No used SUV is automatically a safe buy. The ten models below are a practical U.S. shortlist for shoppers who want a proven nameplate, useful safety evidence, and a choice of compact, family-size, or off-road vehicles. Reliability scores describe groups of vehicles, while your candidate’s service history, mileage, title, recalls, and inspection determine whether it is worth buying.
Use this list to narrow your search, then verify the exact model year, equipment, build date, and vehicle history before paying.
How this shortlist was built
The evidence combines used-SUV reliability coverage, a 2025 J.D. Power dependability study, and model-year-specific IIHS safety awards. iSeeCars says its used-vehicle analysis covers more than 12 million vehicles and publishes reliability ratings on a 1–10 scale; those are that publisher’s measures, not a universal warranty or a prediction for one vehicle. See iSeeCars’ 2026 used-SUV analysis and its 2026 reliability rankings.
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study identifies the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 as SUV-segment leaders. Edmunds’ used-SUV coverage draws on problems reported by original owners of three-year-old vehicles (2023 model-year SUVs in the cited result), so its findings do not automatically describe older examples.
#1 Best Overall
IIHS awards apply to specific model years and sometimes specific build dates. Check the individual award record at IIHS’ 2026 awards page or the 2025 midsize-SUV list; never transfer a current award to every used year. NHTSA’s page titled “2026 Model Year Vehicles Selected for Testing by NHTSA” describes vehicles selected for testing, not completed five-star results.
The 10 used SUV models to put on your list
| Model | Best fit | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Honda CR-V | Efficient compact daily driving | Included in iSeeCars’ used-SUV coverage. Confirm the exact year’s crash results, powertrain history, recalls, and maintenance. |
| Toyota RAV4 | All-around compact crossover | Appears in iSeeCars coverage and led its SUV segment in J.D. Power’s 2025 dependability study. The study does not certify an individual vehicle. |
| Mazda CX-5 | Compact SUV with a more engaging drive | Included in iSeeCars and J.D. Power dependability material. IIHS results are model-year-specific; verify the year and build date. |
| Subaru Forester | Visibility, practicality, and available all-wheel drive | Listed in Edmunds’ reliable-used-SUV examples and covered by current IIHS award context. Older years require their own safety and service checks. |
| Toyota 4Runner | Body-on-frame towing or off-road use | Named by Edmunds among reliable used SUVs. It is a fundamentally different choice from a compact crossover: assess fuel use, ride, age, and off-road wear. |
| Toyota Highlander | Three-row family transportation | Identified in iSeeCars’ used-SUV coverage. Compare the exact year, seating configuration, mileage, and asking price; do not assume every generation is equivalent. |
| Honda HR-V | Small footprint and practical urban use | Appears in current iSeeCars reliability ranking and current IIHS award context. Current recognition does not establish ratings for every used year. |
| Honda Pilot | Larger family crossover | Appears in IIHS’ 2025 midsize-SUV award results. That safety recognition is model-year-specific and is not a long-term reliability study. |
| Kia Telluride | Three-row comfort and road-trip space | Appears in IIHS’ 2025 midsize-SUV awards. Check the particular year’s recalls, warranty eligibility, service records, and award applicability. |
| Nissan Pathfinder | Three-row utility with a midsize footprint | Included in IIHS’ 2025 midsize-SUV award results. Treat the award as a year-specific safety data point, not proof of used-vehicle dependability. |
Match the model to the job
Compact commuting and everyday errands
The CR-V, RAV4, CX-5, Forester, and HR-V are the natural starting group when maneuverability, ordinary cargo space, and operating efficiency matter more than maximum towing or a third row. Compare seating and cargo measurements for the exact generation because body dimensions and equipment change.
Family space
The Highlander, Pilot, Telluride, and Pathfinder provide three-row alternatives. Inspect the third-row access, child-seat fit, cargo room behind the last row, and condition of sliding or folding mechanisms rather than assuming a “three-row” label means the same usable space.
Rough roads and off-road use
The 4Runner belongs in a separate category. Its body-on-frame design and off-road-oriented reputation can suit trails, towing, or severe weather, but an example used for those jobs may have underbody, suspension, or hitch wear. A crossover’s smoother ride and lower running demands may be the better financial choice for mostly paved driving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to choose a safe used example
- Set a firm purchase envelope. Include taxes, registration, insurance, tires, routine service, and an emergency repair reserve. The available evidence does not establish a current national price or repair-cost ranking, so compare live listings in your ZIP code.
- Limit the search by generation and year. Write down the exact model year, engine, transmission, drivetrain, and trim before comparing listings. Reliability and safety findings cannot be safely transferred across generations.
- Check the VIN. Obtain a title and accident history, odometer record, ownership pattern, maintenance invoices, and open-recall status. A clean report is useful evidence, not a substitute for inspection.
- Verify safety for that VIN’s build date. Search the IIHS award page for the exact year and configuration. Read NHTSA’s vehicle-specific recall and complaint information; a testing-selection page is not a completed safety rating.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified technician examine structural repairs, leaks, cooling and braking systems, suspension, tires, steering, electronics, and signs of flood or corrosion damage. For a 4Runner or any vehicle advertised for towing or trails, add an underbody and hitch inspection.
- Drive it from cold. Confirm cold-start behavior, warning lights, transmission engagement, braking, straight-line tracking, climate control, driver-assistance functions, and all seat and cargo hardware. Ask why the vehicle is already warm if the seller will not allow a cold start.
- Price condition, not reputation. Reject a neglected “reliable” model and favor a documented, mechanically sound example of a less celebrated model. Keep enough cash for immediate tires, brakes, fluids, or deferred maintenance.
How to read the reliability and safety evidence
Reliability rankings
A publisher’s score or a dependability study summarizes outcomes for a population. It can help identify models worth researching, but it does not reveal whether a particular SUV was maintained, crashed, modified, or exposed to severe use. Compare the study’s vehicle age, owner population, sample, and measurement unit before treating two rankings as directly comparable.
Safety awards
IIHS awards are tied to model years, tests, equipment, and sometimes build-date restrictions. A newer award may reflect redesigned crash structure or standard driver assistance that an older used example lacks. Verify the exact record instead of relying on a badge in an advertisement.
Rank #4
Recalls and condition
Neither a reliability ranking nor an award clears an individual VIN. Confirm that recalls were completed, review service documentation, and have an independent inspection before purchase. If the seller will not provide the VIN or permit an inspection, move to another vehicle.
A practical decision rule
- Choose the CR-V, RAV4, CX-5, Forester, or HR-V when your priority is a compact daily driver and you can document condition.
- Choose the Highlander, Pilot, Telluride, or Pathfinder when you genuinely need three rows and have checked the exact year’s safety record and maintenance.
- Choose the 4Runner only when its rugged capabilities justify its likely trade-offs for your driving, and inspect it specifically for off-road or towing wear.
The best purchase is the inspected, well-documented example that fits your use and budget—not necessarily the model with the highest published score.
