure. Verify current plan limits at TrainerCentral pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: Trainers combining live classes with assignments and certificates. Do not choose it if: Marketplace distribution or a large creator ecosystem is your priority.

13. Teachfloor: best cohort-based course platform

Teachfloor is built around cohorts, live sessions, peer interaction, assignments, prerequisites, bulk invitations, community, gamification, payments, analytics and automations. Its pricing page distinguishes Startup and Full Features plans and lists SCORM import and storage quotas; check those limits at Teachfloor pricing.

Best fit: Structured group learning with instructor involvement. Do not choose it if: Your evergreen course needs little interaction or scheduling.

14. Udemy: best for marketplace discovery

Udemy supplies a large learner marketplace and publishing workflow instead of a conventional branded academy. That can validate demand with less upfront audience-building, but you give up control over pricing, promotions, branding, checkout economics and customer ownership. Review the instructor process at Udemy Teaching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: Distribution and validation. Do not choose it if: Building a portable, owned customer list is non-negotiable.

15. Skillshare: best for creative classes and discovery

Skillshare uses an application, publishing and royalty model for qualifying teachers. It emphasizes creative subjects and pays qualifying teachers monthly; promotional statements about top earners are not typical income projections. See Skillshare for teachers.

Best fit: Design, illustration, photography, productivity and related creative instruction. Do not choose it if: You need your own checkout, price and subscriber relationship.

16. Gumroad: best lightweight digital-product storefront

Gumroad supports courses, tutorials, downloads, memberships and other digital products without a conventional LMS subscription. Direct or profile sales cost 10% + $0.50 per transaction; Gumroad Discover sales cost 30%. Gumroad says it acts as merchant of record for worldwide sales-tax collection and remittance, but sellers should still review terms and their own obligations. See Gumroad pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: A small product sold to an existing audience. Do not choose it if: You need prerequisites, formal assessments, detailed progress records or a full academy.

How to compare real cost

Use this formula rather than comparing headline subscriptions:

Real monthly cost = subscription + platform transaction fees + payment processing + email/contact charges + storage or student overages + add-ons + migration and maintenance.

A percentage fee can be sensible at low volume and expensive at scale. For example, a $42 plan with a 5% fee costs $92 before payment processing at $1,000 in monthly sales; a higher no-fee tier may be cheaper once sales pass its break-even point. Run the calculation using your own expected revenue, average order value and refund rate.

  • Check products, active students, contacts, administrators and live-attendee caps.
  • Separate platform fees from card-processing fees.
  • Ask whether a branded mobile app, email hub, API or automation is an add-on.
  • Confirm annual-billing commitments, taxes, trials and refund terms.
  • Price the work of migrating content, progress records, payments and email automations.

Learning features that actually matter

“Course creation” can mean outline generation, AI drafting, video hosting, editing, captions, translations, interactive video, quizzes, landing pages, payments, tax handling, community and analytics. AI can accelerate drafts, quizzes and repurposing; it does not establish accuracy, sound sequencing, accessibility or valid assessment.

For formal learning, verify graded tests, assignments, instructor feedback, certificates, drip schedules, prerequisites, mandatory order, completion records, SCORM or xAPI support, SSO, role-based access and audit reporting at the specific plan level. A creator platform with quizzes is not automatically suitable for regulated training.

Ownership, portability and the student experience

Before subscribing, ask whether you can export students, orders, contacts, content and learning records in usable formats. Confirm custom-domain support, external CRM connections, pricing and refund control, and what happens if the vendor changes plans.

Run a pilot as a student. Test mobile playback, captions, downloads, navigation, password recovery, checkout, refunds, drip timing, notifications, community access, certificate delivery and data export. This catches failures that a feature list cannot.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Define whether the product is self-paced, cohort-based, live, community-led or compliance-oriented.
  2. Estimate monthly revenue, learners, contacts, products, administrators and live attendance.
  3. Decide whether you need marketplace discovery or ownership of the audience.
  4. List required assessments, certificates, SCORM/xAPI, SSO, roles and reports.
  5. Shortlist two or three tools from the matching category.
  6. Calculate total cost at your expected sales volume, including fees and add-ons.
  7. Confirm exports, integrations, tax treatment, cancellation and refund policies.
  8. Build a small pilot and test the complete student and payment journey.

Teachable is a straightforward hosted starting point; Podia is another low-complexity option when you also want downloads, coaching and memberships.

Choose Kajabi when funnels and email are central, or Circle, Mighty Networks or Skool when community interaction is the membership’s main value.

Use Udemy to test demand and gain marketplace reach. Host your own course when pricing, branding, customer data and long-term portability matter more.

TalentLMS or Moodle are more natural starting points than consumer creator platforms; assess SSO, roles, completion records, bulk enrollment, reporting and support requirements.

The Bottom Line

For most independent creators, shortlist Thinkific and Teachable first; add Kajabi when marketing automation justifies its price, LearnWorlds when learning depth matters, and Circle, Mighty Networks or Skool when community is the product. Choose LearnDash or Moodle for control, Teachfloor or TrainerCentral for live cohorts, TalentLMS for organizational training, and Udemy, Skillshare or Gumroad only when their distribution or lightweight-selling model matches your strategy.
