If a crypto exchange restricts your account for a compliance review, first verify the notice inside the official app or website. Then answer the exact questions through the authenticated support workflow, submit accurate and relevant records, and keep dated proof of every exchange and upload. Ask which functions are blocked, whether any withdrawal is allowed, what deadline applies, and how to escalate. A compliance review is not automatically a finding of wrongdoing, but a court-, law-enforcement- or sanctions-directed freeze may leave the exchange unable to release funds or explain details.
Do these things before sending any information
- Open the exchange yourself. Type the address you normally use or open the official mobile app. Do not follow a link in an unexpected email, text message or social-media direct message. Look for an in-account notice after signing in. Kraken Support says, “A genuine request will always be visible on your account after you log in.”
- Confirm the case is real. Use the support route shown in the authenticated account. A legitimate compliance workflow should not require your password, two-factor authentication code, recovery phrase, remote-control access or a transfer of crypto to a new address. Anyone asking for those items is not helping with a normal review.
- Write down the exact restriction. Test and record whether you can sign in, trade, deposit fiat, deposit crypto, withdraw fiat, withdraw crypto and use other account services. A restriction on trading or deposits is materially different from a block on withdrawals.
- Save the notice and deadline. Capture the wording, date, case number and any displayed due date. Do not assume that a deadline mentioned by a purported agent is genuine; rely on the date shown in the authenticated account or confirmed by official support.
- Secure the account if anything looks unfamiliar. Review recent logins, devices, API keys, email activity and transactions. Change the exchange password through the official site, secure the associated email account and verify two-factor authentication. If you see an unauthorized transaction, report it through the exchange’s security channel immediately.
What kind of “freeze” is it?
People use “freeze” for several different events. Identifying the state determines what you can reasonably ask for next.

These categories can overlap. For example, an exchange may impose a security hold while it investigates a suspicious login and separately request source-of-funds documents.

Kraken’s explanation of temporary funding suspensions lists several possible triggers: a security concern, suspected malicious activity, a withdrawal destination associated with prohibited or scam-related activity, a reversed payment, inaccurate identity information or failure to answer a request. Those are examples from Kraken’s policy, not a complete list for every platform.

An information request can also follow a change in how you use an account or a material change in transaction size or type. The request itself does not establish misconduct. Kraken’s October 1, 2026 support guidance states, “Receiving a request does not mean you have done anything wrong.” Binance similarly explains that an account can remain locked during a request-for-information process until sufficient information is supplied. Neither statement creates a universal timetable or guarantee that a restriction will be lifted.
How to answer the compliance request
Read each question literally
Separate the questions into identity, address, banking, source of funds, source of wealth, transaction history and wallet control. Submit only what answers the request. A large, unrelated bundle of sensitive records can create privacy and review problems without helping the analyst resolve the case.
Use consistent facts
Names, dates, amounts, employers, companies, bank accounts and wallet addresses should align across your explanation and documents. If money came from several sources, describe the chain in chronological order. If a document is unavailable, say why and identify an alternative record rather than altering or backdating anything.

Common documents and what they establish

The examples above come from exchange guidance and are not a universal checklist. The platform, account history and legal entity determine what it can request.
Check the portal after uploading
Kraken’s instructions allow users to review the status of individual items, submit them separately and replace an item marked as needing an update. If the portal says your submission is incomplete, ask which specific item remains outstanding instead of repeatedly uploading everything.
What if you cannot withdraw?
Ask support, in writing, five precise questions:
- Which functions are disabled right now?
- Is the restriction an information review, a security hold, a payment issue, an account closure or an authority-directed freeze?
- Are fiat or crypto withdrawals allowed through any verified destination?
- What information or event will allow the restriction to be reconsidered?
- What is the case reference, current status and next update date?
Do not assume that a rule described on one help page applies to your case. Kraken’s information-request page says that, in the situation it describes, unanswered requests may pause activity such as trading or deposits while withdrawals are not affected. A separate restriction notice can have different consequences. Coinbase says some closures leave a route to send remaining crypto or cash out to a verified bank account, while exceptional freezes may be required by a court or other authority or by sanctions law.

If the exchange closes your account
Closure is not identical to a continuing compliance review. Kraken says that, after closure, remaining balances may be withdrawn to a previously linked bank account in the customer’s name unless further verification or legal or compliance restrictions apply. It also warns that a withdrawal can be held for manual review. Coinbase describes a similar distinction between ordinary closure procedures and exceptional freezes.
Follow the closure instructions exactly, use an account in your own name and keep evidence that you requested the balance withdrawal. If you believe the closure was mistaken, ask support for a second review and retain the case reference. Kraken says closure decisions are generally final even though a customer can request escalation.
Build a complete case file
Keep an offline, dated folder containing:
- The original restriction or closure notice and every later message.
- Case numbers, support-agent names or IDs and the channel used.
- Copies of every document submitted, including the file name and upload date.
- Upload confirmations and screenshots of item-status changes.
- Relevant transaction IDs, bank references, wallet addresses and dates.
- A timeline of your replies, promised updates and actual responses.
- A record of financial impact, such as a missed payment or inability to meet a contractual deadline.
Store the file securely. Do not post identity documents, account screenshots or wallet details publicly while seeking help.

How to escalate when support does not resolve it
Use the exchange’s formal complaint route
Ask for the published complaint or appeal process, submit a concise chronology and request a written case reference. State the exact remedy you want: completion of the review, clarification of the blocked functions, a permitted withdrawal, correction of inaccurate account data or an explanation of the next procedural step.
Identify the correct legal entity
An exchange brand may operate through different companies in different countries. The relevant regulator, ombudsman, court and complaint deadline depend on the entity named in your account terms and your location. There is no single worldwide regulator or universal appeal route for frozen crypto accounts.

If a substantial balance is inaccessible, an authority or sanctions order is mentioned, the delay is causing significant harm or you receive a formal legal notice, consult a lawyer licensed in the relevant jurisdiction. Bring the case file and account terms. A lawyer cannot guarantee release of funds, particularly where a court or sanctions restriction controls what the exchange may do.

How long can a compliance freeze last?
No common service-level deadline is established. Binance says an account may remain locked during a request-for-information process until sufficient information is provided; Kraken says outcomes and restrictions depend on the case. Follow the due date displayed in your account and request status updates through the authenticated channel rather than relying on a promised number of days.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s November 2022 complaint bulletin describes consumers who reported verification-related access problems lasting weeks or months. Those complaints illustrate the potential hardship, but they are not a representative frequency estimate or a guaranteed duration. A legal freeze can last according to the underlying authority’s process, which may be outside ordinary customer support.
Scams and actions that can make the situation worse
- Ignore unsolicited “recovery agents” who demand an upfront fee or promise an insider release.
- Never provide a password, two-factor code, recovery phrase, private key or remote computer access.
- Never send crypto to an address said to “unlock” or “verify” your balance.
- Do not route funds through another person’s account or create accounts to evade a restriction.
- Do not edit, fabricate, crop out material facts from or backdate compliance documents.
- Do not keep resubmitting random files; ask which requirement is unsatisfied.
Kraken’s published security guidance specifically warns that its information requests will not ask for credentials, recovery phrases, remote access or a transfer to another address.

Questions to ask yourself before escalating
- Can I still sign in, and is the notice visible in the account?
- Is only trading or depositing paused, or are withdrawals also blocked?
- Have I answered every displayed question with accurate, relevant evidence?
- Do my identity, bank, transaction and wallet explanations match?
- Have I preserved the case number, uploads and dates?
- Does the notice mention a court, law-enforcement agency or sanctions requirement?
- Am I dealing with official support rather than a person who contacted me unexpectedly?
Key point
A compliance restriction is handled most effectively as a documented, authenticated process: verify the notice, identify the exact blocked function, provide the requested evidence accurately, secure the account and escalate through the correct legal and complaint channels. The outcome and timing depend on the exchange entity, your facts and any authority involved; no general promise of release or fixed deadline is reliable.
