Asian Paints: Eight Nifty Stocks Reportedly Lost Money Over Five Years—Do You Own Any?

Asian Paints is one of the Nifty constituents reported to have delivered a negative five-year return. An Economic Times slideshow dated October 15, 2026, put the decline at nearly 29% for its observation period. A separate Upstox table, using a different five-year window, shows Asian Paints down 13.3% and identifies six other loss-making stocks. The two figures are not interchangeable, and the complete eight-stock list cannot be established from the available extract.

What the October 15, 2026 report says about Asian Paints

The Economic Times item reports that Asian Paints shares fell nearly 29% over five years. It also reports a decline of nearly 26% over three years and a 15% fall in 2026 so far, all as stated for that article’s observation date and measurement window.

The headline refers to eight Nifty stocks, but the available extract does not reproduce all eight names. It would be misleading to fill the gap by inference. Asian Paints is confirmed; the other names below come from a separate Upstox table and should not be presented as the definitive eight-stock list from the Economic Times slideshow.

Seven stocks shown as five-year losers in the Upstox table

Upstox reports the following results for its stated five-year period. It says the Nifty 50 gained more than 50% over that same period.

Stock Reported five-year return Approximate annualized equivalent*
HDFC Bank -6.4% -1.3% a year
Asian Paints -13.3% -2.8% a year
TCS -36.7% -8.7% a year
Infosys -34.3% -8.1% a year
Wipro -42.7% -10.5% a year
Hindustan Unilever -22.9% -5.1% a year
HDFC Life -17.6% -3.8% a year

*Annualized figures are mathematical equivalents derived from each reported cumulative loss over five years, assuming the period is exactly five years. They are not additional figures reported by Upstox. The summary available here does not establish whether dividends were included, so these percentages should not automatically be treated as total returns.

Why Asian Paints is down 29% in one report and 13.3% in another

Different start and end dates

A five-year return changes with every observation date. A calculation ending after a sharp rally can look materially better than one ending after a sell-off. The Economic Times and Upstox figures use different windows, so the gap does not by itself indicate an error.

Price return versus total return

A price return measures the change in the quoted share price. A total return also credits dividends, usually assuming reinvestment. Before comparing a stock with the Nifty 50, check which definition each source uses. The available summaries do not provide enough methodology to call either Asian Paints percentage a total return.

Bonus issues and the 10:1 split

Asian Paints investor materials discuss bonus issues and a 10:1 stock split. Corporate actions change the number of shares and the historical price series. A chart that is not adjusted consistently can make an old price appear incomparable with today’s price. Use an adjusted series and record the observation date whenever you calculate a long-term return.

How a stock can lose money while the Nifty rises

An index is a portfolio, not a single share. Its return combines many companies, sectors and weights. Strong performance from some constituents can offset losses in others. The Upstox period’s more-than-50% Nifty gain therefore does not require every constituent to be profitable.

Sector exposure also matters. Information-technology, consumer, financial and industrial companies respond differently to currency moves, interest rates, demand cycles, regulation and valuation changes. A diversified index can rise even when a particular sector—or a heavily owned stock within it—falls for years.

How to find out whether you own one of these stocks

  1. Export your current holdings. Use your broker or demat account’s holdings statement and include the exchange symbol, quantity and average cost.
  2. Match symbols, not just names. Check the exact listed company and exchange; similarly named securities can be different instruments.
  3. Choose the return definition. Decide whether you want price return or a dividend-adjusted total return, and use the same definition for every stock and for the Nifty benchmark.
  4. Fix the dates. Record the closing price on the chosen start date and the latest closing price. Do not mix the Economic Times window with the Upstox window.
  5. Adjust for corporate actions. Confirm that bonus issues and the 10:1 split are reflected in the historical series and in your share quantity.
  6. Compare like with like. Calculate the stock’s cumulative and annualized return, then compare it with the Nifty 50 over the identical dates.
  7. Review the exposure. A negative result is a prompt to examine business performance, valuation, position size, sector concentration and your original investment thesis—not an automatic buy, sell or hold signal.

What the numbers do—and do not—tell you

A five-year loss describes what happened between two dates; it does not forecast the next five years. It also says nothing about your personal result unless your purchase date, dividends, taxes, fees and additional buys match the measurement. A stock can have a negative headline return while an investor who bought at a different time has a gain, and the reverse can also occur.

For Asian Paints specifically, keep the nearly 29% Economic Times figure, the separate 13.3% Upstox figure and their dates in separate records. The six other names in the Upstox table—HDFC Bank, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Hindustan Unilever and HDFC Life—are corroborating examples, not confirmation of the missing eighth name in the Economic Times slideshow.
