The headline phone discount was up to 50% off select Android models for customers signing up for Verizon Unlimited; the clearest standalone bargain was a Google Home Mini advertised at $29.99, with a separate $10 prepaid Mastercard promotion. The offers have expired.
What Verizon’s 2017 Black Friday roundup included
Droid Life published its 10-deal roundup on November 24, 2017, two days after Verizon announced its holiday promotions. The offers began around Thanksgiving; the Home Mini prepaid-card promotion ran November 23–27, and many deals were scheduled through November 27. The list mixed carrier-tied phone discounts, standalone product markdowns, and accessory promotions, so its “best” ranking was editorial—not an official Verizon ranking. Droid Life’s roundup and Verizon’s November 21, 2017 announcement describe the historical offers.
Here are the 10 deals as advertised at the time. Prices and savings below are historical 2017 figures, not current prices or claims of present availability.
| Deal | 2017 advertised terms | Who it suited |
|---|---|---|
| Select Android phones | Up to 50% off; model-specific | Buyers willing to enroll in Verizon Unlimited and choose an eligible phone |
| Google Home Mini | $29.99, $20 off, plus a $10 prepaid Mastercard promotion | Someone who wanted a small Google Assistant speaker and could use the card |
| Google Home | $79.99, $50 off | A buyer seeking a larger Google smart speaker |
| Google Daydream View | $79.99, $20 off | Owners of a compatible phone interested in mobile virtual reality |
| Chromecast Ultra | $54.99, $15 off | Someone who wanted a streaming device and could use its features |
| Fitbit Blaze | $149.99, $50 off | A buyer specifically interested in that older Fitbit model |
| UE BOOM 2 | $99.99, $100 off | Someone shopping for that Bluetooth speaker generation |
| Moto Mods | Buy one, get one free | Owners of a compatible Moto Z phone who wanted two compatible Mods |
| Phone cases | Buy one, get one 50% off | Someone buying two useful cases; the discount applied to the equal- or lower-priced case |
| Bose SoundSport Wireless | $129.99, $20 off | A buyer seeking that wireless-earbud model |
The product prices and list are from Droid Life’s November 24 roundup; Verizon’s announcement also described the phone and smart-home promotions. These devices belong to the 2017 product generation. Their historical discounts do not establish that they are available, supported, or good-value purchases today.

What “up to 50% off” meant for phones
It did not mean every Verizon phone was half price. Verizon’s announcement named selected Android phones, including the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, Galaxy Note8, and Moto Z2 Force, and tied the promotion to signing up for Verizon Unlimited. Verizon said no trade-in was required for that offer. Droid Life reported the Pixel 2 at 50% off and the Pixel 2 XL at 35% off; those model-specific figures should not be generalized to every eligible handset.
The percentage off was only one part of the cost. A buyer evaluating the offer would also need to account for the required plan and any applicable activation fees, taxes, device-payment obligations, and consequences of leaving service before meeting applicable terms. A handset discount can be poor value if the buyer would not otherwise choose the required service. The 2017 announcement does not establish what a particular reader’s total bill would have been.

Was the Home Mini really $19.99?
Not at checkout: the advertised purchase price was $29.99. Verizon separately promoted a $10 prepaid Mastercard for purchases during November 23–27, 2017. Calling the Home Mini “$19.99” describes only a possible effective cost after receiving and valuing that promotional card; it was not an instant $10 reduction. The available offer descriptions do not establish complete card delivery, redemption, expiration, or eligibility terms, so the card should not be treated as cash or as guaranteed for every buyer.
Which of the 10 deals made sense for which shopper?
Best low-cost standalone purchase: Google Home Mini
At $29.99 before the separate card promotion, it was the lowest-cost listed standalone item. It made sense for someone who wanted a Google Assistant speaker; it was less compelling if the buyer already had an equivalent device or would not use the prepaid card.

Best phone offer: a qualifying Android model, for the right plan customer
The phone promotion had the largest headline percentage, but its value depended on the exact model and the Verizon Unlimited requirement. It was most relevant to someone already planning to use that service, rather than someone choosing a more expensive plan solely to obtain a handset discount.
Best for existing Moto Z owners: Moto Mods
The buy-one-get-one offer had little practical value without a compatible Moto Z-family phone. Compatibility matters more than the apparent value of a free accessory.

Best case promotion: two cases the buyer actually needed
The second case had to be equal to or lower in price than the first. Buying an unnecessary second case to claim a discount would not make the purchase a saving.
Potential smart-home pairing: Google Home or Home Mini with Chromecast Ultra
This could suit someone building around Google Assistant and wanting both a speaker and streaming device. It was not automatically a better deal for someone whose TV or existing hardware already met the need.

Deals to skip without a specific use
- Skip the phone promotion if you did not want the required Verizon Unlimited service.
- Skip Moto Mods without compatible Moto Z hardware, and Daydream View without a compatible phone.
- Skip the case offer unless both cases were useful and fit the intended phones.
- Compare older product generations with alternatives before buying through resale or refurbished channels; the 2017 discount alone says nothing about present condition, support, or value.
Other Verizon offers that were not part of the 10-deal list
Verizon’s broader announcement included separate tablet and Fios promotions. These had their own activation, payment, or service conditions; they should not be read as extensions of the selected-Android-phone offer.
- A 32GB iPad was advertised for $199 with a new two-year activation, or $99 when purchased with an iPhone on device payment.
- Verizon also described iPad discounts of $250 or $300 under specified two-year-service conditions, and an Ellipsis 10 HD tablet for $29.99 with a two-year agreement.
- A Fios Gigabit Connection, Custom TV, and Phone package was advertised at $79.99 per month with a two-year agreement, paired with a Google Home, Nest Thermostat E, or $100 Target gift card.
Those terms came from Verizon’s November 2017 announcement. Fios is a separate home-service offer, and the tablet prices and commitments were not the same promotion as the wireless Android-phone markdown.
How to judge the historical prices now
For a present-day purchase, treat the listed phones, wearables, speakers, and accessories as older products rather than current recommendations. Anyone encountering them used or refurbished is making a different decision from buying through Verizon’s 2017 sale: condition, compatibility, support, and the seller’s terms need separate checking. The 2017 promotions ended in November 2017 and do not establish current Verizon plan prices, inventory, trade-in values, or Black Friday offers.
