Before placing an order, independently verify the ticker and original claim, check who is promoting it and what they may gain, understand the company’s business, read its latest public filings, test the claim against disclosed risks and financial condition, and check whether the trade fits your time horizon, risk tolerance, plan, and costs. If material facts remain unverified or the pitch depends on urgency, crowd excitement, or promises of high returns with little risk, pause rather than trade.
The checklist below is general U.S. investor-education guidance, not a recommendation for any particular security. A stock’s suitability depends on the specific issuer and your personal circumstances.

Start by treating the mention as an unverified lead
A watchlist entry, newsletter line, group-chat message, or social-media post tells you only that someone wants attention on a security. It does not establish that the company is financially sound, fairly valued, or appropriate for you. The first task is to turn a vague mention into a precisely identified claim that can be checked.

- Write down the company’s legal name, ticker symbol, exchange, and share class. Confirm those details through a reliable market or issuer source rather than copying a screenshot or forwarded message.
- Check whether the ticker belongs to the company being discussed. Similar symbols, renamed companies, foreign listings, warrants, preferred shares, and over-the-counter securities can create costly confusion.
- Record the date and wording of the original claim. “This could benefit from a new contract” is a different, testable statement from “this stock will double.”
Trace the mention to its first available post, report, filing, or announcement. Reposts, clipped videos, anonymous accounts, and unattributed screenshots are not independent confirmation. Keeping the original wording prevents a confident paraphrase from replacing what was actually said.

Check who made the claim and what incentive exists
The promoter’s identity and compensation can matter as much as the claim itself. A person may own the stock, be paid to promote it, be selling an investment service, or be trying to create buyers for a position they already hold.
Questions to ask about the source
- Is the author named, reachable, and independently verifiable?
- Does the person disclose ownership, compensation, a business relationship with the issuer, or a plan to sell?
- Are past predictions documented in full, including failures, or only shown after a successful move?
- Is the message educational and evidence-based, or does it demand immediate action?
- Is the offer being made through a registered investment professional or an unknown account?
Investor.gov’s investor resources advise checking the registration and background of anyone offering or selling an investment. A registration check does not prove that a recommendation is good, but an inability to verify the person is a reason to stop and investigate further.
Recognize pressure and fraud signals
Be especially cautious when a message combines unusually high-return promises with little or no stated risk. Other warning signs include countdowns, claims that a private group has secret information, instructions to move a conversation to an encrypted group chat, requests for payment before details are provided, and assurances that a trade is guaranteed. The SEC’s investor alerts describe social-media stock-tip scams and impersonation of investment professionals; urgency and exclusivity are common ways to discourage independent checking.

Understand what the company actually does
Before looking at ratios or price charts, make sure you can explain the business in plain language. Read the issuer’s description of its products or services, customers, geographic markets, and how it makes money. Identify whether revenue comes from one product, a few large customers, subscriptions, advertising, licensing, commodity sales, or another source.

Build a one-page business summary
- Offering: What does the company sell or provide?
- Customer: Who pays, and how concentrated are those customers?
- Revenue engine: What event creates revenue, and is it recurring or one-time?
- Costs: Which expenses rise when sales grow, and which are fixed?
- Competition: What alternatives can customers choose?
- Dependencies: Does the company rely on suppliers, licenses, regulation, a platform, or a small number of employees?
If you cannot describe the business and its main risks after reading the company’s own explanation and filings, that is a research problem, not a reason to rely more heavily on the original tip. Complexity can hide important assumptions about demand, financing, or regulation.
Use primary disclosures before commentary
Investor.gov identifies the SEC’s EDGAR system as a way to research investments and provides guidance on reading Form 10-K and Form 8-K reports. These filings are the starting point for checking whether a watchlist claim matches what the issuer has actually disclosed.
Which filings answer which questions?

Open the newest available filings, note their filing dates, and compare every material assertion in the mention with the issuer’s disclosure. A post saying that a contract is “secured” should be checked for the contract’s disclosed size, duration, conditions, customer identity, and expected financial effect. If the filing says an agreement is nonbinding, subject to approvals, or not expected to contribute material revenue, the social description is incomplete.

Read risks and cash information, not only headline growth
Risk-factor sections can be long, but they identify the events management considers capable of harming the business. Look for customer concentration, dependence on financing, regulatory approvals, litigation, cybersecurity incidents, supply constraints, competition, currency exposure, and the possibility of issuing more shares.

Review cash from operations, capital spending, debt maturities, interest costs, and available cash. A company can report sales growth while consuming cash or repeatedly raising capital. Compare management’s explanation with the financial statements rather than treating a single adjusted metric as proof of financial strength.
Test the claim against evidence, not sentiment
Social posts can point you toward a topic, but they are not primary evidence. The SEC’s Feb. 6, 2026 Investor Alert states: “Investors should never make investment decisions based solely on information from social media platforms or apps.” That language is attributed to the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance and Division of Enforcement. The alert is investor-education guidance, not a personalized recommendation or a prediction about a particular stock.
Sentiment tools introduce another layer of uncertainty. A joint SEC and FINRA bulletin dated Apr. 3, 2019 says: “DO NOT RELY SOLELY on social sentiment investing tools to make investment decisions.” Such tools may use different data sets, sampling rules, time windows, and algorithms. Review their collection methods, limitations, disclosures, conflicts, and risk statements before assigning meaning to a score.
Convert a social claim into a checkable question

Do not let a sentiment score, message volume, or trending label substitute for business analysis. Crowd enthusiasm can change quickly, while the company’s obligations and disclosed risks remain.

Evaluate the decision in your own financial context
A good company can still be a poor purchase for a particular investor at a particular time. Consider the role the position would play in your broader plan, how long you can leave the money invested, and how much loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan.
Set a time horizon before you look for a trade
Decide whether you are evaluating a long-term ownership position or a short-term trade. The evidence needed for a multi-year investment differs from the information needed for a short-lived strategy, but neither approach makes social-media urgency a substitute for due diligence. SEC guidance warns that short-term trading based on social media can carry significant risk and that emotion can disrupt long-term goals.
Consider concentration and liquidity
- Would the purchase make one company, sector, or theme an outsized part of your holdings?
- Could you withstand a large decline without needing the money for near-term expenses?
- Is there enough trading liquidity for your intended order, especially if the security is thinly traded?
- Could a gap in the price, trading halt, or wide spread change the result?
These questions do not produce a universal “safe” position size. They force the decision to account for consequences outside the excitement surrounding the mention.

A ratio or ranking can be a starting point, not a guarantee. Ask what future growth, margins, interest rates, dilution, or cash flows the valuation assumes. Then ask which disclosed risk could invalidate those assumptions. Record the assumptions and the evidence supporting them so a moving price or popular narrative does not silently change your thesis.
Confirm fees, account terms, and order mechanics
Investor.gov notes that stock transactions and brokerage services may involve fees. Charges and account terms depend on the broker or plan; no current fee schedule for a specific provider is established here. Before submitting an order, review the actual schedule and terms for your account.
Items to verify at the account level
- Commission or transaction charges, if any, and regulatory or exchange-related fees
- Foreign-exchange, wire, custody, transfer, or account-maintenance charges that could apply
- Whether the security is eligible for your account and whether margin or options permissions change the risk
- How market, limit, stop, and extended-hours orders behave on that platform
- Settlement, cancellation, and order-routing terms
Do not assume that a low advertised commission means the trade is costless. Confirm the total terms with the provider and consider how spreads, taxes, and repeated trading affect the result.

Use a pause rule when evidence is incomplete
Stopping is a legitimate due-diligence outcome. Do not buy while any of the following remains unresolved:
- You cannot confirm the company, ticker, share class, or original claim.
- The source is anonymous, impersonated, undisclosed about conflicts, or unregistered when registration should be verifiable.
- The business is too difficult for you to explain, or key revenue and financing assumptions are unclear.
- The latest filings are missing, stale, inconsistent with the claim, or reveal risks you have not assessed.
- The pitch relies on guaranteed or unusually high returns, urgency, secret information, or group pressure.
- You have not checked how the position fits your time horizon, risk tolerance, diversification, and available cash.
- You do not know the fees, account restrictions, or order terms that would apply.
Investor.gov recommends taking time and researching thoroughly rather than feeling pressured. A watchlist can remain a watchlist while you wait for a filing, clarification, or a decision that fits your plan. Missing evidence is itself information: it means the basis for acting has not been established.
A repeatable pre-purchase worksheet
Use the following sequence for each mention and keep the answers with the date of your review:
- Identify: Record the verified company name, ticker, exchange, share class, and the exact original claim.
- Trace: Locate the first source and note whether it is a filing, issuer announcement, named analyst, registered professional, or anonymous post.
- Check incentives: Record ownership, compensation, affiliations, and any pressure to act.
- Understand: Write a plain-language description of the offering, customers, revenue engine, competitors, and dependencies.
- Read disclosures: Open the latest 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, and relevant proxy or announcement; note filing dates and material changes.
- Test: Match each important claim with a disclosed fact, and list what remains unconfirmed.
- Assess risk: Review liquidity, debt, cash generation, dilution, legal or regulatory exposure, and concentration in your own portfolio.
- Price the decision: Write down the valuation assumptions, time horizon, possible loss, and what would disprove your thesis.
- Check execution: Confirm account eligibility, fees, spreads, order type, and settlement terms.
- Decide or defer: Proceed only if the evidence and personal fit are clear; otherwise keep researching or leave the security alone.
This process cannot establish that any particular stock is suitable without current company information and your personal financial context. It is designed to prevent a mention from bypassing the checks you would use for any other investment.
