You can earn money writing tech product reviews through freelance fees, client contracts, affiliate commissions, subscriptions, sponsorships and related research services. Those models do not pay in the same way: some pay for an accepted assignment, while others depend on audience growth, sales or recurring clients. A free product is not cash, and a credible review must be based on real use or clearly identified research—not invented experience.
Choose a route that fits your income needs
If you need income sooner, start with work that has a client or publication paying for a defined deliverable. Affiliate sites, newsletters and memberships can build longer-term income, but they generally depend on finding and keeping an audience. Product-feedback assignments may pay, but they are not necessarily writing jobs or reliably available.
| Route | How income is earned | Audience needed | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelance publication work | Fee for accepted assignment | No personal audience required | Competitive pitching; editor controls publication |
| Commissioned content or ghostwriting | Client fee or retainer | No personal audience required | May be marketing rather than independent editorial work |
| Affiliate site or newsletter | Commission on qualifying purchases | Readers with purchase intent | Traffic and conversions are uncertain |
| Paid publication or membership | Subscription revenue, less applicable fees | Repeat readers willing to pay | Requires ongoing benefits and publishing |
| Sponsored campaigns | Campaign or placement fee | Usually an audience or specialist reach | Disclosure and editorial-independence risks |
| Feedback, evaluation or consulting | Research assignment or project fee | Relevant expertise may matter more than audience | Opportunities and scope vary |
No universal rate applies across these models. Revenue depends on the assignment, testing burden, expertise, audience, conversion, platform fees and other factors. Estimate each route using its actual economics: assignments multiplied by the fee; affiliate conversions multiplied by the commission; subscribers multiplied by the price minus fees; or projects multiplied by the project fee.
1. Pitch freelance reviews to technology publications
Established publications, magazines, specialist sites and newsletters commission hands-on reviews, comparisons and buying guides. The publication pays you; you do not need to build your own audience first. A strong pitch sells a reader-focused question, not simply your availability to review a product.

- Choose a beat such as laptops, privacy tools, accessibility, smart-home products or business software.
- Pitch a specific angle: for example, whether a note-taking app saves time over repeated real meetings.
- Show relevant clips or three to five clearly documented sample reviews, including products you already own or software you can legitimately test.
Editors may set the angle, deadline and publication date, and a review unit may be a loan that must be returned. State what you tested and disclose relevant samples or relationships under the publication’s policy. Separate specifications from what you observed in use.
2. Write commissioned reviews and buying guides for companies
Technology vendors, retailers, agencies and comparison businesses hire writers for product explainers, “best tools for” pages, comparisons, setup guides and buying advice. Package research, fact-checking, original screenshots, testing and later updates as a defined service rather than offering only generic article writing.
First establish what the assignment is: a client’s marketing content is not automatically independent journalism. Label it appropriately wherever it appears, and do not write an impartial verdict if the client expects promotional copy or controls the conclusion. Recurring updates or retainers can make client work more predictable, but revisions and client influence can also expand the workload.
3. Build an affiliate review website
Publish useful reviews and buying guides, then earn a commission if a reader follows a tracked link and completes a qualifying purchase. For Amazon Associates, the required statement is “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases”; Amazon also requires clear, conspicuous link-level disclosures. See Amazon’s disclosure requirements. The FTC likewise says material connections such as affiliate commissions should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously: FTC endorsement guidance.

- K9 Wireless Microphone
Build pages around a real buying decision: who should buy, who should avoid the product, what alternatives fit, and what ownership may cost beyond the purchase price. Do not rank by commission. Keep a review ledger with the test date, software or firmware version, test duration, devices used, problems found, alternatives considered and date of price check. Search traffic and sales are uncertain, so treat this as a long-term asset rather than immediate cash.
4. Publish a review newsletter
A technology newsletter can combine affiliate links, sponsorships and paid subscriptions. It works best when it has a repeatable promise—such as one deeply tested product weekly, software advice for small businesses, or a monthly accessibility-focused buying guide. Email gives you a direct relationship with readers instead of relying entirely on search or social platforms, but subscriber growth still takes work.
Substack lets writers publish free and enable paid subscriptions. Its published pricing says the platform takes 10% of paid transactions, with Stripe processing fees also applying; see Substack’s fee explanation and paid-publication setup steps. Paid subscriptions require connecting Stripe, and availability depends on supported geographies; consult Substack’s supported-country information. Disclose affiliate relationships in the newsletter itself.
5. Earn through Medium’s Partner Program
Medium offers an option for original review essays and technology analysis. Its Partner Program describes earnings as based on member engagement and activity, not a fixed fee for each review. Writers need to meet eligibility requirements and complete enrollment, including connecting Stripe and providing taxpayer information; see the program overview and enrollment guidance.

Long-term ownership pieces, product criticism and explainers may suit the format better than thin affiliate pages. Medium’s terms effective June 1, 2026 say accepted writers may put stories behind its paywall and earn based on performance among members; the terms also allow the program to be modified, suspended or discontinued. Read the current terms. Medium allows affiliate links subject to its rules and FTC guidance, while its acceptable-use guidance bars exclusively AI-generated content from earning through the program. Review its rules and Partner Program acceptable-use policy.
6. Offer paid memberships through Patreon
Memberships can fund premium testing notes, early access, a searchable product database, Q&A sessions or carefully scoped buying advice. Members are paying for useful judgment, curation and time saved—not just extra words. Make the benefits specific and sustainable; avoid promising unlimited personal consultations.
Patreon supports monthly, per-creation and annual subscriptions, as well as one-time purchases. Its terms and fee framework describe platform, processing, payout, currency-conversion and feature-specific fees; the applicable charges depend on the creator’s service level and offering. This model suits writers who already have repeat readers and can deliver consistently.
7. Take sponsored review and brand-campaign work carefully
A company may pay for a sponsored article, campaign or newsletter placement. That can be legitimate paid content, but sponsorship does not make the piece independent. Label the relationship plainly and keep claims within what the evidence supports. The FTC says paid endorsers should disclose material connections, should not claim to have used a product they have not tried and should not make claims they cannot substantiate; see its guidance on advertising endorsements.
Recommended Free Tools
Reject terms that require a guaranteed positive verdict, removal of truthful negative findings, fabricated personal experience or concealed payment. A clear structure might identify a piece as sponsored and explain who funded it and what the sponsor could influence. Keep disclosure near the recommendation, easy to notice and in the same medium as the endorsement.
8. Ghostwrite reviews and comparisons
Agencies and brands may need product comparisons, software explainers, review updates, case studies or executive commentary written under someone else’s byline. Ghostwriting is a paid writing service, not necessarily independent reviewing. It is ethically workable when the client has rights to the content, claims are checked, and the work does not invent product use, tests, testimonials or customer outcomes.

Offer interview-based reviews, competitor research, fact-checking or technical editing as clear deliverables. Ask for permission to describe the work in your portfolio, or to publish an anonymised case study. Be especially careful when a client asks you to compare its product with competitors: clarify whose evidence supports the claims and what the content is intended to represent.
9. Take paid software-feedback and evaluation assignments
Usability tests, beta feedback, research interviews, accessibility testing and technical-documentation reviews can pay for product knowledge without producing a public review article. Eligibility may depend on location, occupation or actual software use, and an assignment may offer access or a gift card rather than cash.

Do not assume a customer-review platform is a marketplace for paid writers. G2’s FY26 pricing materials describe services for businesses collecting and managing reviews; they do not establish a universal, open per-review payment program. Confirm that a specific opportunity is for your kind of participation and check its terms before investing time. Some research work is confidential and cannot be used as a portfolio sample.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Sell review-adjacent expertise
Reviews build skills businesses may value beyond an article: testing, comparison research, technical editing and purchase analysis. Offer a defined service such as a software-stack comparison, product-selection report, accessibility audit, claims check, review-methodology design or buying consultation. A decision report can be more valuable to a client than a generic article, particularly when it reduces the risk of a costly purchase.

Upwork can be one lead source for legitimate research, writing and editing assignments, but its policy prohibits deceptive work such as fake product reviews. See Upwork’s prohibited-jobs policy. The platform lists minimums of $3 per hour and $5 per fixed-price project; those are platform floors, not recommended professional rates. Check Upwork’s minimum-rate information. Define scope, revisions, confidentiality and limits on advice in the agreement; do not represent a general buying report as legal, medical or security certification.
Build reviews readers can trust
You do not always have to own a product to write about it, but you must accurately describe your access. A purchased item, loaned unit, free sample, software trial, demo and second-hand source are different. Do not imply personal use if you did not test the product. If you only examined specifications or attended a briefing, call the piece a preview or analysis rather than a hands-on review. The FTC warns against claiming personal experience with a product that was not actually tried.

- Compare it with at least one realistic alternative for the same user or budget.

For Amazon Associates content, include its required statement in addition to a clear disclosure near affiliate links. A free or loaned product, sponsorship, employment relationship, discount or other benefit may also matter to readers. Rules vary by jurisdiction and platform; the FTC links above explain its U.S. guidance.
Build a portfolio and find the first assignment
- Pick a narrow starting beat. Choose products you can access and a reader group you understand, such as remote workers choosing webcams or small businesses evaluating scheduling software.
- Write two reviews and one comparison. Include test conditions, dated pricing, strengths, limitations and the best-fit reader for each product.
- Make a simple portfolio page and pitch sheet. Link the strongest work, list your subject expertise and describe the testing or research you can provide.
- Contact suitable editors, agencies and vendors. Pitch a timely reader problem and a concrete deliverable; tailor the proposal to the outlet or client.
- Track work and business results. Keep records of pitches, accepted assignments, fees, time spent, disclosures, versions, affiliate clicks and inquiries so you can see which route is worth pursuing.
How to combine income without compromising trust
A practical mix is to seek freelance or client assignments for direct fees while building one owned channel—a website or newsletter—for work that may compound over time. Add affiliate links only when they help readers act on a recommendation, and consider subscriptions once you can offer recurring value. Keep sponsored content visibly distinct from independent coverage, and use consistent evaluation criteria regardless of how a particular product could pay.
“Review income” can mean a cash assignment, performance-based commission, subscription revenue, research payment or consulting fee. Record which kind each opportunity offers before you commit; a product sample may offset a purchase but is not cash income.
