There is no reliable, apples-to-apples list of the world’s most expensive tanks. For today’s main battle tanks, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) gives a broad 2025 unit-cost estimate of $20–30 million, including some training, spare parts, ammunition and initial in-service support—not just the vehicle. Older estimates for individual tanks are often much lower, but they use different and incompletely specified price bases. The comparisons below show what is actually established, rather than pretending those numbers form a definitive ranking.
How to read these tank prices
A tank’s quoted cost can mean the vehicle alone, an upgrade, an average across a production batch, or a package that includes equipment and support. Figures also vary with the tank’s variant, order size, production year, currency and inflation basis. Those details are not all stated for the estimates below, so the figures are useful comparisons—not a precise league table.
- Current broad estimate: IISS’s 2025 estimate for current main battle tanks includes some training, spare parts, ammunition and initial in-service support. It is not a bare factory price and is not a separate quote for every model in its class.
- Historical estimates: The Canadian Forces College’s 2025 study describes its figures as rough historical estimates. The price year and inflation basis are not stated in the figures provided, so they should not be read as current procurement prices.
- Contract totals: A contract’s total value divided by the number of tanks is only an implied average. It is not a confirmed vehicle-only price when the contract may cover other items.
The table preserves those distinctions. The entries are grouped by the kind of evidence available, not ranked from cheapest to most expensive.
Ten expensive tanks, with the cost evidence behind them
| Tank or variant | Reported cost | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Leopard 2A8 | $20–30 million | IISS 2025 broad estimate for current main battle tanks; package includes some training, spare parts, ammunition and initial in-service support, not a model-specific quote. |
| M1A2 Abrams | $20–30 million | Same IISS 2025 broad current-main-battle-tank estimate; not a separate M1A2 price. |
| Leopard 2A7 | $8.8–10 million | Rough historical estimate in the Canadian Forces College’s 2025 study; price year and inflation basis are not stated. |
| Type 10 | $113 million for a 10-tank contract; $11.3 million implied average per tank | Army Guide contract database, accessed 2026. The average is simple division of the reported batch total; contract contents beyond the vehicles are not established. |
| AMX-56 Leclerc 2 | $8.5 million | Rough historical estimate in the Canadian Forces College’s 2025 study; price year and inflation basis are not stated. |
| K2 Black Panther | Approximately US$8.5 million; separately, a 100-tank contract was reported at $820.29 million | Guinness World Records attributes the single-tank figure to South Korea’s Agency for Defence Development; Army Guide’s batch total does not establish a vehicle-only price. |
| Challenger 2 | $6.8 million | Rough historical estimate in the Canadian Forces College’s 2025 study; price year and inflation basis are not stated. |
| Leopard 2A6 | $6.7 million | Rough historical estimate in the Canadian Forces College’s 2025 study; price year and inflation basis are not stated. |
| T-14 Armata | $3.5–6.5 million | Rough historical estimate in the Canadian Forces College’s 2025 study; price year and inflation basis are not stated. |
| Merkava Mk4 | $5.0 million | Rough historical estimate in the Canadian Forces College’s 2025 study; this is not a separately stated Mk4M price. |
Leopard 2A8
The Netherlands Ministry of Defence announced a total contract budget of €1–2.5 billion on 14 May 2025, but did not give a simple tank-only unit price. That budget therefore cannot be divided into a confirmed per-tank figure from the announcement. The IISS range in the table is a broad estimate for current main battle tanks, not a disclosed Dutch purchase price for the 2A8.

M1A2 Abrams
The current broad IISS estimate is the closest figure here, but it should not be mistaken for a model-specific offer or a price for every Abrams configuration. The Canadian Forces College study also gives $6.0 million for an Abrams entry; it does not establish that this older estimate is for the M1A2 variant or make it directly comparable with the current package-inclusive range.
Leopard 2A7
The study’s range distinguishes the 2A7 from the earlier 2A6 estimate. Both are historical comparisons, not current replacement costs. A purchaser’s actual figure would depend on configuration and contract scope, details that the estimate does not supply.
Rank #2
- 1/48 scale plastic model assembly kit. Length: 205mm, width: 77mm.
- Anti-slip surface details molded into the main sections of the model.
- Assembly type tracks feature straight sections for a highly realistic finish.
- Kit includes a weight for creating a heavy feel model.
- 2 marking options are included to recreate U.S. Army 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment M1A2s from 2003 in the Iraq War.
Type 10
The reported contract for ten tanks illustrates why dividing a batch value is not the same as discovering a vehicle’s sticker price. Army Guide’s database does not establish what items or services were included in the total, so the implied average should be treated only as arithmetic on the reported contract figure.
AMX-56 Leclerc 2
The Canadian Forces College study lists this variant separately from the newer Leopard and modern broad-class estimate. Its number is a rough historical comparator; the study figure does not supply a price year or inflation adjustment.

K2 Black Panther
Guinness World Records identifies the K2 as the most expensive tank to date at approximately US$8.5 million, attributing the figure to South Korea’s Agency for Defence Development. That is a historical record-page figure, not a timeless ranking against newer estimates that include support. Army Guide also lists a 100-tank contract worth $820.29 million; dividing the total by the batch size would not establish what one vehicle alone cost.
Challenger 2
This is a rough historical estimate for the Challenger 2, not the cost of the Challenger 3 upgrade programme. The available figure does not specify a current production price or a basis for converting it into today’s money.
Rank #4
- Slide molded turret and upper hull parts give an unbeatable combination of hassle-free assembly and highly realistic detail levels. Cast metal turret and welded hull surface textures are rendered accurately.
- The rear showcases sharp, detailed molding on engine grilles and exhausts, as well as the numerous accessories depicted by the kit.
- Clear parts are used to recreate light lens and cupola vision block parts, further upping the realism of this kit.
- The single-pin T66 tracks are recreated with minimum fuss and great accuracy, by the included belt-type tracks. Drive sprockets feature fine holes.
- A commander figure in realistic pose is provided for the cupola. The periscope seen on the hatch underside is depicted using separate parts.
Leopard 2A6
The 2A6 estimate is distinct from the higher 2A7 range in the same study. Their apparent difference should not be treated as a controlled measure of the cost of upgrading from one variant to the other: the figures do not establish matched contract terms or a common price year.
T-14 Armata
The study supplies a range rather than a single price. It does not state the price year, inflation basis or contract contents, making a more exact present-day comparison unsupported.

Merkava Mk4
The study’s figure applies to the Mk4 entry, not a separately priced Mk4M. Israel’s Ministry of Defense has announced an armored-vehicle production acceleration project exceeding NIS 5 billion, covering Merkava tanks as well as Namer and Eitan vehicles. Because that project combines multiple vehicle types, it does not establish a Merkava-only unit price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So which tank costs the most?
If “cost” means the broad current estimate for a supported main battle tank, IISS’s 2025 $20–30 million range is the highest figure in this comparison—but it is not a model-by-model ranking. If the question is which tank has a published historical single-vehicle record, Guinness World Records gives that distinction to the K2 at approximately US$8.5 million. The two figures answer different questions and should not be compared as if they were quoted on the same basis.
A higher quoted price does not by itself show that a tank is more effective in combat. Price reflects the version purchased and what the contract includes; battlefield performance depends on many factors beyond acquisition cost.
