A near-Earth asteroid is a plausible mining target only if a mission can reach and work it, the desired material is present in a useful and recoverable form, and the material can be delivered to a real destination at a competitive cost. Being close to Earth or rich in a promising element is not enough: accessibility, resource evidence, surface operations, customers and economics must all align.
What does “viable” mean for asteroid mining?
Viability is a chain of tests, not a single measurement. A candidate must be reachable by the intended mission, contain material that can be extracted with the proposed technology, and offer a reason to deliver that material somewhere. A scientific finding that an asteroid contains metal or water establishes neither a mineable deposit nor a profitable business.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Is the resource there? Composition estimates describe what may be present, with uncertainty that depends on how the asteroid has been observed.
- Can it be recovered and delivered? Terrain, gravity, anchoring, processing, transport and storage shape the mission design.
- Is there a valuable use at the destination? The material needs a customer or mission use, and its delivered cost must compare favorably with alternatives.
The NASA sources cited here document exploration goals and scientific evidence; they do not establish a profitable commercial asteroid mine, a buyer, or a validated commercial cost model.

How should you screen a candidate?
Use the following checks together. A strong result on one axis cannot compensate automatically for a failure on another.
| Screening factor | What to establish | What the evidence does not prove by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Orbital accessibility | Whether the orbit and mission profile permit a practical outbound trip, rendezvous, operations and—if needed—return or delivery. | “Near-Earth” does not mean easy or inexpensive to reach. |
| Resource confidence and grade | What observations measure, how indirect they are, and whether in-situ data or samples support the estimate. | A composition estimate is not an assay of accessible, mineable reserves. |
| Use and destination | Who would use the material, where it would be used, and what function it serves there. | A potentially useful substance does not establish demand or a committed buyer. |
| Surface and extraction | Terrain, boulders, material cohesion, gravity, anchoring, thermal conditions and compatibility with a specific extraction method. | A favorable remote image does not guarantee safe or workable contact operations. |
| Delivery economics | The costs and risks of prospecting, extraction, processing, transport and storage, compared with supplying the destination another way. | Resource abundance alone does not show that delivered material can compete. |
| Evidence maturity | Whether the evidence comes from a flyby, remote observations, rendezvous, mapping, contact, sample return or repeatable extraction. | Interest or a mission selection is not the same as demonstrated mining capability. |
Start with the mission, not a distance label
Orbital accessibility depends on the actual mission: a sample-return spacecraft, a prospecting mission and an operation intended to deliver cargo have different requirements. “Near-Earth asteroid” describes an orbit relative to Earth; it is not a universal measure of transfer difficulty, mission duration or cost.
NASA’s 2016 OSIRIS-REx press kit explains that accessible sample-return targets have an Earth-like, fairly circular orbit and low inclination. Bennu’s orbit ranges from 0.9 to 1.4 astronomical units (AU), and its inclination differs from Earth’s by 6 degrees. These are Bennu-specific details used to explain the selection of a scientific sample-return target, not commercial mining cutoffs. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx press kit

Grade the resource claim by how it was measured
Remote sensing can identify clues about composition, but it does not necessarily establish quantity, purity, distribution or recoverability. In-situ measurements improve the picture; returned samples allow laboratory analysis of the collected material. Even a sample, however, represents the material collected—not automatically the composition of an entire asteroid or the size of an economically recoverable deposit.
For example, NASA estimates that metal makes up 30% to 60% of Psyche’s volume based on indirect observations, including radar and optical data, density and thermal inertia. NASA also notes contradictions in the data and variation across Psyche’s surface. That is an estimate of volume fraction, not metal purity or proven mineable reserves. NASA’s Psyche science overview
Match material to a destination and customer
A resource has commercial relevance only in relation to a use. Water, for instance, could be useful for in-space needs, but its value depends on whether it can be extracted, processed and delivered where it is needed—and on the cost of supplying that destination from elsewhere. In a NASA podcast, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator Dante Lauretta said, “the commodity that we feel is the most viable right now from an economic perspective is kind of surprising, but it’s actually water.” This is his team’s assessment in that interview, not proof of a market or a profitable water-mining business. What Bennu and Psyche show—and what they do not
Bennu: accessible for a sample mission, but difficult terrain
Bennu helps illustrate why orbit and operations must be evaluated separately. Its orbital properties supported selection for OSIRIS-REx, which returned 121.6 grams of material to Earth on September 24, 2023. The returned sample enables direct study of the collected material, but it is not a reserve estimate for the whole asteroid. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx FAQ
Operations also revealed a surface that was more rugged and boulder-covered than earlier Earth-based observations had suggested, leaving fewer smooth areas than expected. That experience is a practical warning for prospecting: surface hazards and material handling belong in the assessment, even when a target is scientifically compelling and reachable. NASA’s March 17, 2026 report on Bennu’s surface
Psyche: a composition question, not a near-Earth mining candidate
Psyche is a main-belt asteroid, not a near-Earth asteroid, so it is useful here as an example of composition uncertainty—not as a candidate on a near-Earth shortlist. NASA describes it as likely a mixture of rock and metal and gives the 30% to 60% metal estimate as a fraction of volume, based on indirect evidence that contains contradictions. The mission is intended to study Psyche scientifically, not mine it. NASA/JPL’s Psyche science material

When is there enough evidence to call an asteroid a mining target?
It is useful to label the claim at the level the evidence supports. A flyby or remote observation can make a target worth investigating; rendezvous and mapping can improve knowledge of its shape, terrain and composition; contact and sample return can test conditions or materials at selected locations. None of those steps alone demonstrates repeatable extraction, delivery or commercial returns.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchBefore describing an asteroid as a viable mining target, look for a connected case that establishes:
- a feasible mission profile for the specific orbit and intended operation;
- credible evidence for the resource, including its distribution and uncertainty;
- a workable way to access, extract, process and handle that material on the surface;
- a destination with a real use for the output; and
- a cost and risk case that compares delivery with the alternatives.
If any link is missing, describe the asteroid more narrowly—for example, as an accessible exploration target or a candidate with a resource of interest. That is more accurate than treating scientific promise as commercial viability.
