Compare automobile stocks by mapping what each company sells, who buys it, where it operates, and which businesses sit beside vehicle manufacturing. Then reconcile fiscal periods and accounting definitions before comparing revenue, margins, cash flow, investment, volume, mix, risk, and valuation. A truck-heavy manufacturer, a battery-EV specialist, a luxury brand, and a company with a large captive finance arm can all report “automotive” results that are economically different.
What an automobile-stock comparison is really measuring
An automobile stock is a claim on a business model, not just on a number of vehicles sold. Two companies can deliver similar unit volumes while having very different exposure to pricing, incentives, financing income, software, energy products, warranty costs, or commercial fleets.

A useful comparison answers four questions in order:
- What products and customers drive the business? Passenger cars, pickups, SUVs, commercial vehicles, luxury models, hybrids, and battery-electric vehicles have different pricing, cost, and demand patterns.
- How does the company earn money around those products? Financing, leasing, used vehicles, parts and service, charging, insurance, subscriptions, energy storage, and regulatory credits can materially change revenue quality and margins.
- Are the reported figures comparable? Segment labels, fiscal years, currencies, margin definitions, and unusual items differ by company.
- What price is the market assigning to those earnings and assets? Valuation requires same-date market data and consistent treatment of debt, cash, finance subsidiaries, and share classes.
The result should be a decision framework, not a league table based on one sales number or one price-to-earnings ratio.

Step 1: Define a defensible peer set
Start by stating the geography, industry role, and time period. A global vehicle manufacturer, a pure-play EV company, a luxury specialist, an auto retailer, and a component supplier should not be treated as interchangeable peers.
Choose companies with a comparable economic role
- Manufacturers: Compare vehicle categories, regions, powertrains, distribution systems, and adjacent operations.
- Luxury specialists: Examine pricing power, customer concentration, limited production, and brand investment rather than only unit growth.
- Commercial-vehicle specialists: Focus on fleet demand, uptime services, financing, and utilization-sensitive customers.
- Auto retailers: Analyze dealership gross profit, used vehicles, parts and service, and inventory turns. Do not compare their margins directly with a manufacturer’s plant economics.
State whether your peer set is global or regional and whether the comparison uses calendar years or each company’s fiscal year. If a company reports in a different currency, choose a reporting currency for the table and disclose the conversion method; otherwise leave currencies separate.
Separate operating peers from context companies
You may include a retailer or finance subsidiary to explain a business-model feature, but label it as context. AutoNation’s 2025 annual report, for example, said parts and service were 17% of its revenue but 48% of its gross profit for the year ended December 31, 2025. AutoNation is a dealership group, not a vehicle manufacturer, so that statistic illustrates profit mix rather than an automaker benchmark.

Build a one-page operating map before opening the income statement. Record each company’s exposure to the following categories:
- Passenger cars
- Pickups and SUVs
- Commercial vans, trucks, and buses
- Luxury or premium vehicles
- Hybrids and plug-in hybrids
- Battery-electric vehicles
- Retail, fleet, government, rental, and other commercial channels
- Dealer distribution, direct sales, or a mixture
Product mix affects average transaction prices, incentives, warranty claims, factory utilization, and the amount of capital tied up in tooling and inventory. Customer mix affects payment terms, credit losses, fleet discounts, residual values, and sensitivity to economic cycles.
Use the company’s own segment map, but do not assume industry-wide definitions
Ford’s 2025 Form 10-K describes four company-defined segments: Ford Blue, Ford Model e, Ford Pro, and Ford Credit. Ford Blue primarily covers internal-combustion and hybrid vehicles, parts, accessories, and digital services for retail customers. Ford Model e primarily covers battery-electric vehicles and associated software and digital activities. Ford Pro centers on commercial customers. These labels describe Ford’s management structure; they are not universal categories that can be matched one-for-one with another manufacturer’s segments.
Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K states: “We operate as two reportable segments: (i) automotive and (ii) energy generation and storage.” Its automotive segment includes vehicle sales and leasing, regulatory credits, and services and other activities such as used-vehicle sales, maintenance, charging, insurance, parts, and merchandise. A company’s “automotive” line can therefore include much more than new-vehicle deliveries.
Toyota’s Form 20-F describes automotive and financial-services businesses. Its financial-services operations primarily provide financing to dealers and customers for purchasing or leasing Toyota vehicles. That financing connection can make Toyota’s consolidated revenue, assets, debt, and earnings behave differently from those of a manufacturer without a comparable captive lender.

General Motors’ 2024 annual report describes GM Financial and investments in electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, software-enabled services, and subscriptions. Treat those initiatives as disclosed business activity or investment unless the filing reports a mature, separately profitable segment. A strategic goal is not the same thing as recurring segment earnings.
Step 3: Draw the business-model map
For every company, classify each material activity as a reportable segment, a line inside another segment, or a strategy discussed without separate financial results. This prevents you from adding an unproven software or energy narrative to a valuation model.
| Business activity | Questions to answer | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| New-vehicle sales | Which models, powertrains, regions, and channels generate volume and revenue? | Mix drives pricing, incentives, warranty exposure, and factory utilization. |
| Vehicle financing and leasing | Is it a captive finance subsidiary? Are receivables, interest income, provisions, and debt reported separately? | Finance revenue and finance debt can make consolidated margins and leverage unlike those of a manufacturer. |
| Used vehicles | Are used sales and gains included in automotive, retail, or another segment? | Used-car prices and inventory turns follow a different cycle from new-car production. |
| Parts and service | Is the activity a manufacturer operation, a dealer network, or both? | Aftermarket revenue can be steadier and more profitable than new-vehicle sales. |
| Energy generation and storage | Is energy reported separately, and what products and contracts are included? | Revenue, gross margin, capital needs, and customers may have little relationship to vehicle sales. |
| Software, subscriptions, charging, and insurance | Are results reported, bundled into automotive, or only described as future opportunities? | Recurring-revenue claims require evidence of recognized revenue, retention, costs, and cash collection. |
| Regulatory credits | Are credit sales disclosed, and how large are they relative to automotive profit? | Credit revenue may not grow with vehicle volume and can be sensitive to regulation and competitors’ production. |
Mark the boundary on your worksheet. Tesla’s inclusion of services and other items inside automotive, alongside a separately reported energy segment, is not directly equivalent to Ford’s four-segment structure, Toyota’s automotive and financial-services presentation, or GM’s disclosures.
Step 4: Normalize fiscal periods and accounting definitions
Never place annual figures in one table without labeling the fiscal year and period end. GM’s cited source is a 2024 annual report, while the Ford and Tesla examples are from 2025 filings. Toyota’s Form 20-F may use a fiscal period that does not align with calendar-year reporters. A year-over-year comparison can be misleading if one company has already reported a later operating environment.
Build a definition sheet before calculating ratios
For each metric, record the exact numerator, denominator, currency, fiscal period, and whether it is a GAAP, IFRS, company-adjusted, or analyst-created measure. Examples include:
Operating margin = operating income / revenue. Confirm whether the company includes finance operations or unusual items in each figure.Free cash flow = operating cash flow − capital expenditure. State whether capitalized software, finance receivables, or other investments are included.Net debt = interest-bearing debt − cash and cash equivalents. Decide separately how to treat captive-finance debt and restricted cash.Revenue per vehicle = vehicle revenue / reported deliveries. Verify that the revenue line and delivery count cover the same products, geography, and period.
Do not silently substitute an adjusted margin for a reported margin. If a company excludes restructuring, warranty, recall, launch, or impairment costs, show both the reported measure and the adjustment when the item is material.
Explain unusual items next to the trend
Annotate years affected by restructuring, warranty charges, recalls, incentives, regulatory credits, commodity movements, plant closures, or other one-time items. A margin improvement caused by a temporary credit is not equivalent to improvement from lower unit costs or stronger pricing.

| Measure | What to collect | Interpretation and caution |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | Total and segment revenue by fiscal year | Separate currency effects, acquisitions, finance revenue, and changes in segment scope. |
| Gross profit and gross margin | Company-reported totals and segments | Check what each segment includes; Tesla reports automotive and energy gross profit separately, while other companies may combine activities. |
| Operating income and margin | Reported and, if supplied, adjusted measures | Record restructuring, recall, warranty, impairment, and launch costs. |
| Operating cash flow | Cash generated by operations | Working-capital swings, finance receivables, and customer deposits can distort a single year. |
| Capital expenditure | Plants, tooling, batteries, software, charging, and other investment | High spending may support growth or reflect costly underutilized capacity; compare with production plans and cash generation. |
| Debt and liquidity | Corporate debt, finance debt, cash, revolvers, and maturities | Captive lenders often borrow to fund receivables; consolidated leverage is not automatically comparable. |
| Production and deliveries | Units by model, powertrain, region, and channel where available | Define whether the number is produced, wholesaled, delivered, or registered. |
| Mix | Cars versus trucks/SUVs, retail versus fleet, ICE/hybrid versus EV | Mix often explains margin changes better than total volume. |
Keep company-reported segment numbers separate from your own calculations. If you calculate a margin, show the formula and identify the source figures. Do not compare a segment gross margin that includes services with a vehicle-only gross margin.
How to read volume, revenue, and profit together
A sales leader is not necessarily a profit leader. Revenue can rise because of higher prices, a favorable model mix, finance income, or acquisitions even when unit volume is flat. Conversely, volume can grow while profit falls if incentives increase or a company sells more low-margin fleet vehicles.
Use a mix bridge
For each year, explain changes in this order:
- Unit volume: Did production, wholesale, or deliveries rise or fall?
- Price and incentives: Did transaction prices increase, or did discounts absorb the gain?
- Product mix: Did trucks, SUVs, luxury models, hybrids, EVs, or commercial vehicles become a larger share?
- Geography and currency: Did exchange rates or regional demand change reported results?
- Adjacency: Did financing, services, energy, software, or credit sales contribute more or less?
- Cost: What happened to materials, batteries, labor, logistics, warranty, and capacity utilization?
AutoNation’s 2025 figures provide a useful illustration of why revenue share is not profit share: parts and service represented 17% of revenue but 48% of gross profit. Because AutoNation is a retailer, not a manufacturer, use the example to test your thinking about mix rather than to estimate an automaker’s margin.

Leased vehicles, wholesale transfers, fleet sales, and vehicles delivered through different channels can carry different recognition timing and residual-value risk. Confirm the filing’s definition before treating a delivery count as a direct measure of consumer demand.
Use Tesla’s disclosed figures without creating a false peer table
Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K reported $82.056 billion of automotive revenue and $12.771 billion of energy-generation-and-storage revenue. It reported gross profit of $13.292 billion for automotive and $3.802 billion for energy generation and storage. These are company-reported 2025 segment amounts in U.S. dollars.
Those numbers are useful for showing how to read a filing, not for declaring Tesla more or less profitable than another automaker. Tesla’s automotive segment includes vehicle leasing, regulatory credits, used vehicles, maintenance, charging, insurance, parts, and merchandise, while energy is reported separately. Another manufacturer’s automotive line may include financing, services, or different activities. Before calculating a cross-company margin, replicate each filing’s scope or restrict the comparison to a common, clearly defined subset.
Step 6: Compare cash demands and balance-sheet exposure
Automobile manufacturing is capital intensive, but the type and timing of investment differ. Examine spending on new platforms, battery plants, factories, tooling, software, charging infrastructure, autonomous systems, and capacity expansion. Then ask whether operating cash flow covers that investment through a cycle.

Captive finance requires a separate lens
A finance subsidiary can produce interest income and support vehicle sales while also creating credit, residual-value, funding, and liquidity risk. Review finance receivables, provisions for credit losses, delinquency trends, lease residual assumptions, funding sources, and debt maturities separately from industrial operations. Do not label a company “highly levered” solely because a captive lender borrows to fund customer loans; instead, show industrial debt and finance debt distinctly and explain the treatment.

Check cash conversion
Compare operating cash flow with reported profit over several years. Investigate large gaps caused by inventory, accounts payable, customer deposits, finance receivables, or lease activity. A year with strong cash flow may reflect a temporary release of working capital, while a year with weak cash flow may coincide with a deliberate launch investment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: Tie risks to each company’s mix
Read the risk factors and management discussion alongside your operating map. The same macroeconomic event can affect companies differently.
- Affordability and interest rates: Consumer payments, lease rates, and dealer financing can weaken demand when borrowing costs rise.
- Credit losses and residual values: Captive finance and leasing operations add exposure beyond vehicle manufacturing.
- Commodity and battery costs: Metals, cells, energy, and logistics can change margins before prices adjust.
- Capacity utilization: New plants and platforms require sufficient volume to absorb fixed costs.
- Labor and supply chains: Strikes, wage changes, shortages, and supplier failures can interrupt production.
- Warranty and recalls: A launch or quality problem can reverse an otherwise strong margin trend.
- Regulation and trade policy: Emissions rules, tariffs, credits, and local-content requirements can affect product economics and market access.
- Foreign exchange: A company producing in one currency and selling in another can report results that move independently of local demand.
- Technology execution: EV platforms, autonomous systems, software subscriptions, and charging networks require investment before their economics are proven.
Tie each risk to an observable exposure. For example, a company with a large commercial segment may be more sensitive to fleet replacement cycles, while a company with significant finance receivables must be evaluated for both vehicle demand and borrower performance.

Step 8: Keep valuation separate from business quality
A strong operating business can be an expensive stock, and a troubled business can look cheap on a backward-looking multiple. Obtain market prices, diluted share counts, debt, cash, minority interests, and finance-subsidiary information as of one explicit date.
Define the valuation inputs
- Market capitalization: Share price multiplied by the appropriate diluted share count, with share classes handled consistently.
- Enterprise value: Define whether you add all debt, subtract unrestricted cash, and adjust for finance subsidiaries, pension obligations, leases, or minority interests.
- Earnings denominator: Use trailing or forward earnings with a stated period and explain whether it is GAAP, IFRS, or adjusted.
- Cash-flow denominator: Distinguish industrial free cash flow from consolidated cash flow that includes finance receivables.
- Asset measures: Consider tangible book value or sum-of-the-parts analysis only when segment assets and liabilities are disclosed well enough to support it.
Use more than one measure when earnings are cyclical or segment accounting differs. The filings and figures described here do not establish a same-date cross-company valuation ranking, so no current “cheapest” or “most expensive” conclusion should be inferred without a separate market-data set.
A repeatable automobile-stock comparison worksheet
Use one row per company and one column per question. Leave a cell as “not stated” when the filing does not disclose a comparable value; do not estimate silently.
- Identity: Company, ticker, headquarters, fiscal-year end, reporting currency, and industry role.
- Products: Cars, trucks/SUVs, commercial vehicles, luxury, hybrids, EVs, and major model launches.
- Customers: Retail, fleet, government, rental, commercial, and geographic concentration.
- Distribution: Dealer, direct, online, wholesale, and leasing channels.
- Adjacencies: Finance, leasing, used vehicles, parts and service, charging, insurance, software, energy, and regulatory credits.
- Segments: Exact reportable-segment names and what each contains.
- Financials: Three to five years of revenue, gross or operating profit, margin, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, debt, liquidity, production, and deliveries.
- Adjustments: Restructuring, recalls, warranty, incentives, impairments, credits, currency effects, and acquisitions.
- Risks: The exposure most likely to change your earnings view over the chosen horizon.
- Valuation: Same-date market capitalization, enterprise value definition, earnings measure, cash-flow measure, and share-class treatment.

Mixing fiscal years
Fix: Label every number with its fiscal period and avoid presenting unsynchronized years as a single peer snapshot.
Counting strategy as revenue
Fix: Require recognized revenue, segment costs, cash flow, and disclosure before assigning value to software, autonomous driving, charging, or energy ambitions.
Combining finance debt with industrial debt without explanation
Fix: Show captive-finance assets and liabilities separately and describe your enterprise-value treatment.
Comparing a retailer with a manufacturer
Fix: Use retailer data, such as AutoNation’s parts-and-service mix, only to illustrate channel economics and clearly identify the different business model.
Quoting a valuation multiple without a date
Fix: State the market-data date, share count, currency, debt and cash adjustments, and earnings period. A multiple without those definitions is not reproducible.
Optional research tools, used correctly
Screeners and research platforms can help collect historical financials, valuation fields, filings, and peer lists. Use them to identify questions and maintain a consistent dataset, then verify material figures in the company’s latest filing. A platform’s rating, screen, or estimate is not a substitute for reading segment definitions, accounting notes, risk factors, and cash-flow disclosures.
Final decision framework
After completing the worksheet, write a short investment case for each company using the same headings: economic engine, evidence of profitability, cash and capital needs, balance-sheet and finance exposure, principal risks, and valuation at the chosen date. Then identify which differences are structural and which are temporary.
