Each has a different rollout and pickup process, and the announcements do not establish whether any option costs customers more or less than ordinary courier delivery.
Where Uber Eats autonomous delivery stands
The service is not a nationwide replacement for human couriers. Uber Eats launched deliveries by Waymo vehicles in parts of Tempe, Mesa and Chandler in the Phoenix area on April 3, 2024. Uber’s current restaurant guidance also describes sidewalk-robot deliveries in select cities. Drone service is being introduced through partnerships, but the announced deployments are staged and market-specific.

For customers, the practical test is the checkout screen: Uber says the app displays “Autonomous vehicles may deliver your order” when an autonomous vehicle is an option. If that notice does not appear, the order is not being offered that way. For a Waymo delivery, customers can opt out at checkout and request a courier.

What happens when a sidewalk robot delivers an order
- The restaurant receives the order. A matched robot order appears on the restaurant’s Uber Eats Orders tablet, and staff prepare and pack the food as they normally would.
- The robot arrives at pickup. The tablet alerts staff. Uber’s restaurant guide says the robot waits up to 10 minutes at the pickup point.
- Staff load and secure the food. They unlock the robot automatically or with a PIN, place the order in its insulated compartment, and close the lid. The compartment locks before the robot departs.
- The customer collects the order. Uber Eats sends a notification, and the customer uses the app to unlock the compartment.
Uber describes these robots as fully electric and equipped with sensors to detect obstacles. The company says it has completed hundreds of thousands of robot deliveries across more than 10 cities with partners including Avride, Cartken, Coco and Serve. Those are Uber’s descriptions and operating figures, not an independent audit of safety, reliability or environmental performance.
What the partnerships announce—and what remains unsettled
Waymo: service already launched in part of the Phoenix area
Uber and Waymo began offering autonomous deliveries in selected parts of Tempe, Mesa and Chandler on April 3, 2024. The customer-facing notice and opt-out apply to the Waymo delivery described in Uber’s launch information; they should not be assumed to describe every robot or future drone handoff.

Avride: a multiyear sidewalk-robot partnership
Uber announced its Avride partnership on October 3, 2024. The plan called for sidewalk robots to launch in Austin, then expand to Dallas and Jersey City, with Avride planning hundreds of robots on Uber Eats in 2025. The announcement describes a plan, not confirmation that each proposed city or fleet target was reached.
Flytrex: drone pilots were expected by the end of 2025
On September 18, 2025, Uber announced its first drone-delivery investment through Flytrex and said Uber Eats pilot markets were expected by the end of 2025. Flytrex reported more than 200,000 deliveries across the United States and said it operated to FAA-certified safety standards. These are statements in Flytrex’s partnership release; they do not establish that Uber Eats drone service is available at a particular location today.

Zipline: deployments announced for later in 2026
Uber and Zipline announced on August 17, 2026, that their first Uber Eats drone deployments were planned for later in 2026, with expansion across existing Zipline markets. Their stated target is one million drone deliveries per day by the end of 2029. Zipline’s announcement also cites more than 135 million autonomous miles; that company-reported figure is not a measure of Uber Eats deliveries.
Uber’s broader autonomous-delivery infrastructure
Uber announced Autonomous Solutions on February 23, 2026, describing services for partners that include demand, support, regulatory assistance, fleet financing, mission control and remote assistance. The announcement signals an effort to help commercialize autonomous fleets; it does not by itself add a new customer-facing delivery market.

What this means for your order and your budget
These announcements describe delivery methods and rollout plans, not a customer price schedule. They do not establish whether autonomous delivery changes delivery fees, service fees, tips, minimum orders or the restaurant’s prices. Check the total shown in the app before placing an order rather than assuming a robot or drone makes delivery cheaper—or more expensive.

Uber says the Waymo option can be declined in favor of a courier.

- For sidewalk robots, expect a customer-side unlock through the Uber Eats app; for Waymo, take your phone to the vehicle to unlock and retrieve the food.
Safety, speed and environmental claims need context
Autonomous vehicles may offer a different way to move food, but the material available from Uber and its partners does not provide an independent, like-for-like study comparing delivery costs, emissions, crash rates, food condition or reliability against human couriers. Uber’s robot speed and delivery totals, and Flytrex’s delivery count, are company-reported figures. Zipline’s announced long-term volume is a target, not a current Uber Eats operating rate.
That distinction matters when judging claims about lower costs, faster delivery or sustainability: a rollout announcement or company operating figure does not prove that an individual order will arrive sooner, cost less, or have a lower environmental impact.
