Berman said NWSL officials had met with Blank several years earlier while the league was evaluating expansion. Rather than push him into a timetable, the league waited for Blank to decide that Atlanta had the organization, resources and operating commitment needed to launch a club properly.

That patience explains the significance of Berman’s account. The question was “when,” she said, not whether Blank would eventually proceed. Her description of the league’s invitation—“You let us know when you’re ready to do this with us”—casts Atlanta’s entry as an ownership-readiness decision rather than a last-minute effort to fill a map.

Blank already had a prominent role in Atlanta sports through his investment in Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United. That club became a league standard bearer for attendance, presentation and civic identity. The Blank family’s reputation for community-oriented operations also mattered to the NWSL, which wants expansion teams to become durable local institutions rather than short-lived sports properties.

Berman summarized that confidence by saying, “They’re under promisers and over deliverers.” In practical terms, the league is betting that Atlanta City FC will have the staffing, facilities, marketing reach and community relationships to support a top-flight women’s team over the long term.
Atlanta’s launch showed immediate local interest
Blank said approximately 15,000 people attended Atlanta City FC’s Sunday brand launch. He described that crowd as five times larger than any previous NWSL brand launch. The figure was presented during the panel discussion and was not independently audited in the report, so it should be treated as the ownership group’s stated attendance estimate rather than a verified league record.

Even with that qualification, the launch is an important signal. A brand event attracts people before a competitive roster, schedule or regular-season ticket experience exists. The turnout therefore suggests that Atlanta has a sizeable pool of potential supporters and that the club can draw on the city’s established appetite for major-league soccer.
How many NWSL clubs will there be?
Atlanta is part of a sequence of additions that takes the league to 18 clubs. Boston Legacy FC and Denver Summit FC are scheduled to begin play in 2026 as clubs 15 and 16. Atlanta City FC is club 17, followed by an unnamed Columbus expansion club as club 18.

This growth changes the league’s operating scale. More clubs create additional local markets, more matchups and a larger national footprint, but they also require the NWSL to maintain consistent standards for facilities, player support, travel and commercial execution.
The financial growth behind the expansion
Panel coverage said the average NWSL club valuation had grown threefold in a couple of years. That statement was attributed to the NWSL’s 2026 discussion and was not accompanied by an independently published calculation in the report. It nevertheless explains why owners with established sports portfolios are now considering the league more seriously: the NWSL is being treated as a rising sports asset, not only as a social-impact investment.

Expansion can increase the value of existing clubs by adding markets and media inventory, while new owners gain an opportunity to build a brand before the league reaches a more mature stage. The trade-off is that a larger league must convert attention into recurring revenue through attendance, sponsorship, media distribution and merchandise—not just one successful launch event.

What Atlanta means for women’s soccer
A stronger city-by-city footprint
Atlanta gives the NWSL a major southeastern market and adds another club capable of linking professional women’s soccer to a large metropolitan sports audience. The team’s impact will ultimately depend on repeat attendance and sustained community programs, not solely on the size of its unveiling.

More visibility for players
Berman said the league still needs more players to become recognizable to the general public. Trinity Rodman is one of the stars widely known outside the sport, but the NWSL wants a deeper group of iconic or generational names. She connected that goal to the 2031 Women’s World Cup in the United States, which gives the league several years to build player profiles before the tournament.
A test of the league’s next stage
Atlanta’s arrival will test whether the NWSL can turn rapid expansion into durable popularity. The league must give fans reasons to follow individual players, rivalries and local stories throughout the season. An 18-club competition can provide that variety, but only if the league’s marketing and broadcast presentation make the expanded player pool easy to discover.

The comparisons are mainly about league-building, ownership and visibility. MLS provides a nearby example of a soccer competition that used carefully selected expansion markets and strong local operators to build a national profile. The WNBA is a useful comparison for women’s professional sport: its growth has shown how player-led storytelling, recognizable stars and committed ownership can expand interest beyond the game itself.
Those comparisons do not mean the leagues have identical economics or schedules. The relevant lesson for Atlanta City FC is operational: invest in the supporter experience, make players household names and connect the club to its city. Blank’s record with Atlanta United gives the NWSL a reason to expect that approach, but the women’s team will need to establish its own identity rather than simply borrow the men’s club’s audience.
The Crest Cup adds another Blank-linked project
U.S. Soccer announced the Crest Cup, a competition named after Blank and modeled on the U.S. Open Cup. The announcement did not include a start date. Its eventual format and timing will determine whether it becomes a meaningful national showcase for professional and lower-division women’s clubs or remains primarily a ceremonial association with the new Atlanta ownership group.
