No SEO tool can guarantee higher rankings. The right tools help you find opportunities, diagnose problems and measure what changes; results depend on what you do with that information. Most site owners should start with free first-party tools, then add one paid platform only when a recurring task—such as competitor research, rank tracking or large-scale crawling—makes the cost worthwhile.

This list covers 15 tools that solve different SEO problems. Search Console is not a substitute for a crawler, and a content optimizer is not a substitute for analytics. Choose by bottleneck, not by feature count.

SEO tools at a glance

Tool Best for Free access Best fit Main limitation
Google Search Console Google queries, clicks, indexing and search appearance Yes Almost every site Google-only; limited competitor data
PageSpeed Insights Performance and Core Web Vitals diagnostics Yes Site owners and developers Findings may require technical interpretation
Screaming Frog SEO Spider Technical site crawling Yes, up to 500 URLs SEOs and site owners who need crawl detail Desktop software; larger crawls require a paid license
Ahrefs Backlinks and competitor research Limited access for verified sites Link builders and research-heavy SEO work Paid usage limits and cost can matter
Semrush Broad SEO, competitor, reporting and marketing workflows Limited free or trial access Businesses and agencies using several modules Broad packages and add-ons may be costly
Bing Webmaster Tools Bing indexing and search performance Yes Sites seeking a second search-engine view Bing data does not replace Google data
Google Trends Seasonality and relative topic interest Yes Content planners Does not give exact search volume
Google Keyword Planner Keyword ideas and advertising-oriented demand estimates Generally available with a Google Ads account Keyword discovery and commercial context Estimates are designed for ad planning, not exact SEO forecasts
Google Rich Results Test Testing supported structured-data eligibility Yes Developers and publishers using schema Passing does not guarantee a rich result
Google Analytics 4 Engagement and conversions after a visit Yes Measuring business outcomes Not a keyword-ranking tool
Sitebulb Visual technical audits and explanations Trial/paid Consultants and teams presenting findings Not a free crawler; less suited to some raw, custom workflows
SE Ranking Value-oriented all-in-one SEO and rank tracking Trial/paid Small businesses, freelancers and growing teams Data depth and scale may trail premium suites
Moz Pro Accessible keyword, link, audit and rank-tracking suite Trial/paid Beginners and smaller teams Authority scores are proprietary estimates, not Google factors
Ubersuggest Simple keyword and competitor research Limited free/paid access Budget-conscious users with basic needs Less depth and usage capacity than larger platforms
Surfer SERP-informed content optimization Paid/trial options vary Teams publishing content frequently Scores can encourage over-optimization

Free access may require an account or verified site, and paid features and quotas depend on plan. Check each vendor’s current terms before choosing a subscription.

Start with free tools that show what is happening

1. Google Search Console

Search Console is the best starting point for understanding how Google sees a verified site. Its reports include queries and pages associated with impressions and clicks, average position, indexing information, sitemaps, manual actions, security issues, Core Web Vitals and supported search enhancements. Use the Search Console documentation to understand what each report covers.

A practical first pass is to verify the domain property, submit the XML sitemap, review Performance by query and page, and inspect important URLs that are not indexed. Look for pages with many impressions but relatively few clicks, then check whether the title and description accurately match the result’s intent. Pages appearing around positions 5–20 may merit review, but a position is an aggregate measure, not a fixed placement every searcher sees. Data can be delayed or aggregated, and an inspection result does not guarantee prompt indexing or ranking.

2. Google Analytics 4

Analytics measures what visitors do after arriving: landing-page engagement, events, conversions, revenue and paths through the site. It answers whether organic visits contribute to business outcomes, not which queries produced a ranking. Pair it with Search Console: the latter is the stronger source for Google search impressions and clicks, while Analytics covers on-site behavior. Google documents the integration in its Search Console and Analytics guidance.

3. PageSpeed Insights

PageSpeed Insights combines lab diagnostics with Chrome real-user field data when enough data is available. It can surface Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift concerns, along with potential causes such as oversized images, render-blocking resources, excessive JavaScript, long main-thread work and layout shifts. Consult the PageSpeed documentation to interpret the report. A low score is not automatically a ranking penalty, and a perfect score does not guarantee rankings; treat the results as performance and user-experience diagnostics.

4. Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools provides Bing-specific search performance, crawling and indexing information, plus sitemap and diagnostic features. Because search engines differ, it is a useful second view—especially if a site receives meaningful traffic from Microsoft’s ecosystem—but it is not a replacement for Google Search Console.

Research demand and validate search features

5. Google Trends

Trends helps compare topics, explore regional interest, identify seasonality and spot rising or declining attention. Its interest values are normalized relative comparisons, not monthly search counts. Use it to judge direction and timing, then combine it with Search Console or a keyword database for other evidence about demand.

6. Google Keyword Planner

Keyword Planner generates related terms and provides advertising-oriented volume ranges, location and language options, and advertiser competition or cost-per-click signals. Those figures can help frame commercial intent, but they are not exact organic search-volume counts or traffic forecasts. It is generally available through a Google Ads account.

7. Google Rich Results Test

The Rich Results Test checks whether a page’s structured data is valid for supported rich-result features and identifies errors or warnings. Google’s structured-data guidance explains the distinction between markup and search appearance. Passing establishes neither guaranteed display nor a traffic gain: syntax validity, eligibility and an actual result shown to users are separate things.

Use a crawler when the problem is site-wide

8. Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Screaming Frog crawls a site to find broken links and server errors, redirect chains, missing or duplicated titles, meta-description issues, canonical and noindex directives, sitemap problems, pagination, hreflang, structured data and internal-link patterns. It can render JavaScript and extract custom data. The free edition is limited to 500 URLs; larger crawls require a paid license, with current licensing terms on the official license page.

Set the crawl scope deliberately, especially for subdomains and parameter-heavy sites. A crawler can miss login-gated or orphaned URLs, behave differently from Google’s renderer, or encounter blocked resources and bot protection. Compare crawl results with sitemap and Search Console data. A page that is crawlable is not necessarily useful, and a technically valid page is not necessarily one the site should index.

9. Sitebulb

Sitebulb is another crawler, with an emphasis on visualizations, explanations and prioritization that can make technical findings easier to communicate to clients or nontechnical colleagues. Its pricing page sets out current plans. It is a reasonable choice when presentation and audit guidance matter; Screaming Frog may suit users who prefer granular crawl configuration and raw exports.

Choose one paid platform for recurring research

Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking and Moz Pro overlap in areas such as keyword research, competitor analysis, audits and rank tracking. Their figures—including traffic, search volume, keyword difficulty and authority—are third-party estimates or proprietary metrics, not Google’s own data. Avoid paying for multiple suites that answer the same recurring questions unless your scale or workflow genuinely needs both.

10. Ahrefs

Ahrefs is a strong fit when backlinks, competitor pages and link opportunities are central to the work. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker and Content Explorer support backlink analysis, keyword and content discovery, and competitive research. Verified site owners can use Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for limited free access; its published allowance includes 5,000 site-audit crawl credits per month per project and up to 1,000 visible backlinks and keywords at once. Paid plans add capacity and features, so compare the current Ahrefs plans against the recurring tasks you need. Its estimated competitor traffic is directional, not the site’s actual analytics.

11. Semrush

Semrush is suited to teams that want keyword and competitor research, audits, position tracking, reporting and content or marketing modules in a broader interface. Selected packages include AI-search visibility capabilities, but availability and limits depend on the package. Its SEO pricing page and Semrush One page show differing package scopes; compare monitored sites, keywords, historical data, prompts, reporting and add-ons rather than choosing by headline feature count. It is poor value if you only need an occasional crawl or a few keyword ideas.

Ahrefs or Semrush?

Choose Ahrefs when… Choose Semrush when…
Backlink discovery, link gaps and competitor-content research recur often. You want SEO research alongside broader marketing, reporting and campaign workflows.
You want to explore limited verified-site tools before purchasing. Position tracking, integrations or selected AI-search monitoring fit your workflow.
Your team values a site-explorer-led workflow. Your team will use several modules enough to justify their package limits.

Neither is a universal winner. Select one, test whether it produces actionable decisions, and reconsider only if a specific gap remains.

12. SE Ranking

SE Ranking combines rank tracking, keyword and competitor research, audits, backlink monitoring, reporting and local SEO functions. It is a value-oriented all-in-one option for freelancers, small businesses and growing teams. Plans, billing terms, keyword frequency and optional Agency Pack, AI Search and API add-ons affect the total cost; review the current SE Ranking pricing. It may be less suited to researchers who require the deepest historical backlink data or enterprise scale.

13. Moz Pro

Moz Pro offers keyword research, link analysis, rank tracking and site audits in an interface that many beginners find approachable. Domain Authority and Page Authority are Moz metrics for comparative research; they are not Google ranking factors. Check the current Moz Pro pricing rather than relying on conflicting third-party price tables, and do not buy it on the assumption that its authority score is a ranking target.

Buy specialist tools only for a specific bottleneck

14. Ubersuggest

Ubersuggest provides keyword suggestions, content ideas, basic competitor research, difficulty estimates, backlink overviews and simple site audits. Its lighter interface and limited free access can suit occasional or budget-conscious research. It is not a like-for-like substitute for larger suites when a team needs extensive historical data, deep backlink discovery, high-volume exports or agency reporting. Check current Ubersuggest plan terms before relying on a quota.

15. Surfer

Surfer helps content teams build briefs and review coverage and structure against pages appearing in a target search-results page. It can be useful in a high-volume publishing workflow, but its content score is a checklist—not a quality grade or ranking target. It cannot determine whether a page is accurate, original, useful, aligned with intent or persuasive. Review the current Surfer plans if frequent publishing makes a specialist optimizer worth considering.

Match your first tool to the problem

If the question is… Start with…
Which Google queries already bring impressions and clicks? Google Search Console
Why is an important URL not indexed? Search Console, then a crawler such as Screaming Frog
Why does a page feel slow or shift while loading? PageSpeed Insights
What do competitors rank for, or who links to them? Ahrefs or Semrush
Which topics are seasonal or gaining interest? Google Trends
How does organic traffic contribute to conversions? Google Analytics 4, paired with Search Console
How can I explain a technical audit clearly? Sitebulb
How do I cover several SEO tasks on a tighter budget? SE Ranking
Is supported structured data eligible for a rich result? Google Rich Results Test
How can an editorial team organize SERP-informed optimization? Surfer, used as a secondary checklist

Build a stack by site size and work

New or small site

  • Use Search Console for Google visibility and indexing.
  • Add Analytics for engagement and conversions, PageSpeed Insights for performance, and Screaming Frog’s free crawl for basic technical checks.
  • Use Trends and Keyword Planner for topic direction and keyword ideas; validate structured data with the Rich Results Test when relevant.

Content-led small business

Keep the free baseline, then add Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest if keyword discovery is a recurring task. Consider one paid suite only when you need competitor gaps, historical estimates, repeatable rank tracking or reporting.

Growing site or technical-heavy team

Choose one of Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking or Moz Pro to fill research and monitoring gaps. Add a paid Screaming Frog license when crawl scale exceeds the free limit, or Sitebulb when visual audit explanations are especially useful. Test important templates in PageSpeed Insights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Agency or high-volume publisher

Prioritize project and user limits, crawl capacity, keyword frequency, location and device coverage, exports, integrations and client reporting. An agency may justify both a broad suite and a dedicated crawler; a content operation may justify Surfer when it publishes often enough to use the workflow. AI-search tracking in selected products is supplementary: results can vary by prompt, location, model, date and measurement method and are not equivalent to conventional rankings.

Use SEO tools without wasting money

  1. Define the bottleneck. Decide whether you need first-party performance, indexing diagnosis, competitor research, crawling, rank monitoring or content workflow support.
  2. Use first-party evidence first. Check Search Console, Analytics and PageSpeed Insights before treating third-party estimates as site facts.
  3. Buy one overlapping suite at a time. Compare Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking and Moz on the work you repeat, not the length of their feature lists.
  4. Check operational limits. Review projects, crawl credits, tracked keywords, update frequency, history, exports, users, API access, location, device and search-engine coverage, and JavaScript rendering.
  5. Turn findings into assigned work. For each issue, identify the affected URL, likely impact, responsible person and a measure to review after implementation.
  6. Re-crawl and measure outcomes. Compare indexing, clicks, conversions, performance and ranking trends after changes. A technical fix may not move rankings if intent, content value, competition, authority or demand is the actual constraint.
  7. Review subscriptions at renewal. Check current prices, billing cycle, taxes, trial terms, quotas and add-ons on the vendor’s official page; cancel tools that are not producing useful recurring decisions.

Interpret tool scores and rankings carefully

  • Estimates are not ground truth. Ahrefs and Semrush traffic estimates, keyword volumes, Keyword Difficulty, Moz authority metrics, Ubersuggest estimates and Surfer content scores are useful for comparison or prioritization, not guaranteed traffic or Google calculations.
  • Volume is not opportunity. A high-volume phrase may be commercially irrelevant, too competitive, seasonal, mismatched with your page, or dominated by ads, shopping, video, local results or major brands.
  • Rankings are variable. Results change with location, device, language, search engine, time and SERP features. Use trends and distributions rather than promising a stable position one.
  • Audit findings need judgment. Crawlers identify potential problems; they do not decide business priority. A technical pass cannot make an unhelpful page worth ranking, and not every unfamiliar backlink is harmful.
  • AI-search metrics are a different measure. Monitoring in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or AI Overviews depends on prompts and test methods and should not be presented as a traditional Google ranking.

The tools help reduce uncertainty and prioritize work; they do not create relevance, authority, usefulness or search demand. For most websites, a first-party free baseline plus one carefully chosen paid platform is more useful than a stack of overlapping subscriptions.
