Ten EV companies on SlashGear’s August 21, 2024 list reported bankruptcy filings or proceedings, but the cases did not all end the same way. Some businesses’ assets were sold, some companies restructured, and one brand was later revived under new investors. A bankruptcy filing is not, by itself, proof that every related business or brand disappeared.

Which EV startups filed for bankruptcy, and what happened next?

The dates and overseas case descriptions below are attributed to SlashGear’s August 21, 2024 article unless a court or regulatory record is identified. “Administration” in the UK and bankruptcy proceedings in Luxembourg are distinct legal labels; the table preserves the wording reported for each company rather than treating the cases as identical.

Company Business and reported proceeding What followed
Fisker U.S. electric-vehicle maker; filed Chapter 11 in June 2024. Bloomberg Law reported that it produced 10,193 Ocean SUVs in 2023 and delivered 4,929 to customers that year. The bankruptcy-agent docket says the debtors’ liquidation plan became effective October 17, 2024. This is a liquidation outcome, not evidence that every asset or associated interest ceased to exist.
Arrival EV startup pursuing an electric bus, cargo van and taxi. SlashGear reported a Luxembourg bankruptcy filing in May 2024 and earlier administration proceedings for two UK subsidiaries. It said the bus and taxi projects had been canceled, with the van still in development. The reported filing and subsidiary administrations are separate proceedings. The cited article does not establish a later outcome for the company or the van project.
HiPhi / Human Horizons Chinese luxury-EV brand and its parent, Human Horizons. SlashGear reported that the parent announced bankruptcy in early August 2024 amid slower domestic sales and rising costs. Planned models included the X, Y and Z. Human Horizons had expressed a goal of emerging with new investment or a joint venture. A final liquidation outcome is not established here.
Lordstown Motors U.S. electric-pickup venture; filed Chapter 11 on June 27, 2023. SlashGear reported that only six vehicles had been sold by February 2023, with around 40 more at the factory under construction. The company emerged from Chapter 11 on March 14, 2024 as Nu Ride Inc. following plan confirmation. SEC material describes the successor’s post-emergence work as claims administration and litigation; SlashGear says the Endurance truck assets were sold.
Electric Last Mile Solutions (ELMS) U.S. startup developing small electric delivery vans; SlashGear reported a June 2022 filing after an executive investigation and loss of funding. SlashGear reported that Mullen Automotive bought the assets for $105 million in October 2022. That sale figure is attributed to the article, not to a court record cited here.
WM Motor Chinese EV maker with a five-model lineup; SlashGear reported a bankruptcy filing in China in October 2023. It also reported that the company sold just under 30,000 vehicles in 2022, or 12% of its stated annual production capacity. The sales and capacity figures are reported by SlashGear and are not independently verified here. A later disposition is not established by the cited material.
Proterra U.S. electric-bus maker and supplier of batteries and charging equipment; its Chapter 11 plan was confirmed by the bankruptcy court on March 6, 2024, according to an SEC filing. SlashGear reports that Phoenix Motorcars acquired the bus business, Volvo Group acquired the battery-manufacturing division, and a reduced charging-equipment operation continued. The plan confirmation and the outcomes of the individual business lines are distinct facts.
Byton Chinese EV startup that unveiled a production-ready concept but never began production. SlashGear reported staff suspensions in 2020 and bankruptcy by 2023 after unsuccessful rescue discussions. The cited account does not establish a court venue or exact petition date, so neither is specified here.
Uniti Swedish city-car startup; SlashGear reported a bankruptcy filing in April 2022. Its historical announced One specifications included up to 186 miles of range and a 67-horsepower motor; the article gave a UK starting price of £15,100 (about $19,300 at the time) and said more than 3,000 deposits had been taken. The One did not reach production, according to SlashGear. The range and price are historical announced figures, not current specifications or a measure of independently verified demand.
Zhidou Chinese maker of short-range EVs; SlashGear said it entered bankruptcy by 2019, after subsidy changes disadvantaged short-range vehicles. Investors later revived the brand, and orders for the Rainbow microcar opened in March 2024, with Geely among the new backers, according to SlashGear. The report does not establish current production or sales.

Why a bankruptcy filing does not tell the whole story

These cases illustrate why “filed for bankruptcy” is not a synonym for “the brand is gone.” A court process can lead to liquidation, a confirmed restructuring plan, or sales of selected assets; a brand can also return under new investors. Those outcomes do not mean the original company, its products or its business lines all survived intact.

The evidence is also uneven. The U.S. developments for Fisker, Lordstown and Proterra above are supported by bankruptcy-agent or SEC records, while many details for companies outside the United States come from SlashGear’s 2024 retrospective. That article is a dated account, not proof of each overseas company’s status today. For a personal-finance decision involving a particular vehicle, deposit, warranty, investment or creditor claim, these company-level summaries do not establish the value or legal treatment of an individual person’s position.
