Walmart’s $79 HP Chromebook was a real early-Black-Friday offer reported on November 8, 2022—not a current deal. It was a very cheap option for browsing and schoolwork, but it cannot run Grand Theft Auto V locally. In 2026, consider a similar old 4GB/32GB model only for basic use, at a low price and after checking its exact model, condition, and ChromeOS support.
What was the $79 Walmart deal?
Deal coverage identified the offer as an HP Chromebook 11-family device with an AMD A4 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and ChromeOS. It was reported at $79, reduced from about $98, during Walmart’s early Black Friday promotions in November 2022. TechRadar’s deal report and Tom’s Guide’s coverage describe the promotion and configuration.
Coverage described the screen as roughly 11.3 to 11.6 inches, so the precise measurement is not consistent across reports. The exact retail model number is not established by those reports. “HP Chromebook 11” spans multiple configurations; a listing with that family name alone does not confirm the processor, memory, storage, or support status. Treat the $79 price as historical, not an offer Walmart still guarantees.
What those specifications mean in everyday use
The AMD A4, 4GB RAM, and 32GB storage point to a basic Chromebook, not a general-purpose Windows laptop. ChromeOS is designed around browser-based work, so the machine could suit modest everyday tasks:

Four gigabytes of RAM can feel restrictive when many tabs, a video call, and apps are open together. The 32GB advertised capacity is also shared by ChromeOS, updates, downloaded files, cached data, and any Android or Linux apps. It is not 32GB available for games and personal files. Large offline media collections, demanding creative applications, heavy multitasking, and sizeable software installations are poor fits.
Can the HP Chromebook run GTA V?
No—not as a local installation. Rockstar lists Windows as the supported operating system for both PC editions, and the Chromebook runs ChromeOS. It also falls short on storage and graphics requirements. The 4GB RAM figure happens to match the Legacy edition’s minimum numerically, but that isolated match does not make the game compatible.

Rockstar’s official PC requirements specify those minimums. The Chromebook’s storage is far below either edition’s listed requirement, and the configuration is not the dedicated graphics hardware Rockstar names. This conclusion follows from the published specifications; it is not a claim that the exact Walmart unit was benchmarked.

Would Steam, Linux, or developer mode make it work?
No practical local workaround is supported by the published requirements. Google’s Steam for Chromebook guidance sets a hardware floor of an Intel Core i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, 8GB RAM, and 128GB storage, in addition to a supported Chromebook model. The AMD A4 deal configuration falls below each of those stated thresholds.
Google directs eligible users to its Chromebook Steam installer rather than treating a Play Store Steam app as a shortcut, and it notes limitations, bugs, performance issues, and restrictions on which titles are available. Enabling Linux or developer mode does not supply the missing storage, memory, graphics capability, or Windows support. Those steps should not be treated as a credible way to install and play GTA V on this machine.
Could cloud gaming let it access GTA V?
Possibly, but only if a cloud-gaming provider supports the game and the user’s region, account, and edition at the time of play. In that arrangement, a remote computer runs the game and streams video to the Chromebook; the HP itself is not running the PC game. The experience also depends on a stable internet connection with low latency, browser and ChromeOS compatibility, and any required controller support.

Do not buy this Chromebook on the assumption that a particular service currently offers GTA V. Game catalogs and licensing can change, and availability must be checked with the provider before purchase. Streaming is also a poor fit for unreliable broadband, restrictive data caps, or offline use.

For a buyer who needed a new, inexpensive device for basic web work, school tasks, or streaming, $79 was an unusually low reported price for this configuration. TechRadar called it the lowest price it had seen for that particular HP Chromebook; that is an editorial observation about this product, not proof it was the cheapest Chromebook on the market. Live Science also reported strong sales activity, but sales volume does not establish performance or suitability.
The deal made sense only if the buyer accepted its modest speed, small storage capacity, and ChromeOS-only workflow. It was a cheap basic computer, not a cheap gaming computer. It was a poor purchase for anyone whose main reason was GTA V, Windows desktop applications, demanding creative work, or a long service life for heavy workloads.

Is an old HP Chromebook 11 worth buying in 2026?
Possibly as a low-cost secondary or school device, but the 2022 price is no longer a useful benchmark by itself. Walmart’s Chromebook listings include restored and pre-owned devices, including older HP models at lower prices; marketplace listings vary by seller, condition, warranty, and availability. Check the current listings rather than assuming an old deal is still available. A refurbished $50 machine is not directly comparable with a new $79 unit: battery wear, missing accessories, returns, and support life all matter.
Before buying any older Chromebook, check the exact model number and Google’s current Auto Update Expiration date for that model. HP Chromebook 11 variants do not all share one support deadline. Confirm the battery condition, charger, return terms, and that an education device is not still managed or locked by a school or organization. A low sticker price is not a bargain if the device cannot be updated or returned when it arrives with a fault.
- Consider it if it is genuinely inexpensive, its condition and support horizon are clear, and the intended work is mostly browser-based.
- Skip it if its model or condition is vague, it is near the price of a newer 8GB machine, or you need local Windows software, demanding multitasking, or offline storage.
What to buy instead for gaming or a longer useful life
For a better basic Chromebook
Look for a newer model with 8GB RAM, at least 64GB storage (128GB is preferable), a more capable processor, and a verified ChromeOS support horizon. Meeting Google’s Steam-for-Chromebook hardware floor can make some Chromebook gaming options available, but it does not establish that GTA V will run on a Chromebook; Rockstar’s PC requirements remain the relevant check for local play.

Choose a Windows gaming-capable laptop or desktop that meets Rockstar’s requirements for the edition you intend to play, with adequate graphics hardware and more usable storage. A retailer’s “gaming” label alone is not enough to establish compatibility. A console is another option if you prefer not to buy a PC. For cloud play, verify the current provider catalog and regional availability before spending money on hardware.
Bottom line: the November 2022 $79 HP Chromebook deal was a reasonable entry-level buy for simple browsing and schoolwork. It cannot run GTA V locally. In 2026, buy an older 4GB/32GB model only when its price, condition, return protection, and remaining updates make sense for basic use—not as a gaming system.
