What the supply-chain figures say—and what they measure
The clearest evidence for a Pro-heavy mix is Counterpoint Research’s global panel-procurement tracker. Its October 2024 update put the iPhone 16 Pro models at 66% of cumulative panel procurement through October, compared with a 60% Pro share for the comparable iPhone 15 period in 2023. Panel procurement is an upstream supply indicator, not a count of completed phones sold to customers.

The percentages describe different things: the 66% and 60% figures concern panel procurement mix, while the roughly 70% figure concerns the reported coverage of planned production by one component order. None is a verified share of iPhone 16 customers buying a Pro model.
Does that mean Apple planned to make 66% of iPhone 16s Pro models?
No. The 66% figure is a share of cumulative panel procurement through October, not a published production target. Procurement can signal how suppliers are preparing for demand, but it is not equivalent to finished-device production, shipments to retailers, or sell-through to customers. Apple did not disclose model-level production or sales figures in its cited announcement.

The roughly 70% component-order estimate also needs a narrow reading: iMore reported that an order for a Pro-exclusive component covered about 70% of planned iPhone 16 production. The underlying supplier source and methodology were not fully public, and one component order does not establish the final model mix.
Can Apple favor Pro models while the whole iPhone 16 line is smaller?
Yes. Counterpoint’s November 2024 update projected total cumulative panel procurement for the iPhone 16 series through November to be 1% below the iPhone 15 series over the comparable period. A higher Pro share of one input can coexist with lower projected procurement across the lineup: the mix can shift toward higher-end models even as the overall volume estimate softens.

Separate figures from KGI Securities were forecasts, not Apple disclosures. In a May 7, 2024 supply-chain report, KGI forecast premium models would account for more than 60% of sales weighting, attributing the expected shift to anticipated Pro upgrades. On September 13, 2024, KGI estimated 85–90 million iPhone 16-series component shipments in the second half of 2024 and forecast 225 million iPhone shipments for full-year 2024, down 2% year over year. These estimates use different measures and periods from Counterpoint’s panel-procurement tracker, so they should not be combined as if they were one sales tally.

Apple announced several Pro-specific features on September 9, 2024: a 48-megapixel Fusion camera, 4K120 Dolby Vision video recording, a titanium design, and a 5x Telephoto camera on both iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Apple also said the iPhone 16 Pro Max offered the best battery life ever on an iPhone at launch. Those are meaningful reasons some buyers might choose a Pro model, but they do not prove what customers ultimately bought.

KGI’s May forecast connected its expected premium-model weighting to planned Pro upgrades including periscope lenses, a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and Wi-Fi 7. Those were elements of an analyst forecast; they are not, by themselves, confirmation of realized demand or a measured sales mix.

The reports are useful as evidence of supply-chain expectations at the time, not as a verdict on which iPhone 16 model is better value. A Pro-heavy procurement mix does not make the Pro the right purchase for every person, and it does not establish that Pro sales exceeded regular iPhone 16 sales.

Because the iPhone 16 reports and forecasts discussed here date from 2024, they should be read as a snapshot of launch-period expectations, not a current measure of production or sales.
