Embedded finance is the delivery of a financial service inside a primarily non-financial product or workflow. A payment at online checkout, a loan offered while buying an appliance, or insurance presented during flight booking are examples: the customer can use a relevant service without leaving the experience where the need arises.

What embedded finance means

The European Banking Authority defines embedded finance as “the integration of financial services into primarily non-financial platforms” in its report, Navigating the Path to Embedded Finance. The defining feature is the context: a financial service appears within a product or workflow whose main purpose is not financial.

That makes embedded finance broader than payment processing. It can encompass payments, lending, insurance and investment management. The service is presented where it may be useful, while a financial firm or specialist provider may supply the underlying product and regulated functions.

Examples in everyday products

  • At online checkout: an installment loan or payment option is offered while a customer buys an expensive item.
  • While booking travel: insurance is offered during flight booking.
  • In merchant software: a shop-management platform provides merchants with access to an account or payment services.
  • In a mobility service: a car-sharing company offers drivers a debit card.

These examples rely on partnerships between the platform and financial-service providers. APIs or other secure data-exchange methods commonly connect the parts of the service.

How payment platforms make it work

A payment platform can put a payment feature into the point in its own workflow where the customer needs it, then connect that experience to providers, banks and payment networks. The platform may coordinate the customer-facing steps and technology, but its branding does not establish which company supplies the account, processes a payment, holds funds or carries regulatory responsibility.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision describes technology and platform providers that use APIs or other secure methods to connect fintechs, embedded-finance businesses and banks. Depending on the arrangement, services can include payments, deposits, lending, identity checks, card issuance and investments. A particular platform need not perform every operational or regulated role itself.

What happens when a card payment is made?

Norges Bank’s description of the Norwegian BankAxept system shows the stages behind a card payment. A terminal sends an authorization request to a central processor, which checks and forwards it to the cardholder’s issuing bank. The bank approves or declines the transaction, and the response travels back through the processor to the terminal. Clearing and settlement happen afterward through payment infrastructure and participating banks.

In the BankAxept flow Norges Bank describes, the authorization response normally takes less than half a second. That timing applies to this system; it should not be assumed for every card network or payment rail. Authorization is also not the same as clearing and settlement: it is the decision that comes first.

How open banking can support payments

Open banking is one way a platform can connect to a customer’s bank account to initiate a payment or retrieve account information. Under the PSD2 framework as explained by Deutsche Bundesbank for Germany, a payment-initiation provider can submit a credit-transfer order to the customer’s bank on the customer’s behalf after receiving consent. An account-information provider can retrieve and organize balances and transaction data.

In Germany, the Bundesbank says payment-initiation providers need a licence and account-information providers need registration with supervisory authorities; strong customer authentication applies. These details are a Germany-specific example. The permissions, authorization requirements and implementation depend on the jurisdiction and applicable rules.

Who provides the service—and what protects your money?

A familiar retailer or app may present the service, but the legal provider could be a bank, an electronic-money institution, a payment institution or another firm. Before using an account or payment service, identify the legal entity behind it, what it is authorized to do, and which protections apply. The rules are not identical across countries or provider types.

For UK consumers, the Financial Conduct Authority says non-bank payment-service providers, including electronic-money institutions (EMIs) and payment institutions, must be authorized or registered. It advises customers to check the operator’s legal name and permissions. The FCA also says funds held with non-bank payment providers are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

  • Handle real-world demands — Resist everyday spills, dust, and wear with a durable, IP54-rated design.
  • Stay reliable through every rush — Maintain strong connectivity and consistent performance through your busiest hours.

Some UK non-bank providers must safeguard customer funds: this applies to EMIs and authorized payment institutions, but not to small payment institutions. Safeguarding is not the same as deposit insurance. The FCA says customers should receive most of their money if a firm fails, but repayment can take time and may not cover the full amount.

Questions to ask before relying on an embedded service

  • Who is the legal provider? Look beyond the platform’s brand to the entity named in the terms and account details.
  • Who holds or safeguards funds? Check whether the provider is a bank or non-bank firm and what protection applies in your country.
  • What does consent permit? For account access or payment initiation, understand which data or transaction permissions you are granting and how they can be withdrawn.
  • Who handles problems? Find out where to report unauthorized payments, fraud, service errors or complaints.
  • What happens during an outage? A platform, bank, processor or other partner may be involved; check how disruptions affect access, payments and support.
  • Which regulator’s rules apply? Protections and authorization standards depend on where the service is offered and the type of provider.

How common is branded financial infrastructure?

In a press release published 14 October 2025, the EBA reported that 35% of banks responding to its 2025 Spring Risk Assessment Questionnaire used white labelling. The EBA describes white labelling as a financial institution partnering with another firm—which may be non-financial—to offer products and services under the partner’s brand. This is a result for survey respondents and a related branded-partnership model; it is not the share of all banks or a direct measure of embedded-finance transactions.

How to assess an embedded-finance offer

When comparing services, focus on the arrangement rather than the seamlessness of the interface. Consider what financial service is offered, where it appears in the customer journey, which firms provide and regulate it, what data or permissions it needs, and how it protects customers and handles service interruptions. Those details reveal more than the platform’s branding alone.
