In December 2014, Amazon published a shopping-only Android app after Google revised its Play Store rules to bar apps that facilitated distributing Android apps outside Google Play. Amazon’s existing app had added that capability months earlier, so the company kept ordinary shopping on Google Play and directed users seeking its broader app-store experience to Amazon’s own download channel.
What Amazon added to its Android app
On September 9, 2014, Amazon said it had updated its Amazon App for Android Phones. The app combined shopping for physical products with access to Amazon’s digital catalog, Prime Instant Video, and a new “Apps & Games” section. Contemporary reporting described the section as a functioning storefront: users could browse, search for, buy, and install apps through Amazon, rather than simply follow a link to a webpage. Amazon’s 2014 statement also claimed Prime Instant Video offered streaming access to more than 40,000 movies and TV episodes. That was Amazon’s figure at the time, not a current catalog count.

On September 25, 2014, Google revised its Google Play Developer Distribution Agreement. Section 4.5, titled “Alternative Stores,” said developers could not use Google Play to distribute or make available products whose purpose was to facilitate distributing Android applications or games outside Google Play. The archived agreement is the primary source for the rule’s wording.

Contemporary coverage contrasted the revision with earlier wording that focused on an app’s “primary purpose.” A shopping app could plausibly be described as primarily for shopping even if it also offered another app store. The revised clause focused on whether a product facilitated outside app distribution, making that distinction less useful. Android Authority’s contemporary explanation discusses that change.
The sequence matters: Amazon added the app-store functionality before Google changed the agreement. The issue was not a technical failure in Amazon’s app; the new rule made its alternative-store feature incompatible with distribution through Google Play.

What changed in December 2014
On December 11, Amazon said it had removed its existing app from Google Play and published a separate Amazon Shopping app. TechCrunch reported that the old listing was no longer discoverable through Play Store search; Android Authority covered the replacement on December 12. The new app retained Amazon shopping but omitted the integrated Appstore functionality.

The two apps were therefore not functionally identical: the important change was the removal of direct access to Amazon’s alternative app store, not a wholesale reinvention of shopping.

How users could get the broader Amazon experience
Amazon said people seeking the “best Amazon experience” could download the Amazon App for Android Phones from amazon.com/androidapp. That meant installing the app outside Google Play. Contemporary reporting described extra steps, including enabling Android to install apps from outside the Play Store.
That is a historical description, not present-day setup guidance. Android’s security controls, app names, and Amazon’s distribution channels may have changed since 2014; the period’s download path and prompts should not be assumed to work today.

Did Google remove Amazon’s app?
The careful answer is that Amazon said it removed the old app from Google Play, while contemporary reporting said the listing had disappeared from Play search. Those facts do not establish that Google remotely deleted the app from every phone or immediately disabled existing installations. Reports at the time said people who already had it could continue using it, at least temporarily; they do not establish that it remained available indefinitely.
It is also imprecise to say simply that Google “banned Amazon.” Google changed the distribution agreement; Amazon then chose to publish a compliant shopping replacement on Google Play and keep the fuller app experience outside that channel. The available accounts do not show that Google ordered Amazon to create a new app, or establish a definitive legal or antitrust finding.

Why the split mattered beyond shopping
The episode exposed a distinction at the center of Android’s app ecosystem. Android could permit software to be installed from outside Google Play, but distribution through Google Play remained subject to Google’s contractual rules. Google’s policy treated facilitation of an alternative store as incompatible with Play distribution; Amazon operated a competing app store and wanted its catalog accessible to Android users.
For users, the result was a fragmented experience: a familiar shopping app from Google Play, and a separate route for Amazon’s broader digital offerings. For Amazon, splitting the apps preserved shopping distribution through Play without carrying the feature that conflicted with the revised rule. That strategic benefit is an inference from the company’s choice, not a stated legal requirement.
