Cloudflare Pages is the strongest default for a coded static site, WordPress.com suits a no-code blog, and InfinityFree or ByetHost are better fits for PHP/MySQL practice. Free hosting is usually appropriate for learning, portfolios, documentation, hobby projects and temporary sites—not an online store, lead-generation business or mission-critical publication.

The best free hosting sites by use case
1. Cloudflare Pages: best overall for static sites
Cloudflare Pages is the best default for portfolios, documentation, landing pages and sites generated by Astro, Hugo or Jekyll. The $0 plan includes unlimited sites, static requests and bandwidth, 500 builds per month, GitHub/GitLab integration, SSL and up to 100 custom domains per project. Free accounts are limited to 100 projects, 20,000 files per site and 25 MiB per individual file (plan; limits). It is not a conventional PHP/MySQL host; dynamic features need Workers, Pages Functions, an external database or another service.
2. GitHub Pages: best for documentation and open source
GitHub Pages is excellent for project sites, educational exercises, portfolios and public documentation. GitHub documents a 1 GB published-site limit, a soft 100 GB monthly bandwidth limit and a soft 10-builds-per-hour limit (limits). GitHub says Pages is not intended to provide free hosting for online businesses, e-commerce or commercial SaaS, and it should not process passwords or card data.
3. Netlify: best for previews and lightweight features
Netlify combines Git deployment, custom domains, SSL, a global CDN, unlimited deploy previews and functions. The current free plan uses 300 credits per month rather than a simple bandwidth allowance (pricing; credit rules). Projects can be paused when the monthly limit is reached, so a traffic spike can interrupt a site.

4. Vercel: best for a personal Next.js project
Vercel’s Hobby plan is $0 and includes Git imports, automatic deployments, SSL, a global CDN and DDoS mitigation. The pricing page lists 1 million edge requests and 100 GB monthly fast data transfer for Hobby. Vercel explicitly positions Hobby for personal, non-commercial use; a business should use an appropriate paid plan (pricing).
5. WordPress.com Free: best managed blog
The free WordPress.com plan has no expiration, includes hosting and SSL, a WordPress.com subdomain, 1 GB of media storage, and unlimited pages and posts. It does not include a custom domain, plugin installation or an ad-free visitor experience (plan; features). This is hosted WordPress, not a server you administer.
6. Google Sites: best for simple information pages
Google Sites works well for clubs, classrooms, events, family pages and internal information. It is a visual builder, not PHP hosting. Design and code control are limited, and administration depends on the Google account or Workspace context. Confirm current custom-domain and publishing rules in Google’s documentation before committing to it.

7. Wix Free: best visual builder
Wix offers quick template-based publishing for beginners. Free sites generally use a Wix subdomain and display Wix branding; custom domains and branding removal require a paid plan (builder). Storage, bandwidth and advertising details can vary by market, so check the current plan shown for your country.
8. InfinityFree: best feature-rich PHP experiment
InfinityFree advertises 5 GB disk space, unlimited bandwidth subject to policy, PHP 8.3, MySQL 8.0/MariaDB 11.4, free SSL, Softaculous, free subdomains and support for an existing domain, with no stated expiration (provider details). “Unlimited” does not remove CPU, memory, database, abuse or fair-use constraints. Use it for learning rather than a revenue-critical site.
9. ByetHost: best control-panel practice
ByetHost advertises 5 GB NVMe storage, unlimited monthly bandwidth, PHP 8.3, MySQL 8/MariaDB 11.4, cron jobs, VistaPanel, Softaculous and free SSL on subdomains (free plan). Its advertised 10 MB maximum upload size can prevent large media uploads, backup restores and some plugin installations.

AwardSpace advertises instant activation, one-click CMS installation, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, email support and ad-free hosting, plus a provider-stated 99.9% uptime guarantee (free hosting). Treat the uptime figure as a provider guarantee with terms, not independent measurement. Check its current plan table for exact storage, bandwidth, domain and email limits.
11. x10Hosting: constrained free plan with an upgrade path
x10Hosting offers a free x10 Basic plan with DirectAdmin. The displayed plan table lists two databases, three email addresses, three domains and an initial 500 MB disk quota, while the page also uses broader “unlimited” marketing language (provider page). Report the concrete quota when planning a site; x10 Premium is advertised from $3.95 per month if more resources are needed.
12. Freehostia: only after checking the official plan
Freehostia can be considered for a very small traditional site, but current storage, bandwidth and mailbox figures should be taken only from its official plan page. Do not treat older third-party figures as guarantees. If you need a developer-focused Firebase project instead, verify current quotas, billing requirements and overage behavior in Firebase Hosting documentation and pricing.

How to choose
- HTML, CSS and JavaScript: Start with Cloudflare Pages; choose Netlify if previews and forms matter.
- GitHub documentation or open source: Use GitHub Pages, provided the project is not a commercial transaction site.
- Next.js: Use Vercel for a personal project, and review commercial-use requirements before launch.
- No-code blog: Choose WordPress.com Free.
- Simple school, club or internal page: Choose Google Sites; choose Wix when visual templates matter more.
- PHP, MySQL or cron: Try InfinityFree, ByetHost, AwardSpace or x10Hosting for learning.
- Business website: Skip free hosting if you collect payments, leads or private customer data.
What “free” usually excludes
- A registered domain: A free subdomain is not a free .com. Domain registration is separate.
- Professional email: Hosting a site does not automatically provide a mailbox. Consider Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or Zoho Mail after obtaining a domain.
- Backups and recovery: Export content and keep an independent copy; free plans rarely provide strong recovery guarantees.
- Predictable scaling: Credit meters, fair-use rules and shared CPU can throttle or pause a site.
- Portability: Check whether you can export content, move DNS, download files and access databases before building a platform-dependent site.
Can free hosting run WordPress, PHP and databases?
WordPress.com runs managed WordPress, but its free plan does not provide ordinary plugin installation. InfinityFree, ByetHost, AwardSpace and x10Hosting advertise the PHP/database features needed for self-hosted WordPress experiments. Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, Netlify and Vercel cannot run ordinary PHP WordPress directly. A static WordPress export can be deployed there, but it does not retain the dashboard, database, comments or normal dynamic forms.
How to publish a free site
Cloudflare Pages via Git
- Put the site in GitHub or GitLab.
- In Cloudflare, open Workers & Pages, choose Create application, then Pages.
- Connect the repository, select a framework preset, enter the build command (for example,
npm run build) and set the output directory such asdist,buildorpublic. - Deploy, test the generated
pages.devaddress, then add the custom domain in the project’s domain settings and confirm DNS and HTTPS.
Common failures are an incorrect output directory, missing SPA fallback, a file over 25 MiB, exhausted builds or conflicting DNS records. See Pages documentation.
GitHub Pages
- Create a repository and add the static files.
- Open repository Settings, then Pages.
- Select the publishing branch/folder or a GitHub Actions workflow.
- Confirm the generated URL, then configure a custom domain after checking the repository and DNS settings.
An absent index.html, wrong branch, failed workflow or incorrect DNS target commonly prevents publication. Read the Pages documentation.

WordPress.com
- Create a WordPress.com account and choose a free subdomain.
- Select a free theme, create pages and posts in the block editor, and publish.
- Upgrade only when you need a custom domain, plugins, more storage or ad-free presentation.
Traditional shared hosting
Register with the provider, choose its free subdomain or connect a domain you already own, open the control panel, create a database, install WordPress or upload files by FTP, and configure SSL. Keep a local copy because suspension, throttling and limited support are possible.
When to move to paid hosting
Upgrade before the site becomes financially or operationally important. Payment collection, customer accounts, private data, dependable email, daily backups, guaranteed support, staging, higher performance and contractual uptime all justify paying for hosting. Free hosting is a useful starting point, not a substitute for resilience and recovery.
