Microsoft no longer charges a separate Hotpatch fee for eligible Azure Arc-connected Windows Server 2025 Standard and Datacenter machines. The company originally announced a price of $1.50 per CPU core per month on April 24, 2025, but removed that charge on May 19, 2026.
That does not make every part of the setup free. Windows Server licensing, Azure Arc services, monitoring, security tools, Azure infrastructure, and other management features may still cost money.

The Windows Server Hotpatch pricing timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| April 24, 2025 | Microsoft announced a $1.50-per-CPU-core monthly subscription for Azure Arc-enabled Windows Server 2025 Hotpatching. |
| May 19, 2026 | Microsoft stopped charging separately for Hotpatch on eligible Azure Arc-connected Windows Server 2025 Standard and Datacenter machines. |
| August 18, 2026 | Microsoft documentation stated that eligible Hotpatch deployments were available at no additional cost. |
The original announcement is why older articles and search results may still say that Hotpatch costs $1.50 per core each month. That figure was real, but it is historical rather than the current price. Microsoft’s original announcement should therefore be read alongside its current Azure Update Manager documentation.

Microsoft says there is now no separate Hotpatch per-core meter, hourly charge, or Hotpatch invoice line for qualifying machines. Existing eligible servers remained enrolled, and Microsoft says billing stopped without requiring customer action.

However, Hotpatch is a servicing capability delivered through Azure Arc. It is not a blanket waiver of every cost associated with running or managing a Windows Server. Depending on the environment, a company may still pay for:
- Windows Server licensing or Windows Server pay-as-you-go licensing through Azure Arc;
- Azure Arc management and security services;
- Azure Update Manager or other management features, depending on the applicable licensing and service plan;
- Microsoft Defender, monitoring, policy, and log ingestion;
- Azure compute, storage, bandwidth, and support; and
- the usual Windows Server licensing and Client Access License obligations.
Microsoft’s Azure Arc pricing information makes clear that costs depend on the specific management and security services enabled. “Free Hotpatch” should not be interpreted as “free Azure Arc.”
Who can use free Hotpatch?
The current no-additional-charge policy applies to eligible Windows Server 2025 Standard and Datacenter machines connected through Azure Arc and enrolled for Hotpatch. This can include physical or virtual servers running on-premises, VMware, Hyper-V, AWS, GCP, or another multicloud platform.

- Windows Server 2025 Standard, Datacenter, or supported Datacenter: Azure Edition configurations;
- build 26100.1742 or later for the documented Arc enablement path;
- UEFI firmware and Secure Boot;
- the required Virtual Secure Mode or virtualization-based security configuration;
- Generation 2 for applicable Hyper-V virtual machines;
- an Azure Arc connection and supported Connected Machine agent; and
- the necessary Azure subscription and permissions.
Microsoft supports both Server Core and Desktop Experience. Build numbers and prerequisites can change with later servicing updates, so administrators should verify the current Microsoft Learn requirements before deployment.

Azure VMs, Azure Local, and Arc-connected servers are different
These scenarios should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Azure virtual machines: Supported Windows Server Datacenter: Azure Edition images have an Azure-oriented Hotpatch model.
- Azure Local: Supported Azure Edition deployments have their own platform and licensing context.
- Servers outside Azure: Ordinary Windows Server 2025 Standard and Datacenter machines generally use Azure Arc to access the documented Hotpatch path.

Hotpatch changes how certain supported updates are applied. It modifies in-memory code so eligible security updates can generally be installed without restarting Windows or affected applications.
The normal model still uses periodic baseline updates. A baseline cumulative update requires a restart, while eligible Hotpatch updates can usually be installed during the following months without one. In practice, Microsoft describes this as reducing planned reboots from roughly monthly to roughly quarterly, although the exact schedule and update eligibility can vary.
Administrators must still plan for restarts associated with:

For a qualifying Windows Server 2025 machine, Microsoft documents this Azure Arc workflow:
- Connect the server to Azure Arc.
- Sign in to the Azure portal and open Azure Arc → Machines.
- Select the server.
- Select Hotpatch.
- Select Confirm.
- Allow approximately 10 minutes for configuration to apply.
- Install eligible Hotpatch updates through Windows Update or manage them with Azure Update Manager.
Azure Update Manager provides a separate management workflow:
- Open Azure Update Manager.
- Under Resources, select Machines.
- Choose the Arc-enabled server.
- Find Hotpatch under recommended updates and select Change.
- Select Receive monthly Hotpatch updates.
- Select Enable Hotpatching and confirm.
Azure Update Manager can help with scheduling, maintenance windows, reporting, and fleet orchestration. It should not be confused with a current Hotpatch subscription fee.
Costs in common scenarios
| Scenario | Hotpatch treatment | Other cost considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed on-premises Windows Server 2025 | No separate Hotpatch charge if the Arc-connected server is eligible. | Azure Arc services, monitoring, security, and existing Windows licensing may still cost money. |
| Windows Server pay-as-you-go through Azure Arc | No separate Hotpatch charge if eligible. | Windows Server subscription licensing is billed separately. See Microsoft’s pay-as-you-go documentation. |
| Azure VM using Datacenter: Azure Edition | Uses the supported Azure Edition Hotpatch model. | Normal Azure VM, storage, bandwidth, monitoring, and related charges still apply. |
| Multicloud Arc-connected fleet | No additional Hotpatch charge under the current policy when eligible. | Azure Arc management, security, logging, and other enabled services may add cost. |
A powered-off server also requires care. Windows Server pay-as-you-go licensing is separate from Hotpatch, and Microsoft warns that billing can continue if pay-as-you-go is not disabled when a device is shut down or deprovisioned.

Operational risks to include in a cost calculation
Azure dependency
Arc-connected Hotpatch reduces reboot-related disruption but adds reliance on Azure registration, the Connected Machine agent, outbound connectivity, and Azure-side management workflows. That may be unacceptable for disconnected or tightly restricted environments.
Update compatibility
Microsoft has documented cases where particular update combinations affected Hotpatch eligibility. A historical 2025 example involved update levels that could leave enablement pending or make a machine incompatible with upcoming Hotpatch releases. Administrators should follow current release notes rather than installing arbitrary out-of-band updates and assuming Hotpatch will continue normally.
Pending enablement
If Hotpatch remains in a Pending state after the documented waiting period, check Azure Arc agent health, connectivity, firmware and security prerequisites, supported build levels, and permissions.
Licensing is separate from servicing
A perpetual Windows Server license, a Windows Server pay-as-you-go subscription, Azure Arc management, and Hotpatch eligibility are separate decisions. Qualifying for Hotpatch does not grant the virtualization rights or other licensing benefits associated with Datacenter edition.
When Hotpatch may be worthwhile
Hotpatch is most attractive when reboots are expensive, workloads have strict uptime requirements, servers are distributed across on-premises and multicloud environments, or security updates need to be deployed quickly without waiting for a maintenance window.

It may be a poor fit when the organization cannot use Azure-connected management services, the server cannot meet the technical prerequisites, existing maintenance windows already make quarterly reboots easy, or a local patching platform is strategically preferred.
Traditional Windows Update, WSUS-style tools, and third-party patch-management platforms remain alternatives. Azure Update Manager can provide centralized scheduling and compliance reporting, but no management tool can turn an ordinary unsupported Windows update into a Microsoft Hotpatch update. The reboot-free capability depends on Microsoft publishing a compatible Hotpatch package.
Bottom line for budgets and procurement
The headline “Windows Server 2025 Hotpatching to Require Monthly Fee” was historically accurate but is no longer accurate as a description of Microsoft’s current policy. The $1.50-per-core monthly charge was announced in April 2025 and removed on May 19, 2026.

For eligible Azure Arc-connected Windows Server 2025 Standard and Datacenter machines, Hotpatch now has no separate charge. The real budgeting question is what remains around it: Windows Server licensing, Azure Arc, update management, monitoring, security services, infrastructure, and support. Hotpatch also reduces—but does not eliminate—the need for planned quarterly maintenance reboots.
