There is no single, apples-to-apples winner across these ten cars. The 2025 BMW i4 has the highest Consumer Reports predicted-reliability score among the explicitly luxury models in the cited top-ten list, at 83 out of 100. The 2025 Lexus NX scores 77, the Lexus NX Hybrid scores 76, and the Lexus GX received a 2025 J.D. Power model-level dependability award. For used-car recall history, the Lexus NX 300h has the lowest cited count: one recall over the prior ten years.
Those results measure different things. Consumer Reports predicts owner-reported problems in newer vehicles, J.D. Power measures problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles, and recall counts show how often a model was subject to safety campaigns. Use the metric that matches the car and ownership decision you are making.

J.D. Power placed Lexus at 140 PP100 in 2025, the best overall brand result for the third consecutive year. Cadillac recorded 169 PP100 and Porsche 186 PP100 among premium brands. J.D. Power director Jason Norton attributed the industry-wide increase in problems partly to the disruptions affecting vehicles built during that period.

What the powertrain numbers imply
J.D. Power’s 2025 study reported 199 problems per 100 vehicles for conventional hybrids, 200 for gasoline vehicles, 223 for battery-electric vehicles, and 242 for plug-in hybrids. The conventional-hybrid figure is therefore close to the gasoline figure and materially below the battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid figures in that study.

That comparison does not prove that every Lexus hybrid will outperform every gas or electric luxury car. It does explain why a conventional hybrid, such as the NX Hybrid or NX 300h, should be evaluated separately from a plug-in hybrid. It also puts the BMW i4’s Consumer Reports score in context: the i4’s 83 is a strong model-level forecast, while the J.D. Power powertrain averages describe a different population and a different three-year measurement.
Which car is the best choice for a particular buyer?
For the highest new-car Consumer Reports score
Start with the 2025 BMW i4. Its 83/100 Consumer Reports prediction leads the explicitly luxury models in the cited list. Confirm that its charging access, battery warranty and operating costs fit your use; the reliability score alone does not answer those ownership questions.

For a luxury compact SUV
The 2025 Lexus NX has a 77/100 Consumer Reports prediction, while the NX Hybrid has 76/100. The one-point difference is not a reason to ignore the hybrid’s fuel-use advantages or to assume the two powertrains have identical maintenance needs. Match the score to the exact version you are considering.
For a Lexus with a J.D. Power model recognition
The Lexus GX received a 2025 J.D. Power model-level dependability award. Because the cited material does not state its model PP100, treat the award as a separate piece of evidence rather than converting it into a Consumer Reports-style score.

For a used luxury hybrid with the lowest cited recall count
The Lexus NX 300h is the strongest recall-history candidate in this group: one recall over the prior ten years and 0.1 expected recalls per year in the cited analysis. A vehicle with a clean recall count can still have poor maintenance, accident damage or an unresolved campaign, so inspect the individual car.
For a used sedan
The Lexus IS 300 had two recalls over the prior ten years in the cited analysis, compared with 12 for the Mercedes-Benz CLA. That is a recall-history comparison only; it is not a direct test of ride quality, repair cost or owner satisfaction.

How new-car and used-car relevance differ
- Consumer Reports: the 2025 scores are predicted-reliability forecasts based on owner-reported problems. They are most useful when comparing current models, but the result can vary by model year, trim and powertrain.
- J.D. Power: the 2025 study reflects original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years. It is a durability snapshot of an earlier production cohort, not a guarantee for a newly redesigned vehicle.
- Recall counts: the ten-year figures are historical and can change as later campaigns are announced. They are especially useful for a used-car check, provided you verify the exact VIN.
Used-luxury-car reliability checklist
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s official recall lookup. Do this before negotiating, and confirm that every open safety campaign has been repaired.
- Match the evidence to the car. Check the exact model year, engine or hybrid system, drivetrain and trim; a rating for one version may not apply to another.
- Read the service history. Look for scheduled maintenance, fluid services, hybrid-system inspections where applicable, and documentation from qualified shops.
- Inspect wear items and premium components. Budget for tires, brakes, suspension parts, electronic modules and other luxury-vehicle parts even when the reliability signal is strong.
- Compare warranty and service coverage. A remaining factory warranty, certified-used coverage or prepaid maintenance can materially change the financial risk.
- Have an independent inspection. Check for accident repairs, leaks, warning lights, uneven tire wear, battery-health concerns on an EV, and evidence that recall work was completed.
- Price the ownership, not just the purchase. Obtain insurance, tire, brake, charging or fuel and routine-service estimates for the specific car before committing.
Bottom line
The BMW i4 leads this evidence set on Consumer Reports’ 2025 predicted-reliability scale, the Lexus NX and NX Hybrid provide strong Consumer Reports forecasts in the compact-SUV category, and the Lexus GX carries a J.D. Power dependability award. For a used purchase where recall history matters, the Lexus NX 300h has the lowest cited count. None of these signals replaces a VIN check, a model-year match and a documented inspection.
