How much did Netflix prices increase?
Netflix’s March 2026 U.S. increase added $1 or $2 to each main plan’s monthly price. The table compares the listed retail rates before and after the change; annual figures are simple calculations at those monthly rates, before taxes, promotions, or partner-billing differences.

The reported U.S. rollout began March 26, 2026, for new and upgrading customers. Existing subscribers’ first higher charge depends on their billing date and the notice they receive. Netflix says it emails members about a price change one month before the billing date when the new price applies; monthly billing is generally tied to the signup date. Check the notice and the next charge shown in your account rather than assuming every subscriber’s bill changed on March 26. If Netflix is billed through a mobile carrier, cable company, Apple, or another partner, the provider may control the price notice, plan changes, or cancellation. The amount charged can also differ because of taxes, promotions, or bundle terms.

What extra members add to the bill
Netflix lists extra-member access at $7.99 per month with ads or $9.99 without ads, where supported. The ad-supported extra-member option is not permission to add members to a Standard with Ads account: Netflix’s account-sharing guidance says extra members cannot be added on ad-supported plans. Standard supports one slot and Premium up to two; partner packages may differ. Netflix’s current rules and setup details are at its extra-member help page.

For example, Premium plus two ad-free extra members totals $46.97 per month before taxes ($26.99 plus $9.99 twice), using Netflix’s listed rates. Extra-member charges are separate from the base-plan increase, so households should assess their full bill rather than only the headline plan price.

Why Netflix says it raised prices
Netflix says it adjusts prices as it adds entertainment value and invests in improving the member experience. That is the company’s stated rationale, not a guarantee that a particular price increase will produce a specific show, event, or improvement. Netflix’s Q1 2026 shareholder letter also described recent price changes as having gone well, listed the U.S. ad plan at $8.99 per month, and discussed the ad plan’s share of sign-ups or plan activity. It should not be recast as a claim that ads account for 60% of all subscribers.
The broader business context is that Netflix is pursuing revenue from both subscriptions and advertising while investing in programming and formats including live events. The company has identified pricing, membership growth, and advertising revenue as business drivers; that context does not establish that the increase directly finances any particular content. Ways to respond to the higher price
Downgrade if the features matter less than the savings
Standard with Ads is the lowest-priced current U.S. option. It may suit a viewer who accepts interruptions and does not rely on locked titles, unsupported devices, or extra-member sharing. Standard is the middle option for two people who want ad-free 1080p viewing. Premium is most defensible for households that actually use 4K/HDR, four simultaneous streams, or its larger download allowance.

Cancel or pause if you watch intermittently
If Netflix is mainly for particular releases, canceling between viewing periods can be more economical than paying year-round. Netflix says access ordinarily continues through the end of the current billing period after cancellation. It retains viewing activity, recommendations, account details, and related data for up to 24 months. Pausing may also be available to eligible accounts.

- Open your Netflix account page.
- Select Cancel.
- Select Finish Cancellation.
- Keep the confirmation email and verify the account page reflects the cancellation.
Signing out or deleting the app does not end billing. If a provider bills you, cancellation generally has to be handled through that provider. See Netflix’s cancellation instructions.
Check for an existing bundle before opening a second subscription
A mobile, internet, cable, or television package may already include Netflix or offer it as an add-on. The effective price and available plan can depend on the provider; upgrading may cost extra, and account linking matters to avoid paying twice. Netflix has package guidance for Verizon and Dish. Confirm current terms with the provider rather than assuming a bundle is cheaper.
Compare the price with your actual viewing
A simple budgeting check is monthly plan price divided by hours watched that month. For example, if a household watches 20 hours on a $19.99 Standard plan, the arithmetic is about $1 per viewing hour. This is only a way to compare spending with use; it does not measure the quality of the shows or whether the service is worth it to you.

Choosing without overpaying
- Choose Standard with Ads if the lowest bill matters most and ads, title restrictions, and device limitations are acceptable.
- Keep Standard if two people want ad-free Full HD and do not need 4K or multiple extra members.
- Keep Premium if your household uses its 4K/HDR picture, four concurrent streams, spatial audio, or multiple extra-member slots enough to justify the higher bill.
- Cancel or rotate subscriptions if you only watch Netflix during selected releases or already have more services than you use.
- Review provider billing if Netflix is included with another service or you cannot manage the plan directly on Netflix.
For a household with outside-the-home viewers, include extra-member charges in the comparison. Netflix says extra members generally must be activated in the same country where the account was created; support can vary with third-party packages. If you move countries, Netflix says pricing and plan availability change by country, and changing the account’s country and currency generally requires canceling and restarting in the new country.
