Twitter’s Creator Ads Revenue Sharing Program launched in July 2023, but it is not a new 2026 announcement. X now calls the service Creator Revenue Sharing. The launch-era model linked payouts to advertising around replies to a creator’s posts; the current program uses a broader, unpublished calculation involving verified Home Timeline impressions, audience type and content format. It can provide supplemental income, but X guarantees neither acceptance nor a particular payout.
What launched in 2023?
On February 3, 2023, Elon Musk said Twitter would share advertising revenue from ads appearing in creator reply threads (TechCrunch). Twitter reported its first creator payments on July 13 and described an initial $5 million payout pool calculated cumulatively from February onward (TechCrunch).
The launch was also a retention and competition tactic. High-profile creators supplied the posts and conversations that drove usage, while the July 2023 arrival of Threads increased pressure to keep them on Twitter. Contemporary coverage described the policy as an effort to expand access and encourage more activity (TechCrunch).

The July 13 and July 28 requirements were different stages or contemporaneous versions of the rollout. They should not be treated as one unchanged rule.

How the original advertising model worked
The launch-era explanation was narrower than ordinary post monetization. A creator’s post generated a conversation, ads appeared in or around replies, and Twitter attempted to associate that advertising activity with the creator. The payout therefore was not a simple payment for every impression of the creator’s post, and ads in the general Home timeline were not initially presented as the direct basis for payment.
Twitter did not publish a universal CPM or a fixed percentage that let creators calculate earnings from impressions alone. TechCrunch reported creator claims ranging from several thousand dollars to more than $24,000, but those were individual, self-reported figures rather than an audited rate table (TechCrunch).

General monetization standards also require creators to be at least 18, have an account active for at least three months, maintain a complete profile and verified email address, enable two-factor authentication, remain in good standing and not be designated as a state-affiliated media account (X Creator Monetization Standards).

Meeting the numbers does not guarantee admission. X says it may accept, reject, suspend or revoke participation at its discretion (X Creator Revenue Sharing).
How current payouts are calculated
X now says earnings are influenced by verified Home Timeline impressions, who views the content (including the possible weighting of Premium+ viewers), content format, and meaningful interactions or conversation. It does not publish a transparent formula or guaranteed amount per million impressions.

That makes total post impressions a poor forecasting tool. Organic reach, the proportion of verified viewers, conversation quality, format and policy compliance can all affect the result. A viral screenshot from another creator is evidence of what may be possible for that account, not a typical return.
Application and payment steps
- Open X’s monetization settings and check whether the account is shown as eligible.
- Apply if the eligibility screen permits it; do not assume that a Premium subscription alone activates the program.
- Connect a Stripe payout account when prompted.
- Complete Stripe’s identity verification and any required payment or tax onboarding.
- Continue meeting the standards while participating; eligibility can be withdrawn later.
X says payments are processed every two weeks, the current minimum payout is $30, and payments run through Stripe (X Creator Revenue Sharing). The $10 withdrawal minimum reported during the August 2023 rule change belonged to an earlier version of the program.
Rules, exclusions and suspension risk
Creators must follow the X User Agreement, Rules and Creator Monetization Standards. Prohibited or monetization-risk conduct includes hateful or harassing material, violent or harmful content, illegal activity, manipulated engagement, misleading or abusive monetization, copyright violations and conduct that violates local law (X Creator Monetization Standards).

One specific current rule is date-sensitive: effective March 3, 2026, X says posting an AI-generated video of an armed conflict without an AI disclosure can trigger a 90-day suspension from Creator Revenue Sharing; later violations can result in permanent suspension from further payments (X Creator Revenue Sharing). This is not a blanket ban on all AI content.
X may withhold or affect payments for suspected invalid activity, chargebacks or other disputed activity under the program terms, and the terms allow it to modify or terminate participation (program terms). If X suspends an account, its Help page directs the creator to review the standards and submit an appeal.

X says it does not take a revenue share from Creator Subscriptions, although payment-processing, app-store, refund and chargeback deductions may apply; creators can receive up to approximately 97% of gross subscription revenue under the stated conditions (X Creator Subscriptions). Buying Premium does not create subscription income and does not guarantee admission to Revenue Sharing.

Is paying for X Premium financially sensible?
In the United States, X’s web pricing checked in August 2026 starts at $3 per month or $32 per year for Basic, $8 per month or $84 per year for Premium, and $40 per month or $395 per year for Premium+. Prices vary by country, taxes and purchase platform (X Premium FAQ).
Use a break-even test rather than assuming the subscription is an investment:
- Can the account reliably exceed 5 million organic impressions in a rolling three-month period?
- Are enough followers verified, and is the creator’s country and Stripe setup supported?
- Would the creator buy Premium’s other features even if Revenue Sharing paid nothing?
- Can the creator absorb an opaque formula, changing thresholds and possible suspension?
- Would recurring fan payments be more useful than variable advertising-linked income?
If Premium is purchased solely for a hoped-for payout, the cost may be wasted because acceptance and earnings are discretionary.
Alternatives for creator income
- X Creator Subscriptions: Best for a loyal X audience willing to pay monthly.
- Patreon: A dedicated membership and digital-product hub; new creator pages published after August 4, 2025 generally face Patreon’s standard 10% platform fee, plus processing and applicable taxes (Patreon).
- YouTube: Suited to video-first creators; YouTube says eligible Shorts creators receive 45% of revenue allocated to them from the Shorts Creator Pool (YouTube Partner Program).
- Sponsorships, newsletters and direct products: These can diversify income but require selling, delivery and audience ownership outside X.
Stripe is payment infrastructure, not an additional monetization program; access depends on both X’s supported countries and Stripe’s identity and payout requirements.
What creators should expect
The program is real, but it has changed names, thresholds and calculation language since 2023. Treat it as variable supplemental income. Build forecasts from your own verified, organic audience data, subtract Premium and operating costs, and keep a second revenue source—such as subscriptions, memberships, sponsorships or products—rather than treating X’s calculation as a salary.
