Bitcoin prices fall when selling pressure overwhelms buying demand. The initial trigger can be a change in risk appetite, an adverse economic or crypto-specific event, or a reversal of crowded positioning. Leverage, funding stress and forced liquidations can then turn an orderly decline into a rapid sell-off. Cross-market links also change over time: Bitcoin has traded more closely with stocks in some turbulent periods, but a New York Fed event study found no consistent direct response to monetary and macroeconomic news in its sample.
That combination explains why no single headline reliably accounts for every decline. To understand a particular move, separate the likely initiating event from the market structure that may have amplified it, then check whether the evidence applies to the same period, venue and price measure.

What makes Bitcoin prices fall?
Bitcoin’s price is set continuously by the balance between buyers and sellers. A fall begins when demand weakens or selling demand rises enough to move the market lower. The reason for that shift may be visible—such as a broad rotation away from risky assets—or difficult to identify because several pieces of information arrive at once.

Research from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) finds return and volatility spillovers between crypto assets and traditional financial markets. Those spillovers become stronger during turbulence, negative economic or financial news, crypto-market events and other shocks. The direction can also reverse during financial stress, so a stock-market decline and a Bitcoin decline may reflect a common shock rather than a simple one-way cause.

Once the price starts moving, leverage and funding requirements can create additional sellers. This distinction matters: a liquidation wave can help explain the speed and depth of a decline without being the original reason investors changed their positions.
Three questions to ask about any sell-off
- What may have started it? Look for a risk-asset rotation, adverse news, a crypto-specific event or a change in positioning.
- What amplified it? Check leverage, collateral calls, funding pressure and forced position reductions.
- What exactly moved? Distinguish spot Bitcoin from futures prices and identify the time period behind any claimed stock-market or macroeconomic relationship.
How leverage creates a liquidation loop
Leverage lets a trader control a position larger than the funds posted as collateral. It increases gains when prices move in the trader’s favor, but it also means a relatively small adverse move can make the collateral insufficient. A broker or exchange may require more funds, reduce the position or liquidate it under its rules.
- Prices turn lower. A fall reduces the value of leveraged long positions.
- Collateral requirements rise relative to account equity. Traders facing a margin call may add funds or sell assets.
- Forced reductions add market orders. Liquidations sell into a market that is already under pressure.
- The next price move affects more leveraged positions. Additional accounts can then face margin pressure, producing a feedback loop.
The New York Fed’s November 2024 overview identifies widespread leverage, funding risk, valuation pressures and interconnectedness as vulnerabilities in digital-asset markets. BIS research likewise links high leverage and crypto-carry conditions with crash risk. These mechanisms show how a decline can accelerate; they do not prove that liquidation independently caused every Bitcoin fall.

Crypto carry is the gap between a futures price and the spot price, expressed as a return over a period. When futures trade at a substantial premium, traders may be paying for leveraged upside exposure or for the balance-sheet capacity needed to arbitrage the difference.

In its 2023 Working Paper 1087, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) reported that crypto carry averaged above 10% annually in its dataset and reached as high as 60% annualized. Those are study-period findings, not a current market quote or a normal target. The authors attribute variation in carry mainly to volatile convenience yields associated with smaller investors chasing leveraged upside and the relative scarcity of arbitrage capital.
The paper found that high carry predicted future crashes in its sample. “Predicted” describes a statistical relationship, not a timetable or certainty that a crash is imminent. Cash-and-carry positions designed to exploit the futures premium can also face sudden margin increases. If prices fall and those trades are unwound, their selling can add to the decline.
Why carry is a warning sign, not a countdown clock
- A high premium can indicate crowded demand for leveraged exposure.
- Arbitrage capital may be too scarce to close the gap quickly.
- Margin requirements can rise for both directional and arbitrage positions during a drawdown.
- The indicator does not identify the date, size or trigger of a future fall.
Bitcoin’s changing relationship with stocks and other markets
Bitcoin is not insulated from traditional markets in every period. IMF analysis published in January 2022 reported the following historical figures:

The increase from 0.01 in 2017–19 to 0.36 in 2020–21 indicates that the relationship changed as market conditions changed. A correlation does not establish that a particular stock-market move caused a Bitcoin decline. Investors may have responded to a common economic shock, or the channels may have operated in both directions.

The IMF’s 2023 working paper similarly finds that spillovers intensify during turbulent periods, negative news and exogenous shocks. It also finds that the direction of spillovers can reverse during financial stress. Therefore, a chart showing Bitcoin and equities moving together is evidence of co-movement for that window, not a universal rule for the next one.
What macroeconomic news can—and cannot—explain
Interest-rate decisions, inflation reports and other economic releases can affect broad risk appetite, funding conditions and asset valuations. That makes a macro channel plausible in some episodes, but the evidence does not support a mechanical rule that every announcement moves Bitcoin in the same direction.
A New York Fed event study by Gianluca Benigno and Carlo Rosa, published in February 2023 as Staff Report 1052, found Bitcoin to be orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news in its sample. In that study, the measured news surprises did not produce a systematic Bitcoin response. This result addresses a particular sample and method; it does not establish that Bitcoin is permanently independent of the economy.
Other research documents changing cross-market spillovers, and the BIS’s March 2026 Quarterly Review describes a later episode in which risk-asset pressure and leverage interacted. The two findings can coexist: Bitcoin may show little immediate response to a specific scheduled announcement while still moving with broader assets during a period of generalized stress.

A dated example: the drawdown discussed by BIS in March 2026
The BIS Quarterly Review, “Markets recalibrate amid shifting currents,” published in March 2026, reported that Bitcoin had fallen about 50% from its 2025 highs after technology stocks declined. The review said leveraged long liquidations probably exacerbated the move.
This is a description of the period covered by that review, not a claim about Bitcoin’s price on every date in 2026 and not proof that the technology-stock decline was the sole cause. It illustrates the initiating-event/amplifier framework: pressure in a related risk-asset market may have weakened demand, while leveraged positions likely increased forced selling.

More than one channel can operate at once. The cited studies do not provide a deterministic decomposition that can assign an exact percentage of a future Bitcoin decline to any one cause.

What “crypto volatility” means in practice
Volatility is the size and frequency of price changes, not simply the direction of a move. A market can be volatile while rising, falling or moving sharply in both directions. In crypto markets, leverage and the continuous repricing of positions can make short windows look dramatically different from longer averages.
There is no published statistic in the cited material that establishes a universal “normal” level of Bitcoin volatility or reliably predicts the next move. A volatility number is meaningful only with its measurement window, price series and calculation method. Comparing a spot return with a futures volatility measure, or comparing a crisis week with a quiet year, can produce a misleading conclusion.
Systemic-risk context: important, but not a day-to-day explanation
The New York Fed’s November 2024 overview said digital-asset vulnerabilities had made a limited contribution to systemic risk at that time because the ecosystem remained relatively small, supplied few financial services and had limited connections to traditional finance. The IMF’s later work describes increasing interconnections and the potential for spillovers.
Those assessments concern the financial system as a whole. They should not be used as a shorthand explanation for an individual Bitcoin candle. A market can experience a severe crypto-specific liquidation without threatening the broader banking system, while wider financial connections can become more relevant in a different period.
A practical checklist before concluding why Bitcoin fell
- Define the window. Record the start and end time, region and whether the comparison uses spot or futures prices.
- Separate contemporaneous news from hindsight. List events known when the move began, rather than treating every later headline as the trigger.
- Check positioning. Look for evidence of leverage, unusually high futures carry, funding stress or reported liquidations.
- Test the cross-market story. Ask whether stocks and other risk assets moved in the same window and whether the historical relationship being cited covers that period.
- State uncertainty honestly. If several channels fit the facts, describe them as interacting explanations rather than declaring a single proven cause.
Bottom line
Bitcoin prices usually fall when demand or risk appetite weakens, but the size of the decline depends heavily on market structure. Leverage, funding needs, high futures carry and forced liquidations can amplify an initial shock. Bitcoin’s connection with stocks and macroeconomic news is time-dependent: historical correlations have risen in some periods, while a New York Fed event study found no uniform direct response to macro news in its sample. Treat indicators such as carry and liquidation data as context, not as precise crash-timing tools.
