Yes, an AI shopping assistant can help reduce what you pay on Amazon.in and Flipkart—but it cannot prove that a deal is genuine or that a price is the lowest. The useful part is the research: defining requirements, finding comparable models, checking price history, and listing eligible offers. The saving becomes real only at checkout, after verifying the exact variant, seller, delivery charges and payment conditions.
Amazon’s shopping assistant launched in India as Rufus and Amazon says it was renamed Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026. It is available through the Amazon Shopping experience, although labels and features can vary by account, product, country and rollout. Amazon has not established in the supplied research that Flipkart offers an equivalent, broadly available native assistant.

What I counted as a saving
“Discount” and “saving” are not the same thing. A product advertised as 70% off may simply be compared with an unhelpful MRP. Cashback may arrive later, a bank offer may require a particular card, and a low listing price may be cancelled out by delivery or platform fees.

Verified saving = stated baseline price − effective final priceThe baseline must be explicit. It could be the lowest price found manually before using AI, the price of the product I originally intended to buy, or the median price observed during the test. MRP should not be used casually as the baseline.
How the experiment should be run
Prices, stock and promotions change quickly, so every result needs a timestamp and delivery location. A reproducible test should:
- Choose 10 to 15 products before searching for deals.
- Write down the required features and a hard maximum budget.
- Ask the assistant for candidates without naming a preferred marketplace.
- Record the exact model number, storage, size, colour, generation or pack quantity.
- Find that exact product on Amazon.in and Flipkart.
- Record the seller, warranty, fulfilment, delivery date and return or replacement terms.
- Apply only offers for which the shopper genuinely qualifies.
- Capture the listing and checkout totals at the same time.
- Recheck volatile products after 24 to 72 hours.
- Report failed recommendations as well as successful ones, using the median and total savings rather than only the biggest win.
A sensible sample includes one standard branded product, one category with competing equivalent models, one inexpensive item where shipping matters, and one expensive product where bank or exchange offers materially change the total. Suitable categories include earbuds, power banks, keyboards, kitchen appliances, monitors, smartphones, storage devices and personal-care appliances.

For a new purchase, I would use a prompt like this:

Include delivery charges, coupons, bank offers, cashback conditions, warranty, seller, return policy and final checkout price. Do not treat MRP as savings. Mark anything you cannot verify as unknown.For a product already under consideration:
Check whether this is a good time to buy this exact product. Show available price history if accessible. Compare the final payable price on Amazon.in and Flipkart. Do not compare different variants, generations, pack sizes or sellers without identifying the difference.Require the assistant to produce a structured table and to label gaps as not verified:

What Amazon’s assistant can do
Amazon describes Rufus—and, following the announced rename, Alexa for Shopping—as a tool that can answer product questions, compare products and make recommendations. Amazon says it uses its catalogue and information from across the web, including listing information, reviews and community questions. Its India launch announcement is available on Amazon India’s site.
Amazon also describes shopping features such as budget-based searches, deal discovery, price tracking and alerts. Its price-history guidance says customers may see 30-, 90- and 365-day views, with the 365-day feature described for the United States, United Kingdom and India. The exact view available can depend on the account, product, app, country and current rollout; check the feature in your own account rather than assuming it is universal. Where the real money can be saved
1. Avoiding an unnecessary upgrade
The assistant may reveal that a cheaper model meets every stated requirement. This is often a more credible saving than claiming a large discount against MRP.
2. Finding an equivalent product
AI can narrow a large catalogue, but equivalence must be checked manually. A 128 GB phone is not equivalent to a 256 GB phone; a single pack is not equivalent to a multipack; and an older generation should not be compared with a newer one without explaining the trade-off.
3. Separating offer types
Ask for each saving separately:
- Product discount
- Instant bank discount
- Coupon
- Cashback and when it is received
- Exchange value and eligibility
- Membership-only price
- No-cost EMI benefit
- Minimum order value and maximum discount cap
Do not add all advertised benefits together unless every condition applies to the actual order. Amazon’s sale material lists multiple conditional promotions, including Prime and payment offers; these are not universal savings.

Price history is useful context, not proof of value. Ask whether the history covers the exact variant, seller and location, and whether coupons or delivery charges are included. A brief flash-sale low may be irrelevant if the item is unavailable or the current checkout total is higher.

Amazon versus Flipkart: compare the purchase, not just the number
For each marketplace, compare the same:
- Model number, configuration and pack size
- Seller or authorised-seller status
- Manufacturer warranty
- Included accessories
- Delivery date for the buyer’s pin code
- Return, replacement and open-box conditions
- Payment method and offer eligibility
- Final checkout total
A lower Flipkart headline price may lose after delivery charges or an ineligible card offer. A higher Amazon listing may become cheaper after a valid coupon. Seller quality, warranty handling, exchange valuation and customer-service policies can also make the apparently cheaper order the riskier one.

A credible comparison should show enough information for another shopper to audit it:

For every successful result, show the arithmetic. For example:
Displayed product price: ₹8,499
Eligible bank discount: −₹500
Coupon: −₹300
Delivery fee: +₹40
Final checkout price: ₹7,739
Baseline verified price: ₹8,499
Actual saving: ₹760Do not count theoretical cashback unless its conditions are clear and the amount is realistically recoverable. If the buyer would not have purchased the product without the assistant, describe the result as a lower-cost option or avoided overspending—not automatically as cash saved.

How the assistant can be wrong
- Hallucinated facts: It may invent a feature, coupon, warranty, seller detail or price-history interpretation.
- Variant mismatch: It may compare different storage, colours, generations, voltage standards, pack sizes or conditions.
- Stale prices: A conversational answer may be out of date during a sale.
- Incomplete totals: It may omit delivery, installation, membership, platform fees or required accessories.
- Overconfident quality claims: A polished explanation is not evidence that a product is authentic, durable or worth buying.
- Unavailable offers: A coupon may expire, stock may change, or the deal may require a card, exchange or minimum order.
Open the retailer’s page for every material claim. The checkout page is the final authority.
When AI is worth using
Use it as a research and checklist assistant when requirements are complicated, several models are comparable, or the purchase is expensive enough to justify checking price history and seller terms. It is particularly useful for turning vague needs into specifications and identifying cheaper options that still meet them.
Manual checking is usually better when the item is urgent, the product has many variants, authenticity or warranty is critical, or the assistant cannot access current live prices. For a routine low-cost purchase, the time and privacy cost of an additional tool may exceed any likely saving.

Do not paste passwords, one-time passwords, payment details, saved addresses or private invoices into a general AI tool. Treat account-connected assistants carefully, especially if they can access browsing history, orders or payment settings.
Automatic purchasing may be convenient, but it creates avoidable risks: a changed price, wrong variant, expired coupon, default address or default payment method. Amazon describes target-price and automatic-purchase features under stated conditions, but availability and controls should be verified in the reader’s own account. Manual approval is the safer default for expensive purchases.
What platform claims do—and do not—prove
Amazon reports usage, conversion and savings figures for its shopping tools. Those are company-reported measurements, not independent evidence that every shopper saves money. For example, a higher likelihood of purchase measures conversion behaviour, not the shopper’s final price. Likewise, an average saving reported for an auto-buy feature cannot be generalised to all products or users. Treat such figures as claims from Amazon’s own description, not as a test result.
Third-party services such as ShopCompare present cross-store comparison and AI-assisted recommendations. They can be a starting point, but the supplied evidence does not independently establish their price accuracy, freshness, privacy practices, affiliate relationships or complete retailer coverage. Verify every result on Amazon.in or Flipkart.
