Black Friday 2025 has ended. The strongest iPhone offers available on Friday, November 28, 2025, were mostly carrier promotions—not unconditional discounts on unlocked phones. The headline iPhone 16 price reportedly reached $0.01 through Amazon and Boost Mobile, while Boost reportedly offered the iPhone 15 for about $349 and Best Buy offered the iPhone 14 Plus for about $529 after activation. Apple’s own promotion emphasized an Apple Gift Card reportedly worth up to $75 rather than a comparable instant markdown.
The right deal depended on more than the advertised phone price. Buyers had to account for activation, port-in or trade-in requirements, plan costs, bill-credit periods, device locking, condition, warranty and return policies.

In practical terms, the iPhone 16 was the best long-term choice when its price was close to the iPhone 15, while the iPhone 15 or 14 made sense only when the discount was large enough to compensate for older hardware and a shorter expected support runway.

Why the $0.01 iPhone 16 was not really a $0.01 unlocked phone
The Amazon and Boost Mobile promotion was attractive because the device price was dramatically below normal retail pricing. But the phone price was only one part of the transaction. A carrier promotion may require a new line, a port-in from another carrier, a particular plan, credit approval, activation fees, taxes, trade-in eligibility or continued service for a specified period.
Some carrier offers use monthly bill credits. In that arrangement, the customer may receive credits over 24, 36 or another stated number of months. Leaving early, paying off the device, changing plans or failing to meet another condition can end the credits and leave the customer responsible for the remaining balance.
Use this calculation before calling any carrier phone “free”:
Real cost = phone payments + required plan premium + activation fees + taxes − trade-in credits − promotional credits.
The required plan premium is especially important. If the promotion requires a more expensive plan than the buyer’s current plan, the extra service cost can exceed the apparent phone savings.

Carrier deals versus unlocked deals
Carrier promotions
Carrier offers were generally the source of the biggest Black Friday 2025 headlines. They were most suitable for new customers, switchers and existing customers who already intended to remain on a qualifying plan. They were less suitable for people who might switch carriers, travel extensively, resell the phone soon or simply wanted a one-time purchase.
Check all of the following:
- Whether the offer required a new line, upgrade or port-in.
- Whether an eligible trade-in was required.
- The number of months of bill credits.
- Whether taxes, activation and upgrade fees were separate.
- Whether the phone was locked initially and when it could be unlocked.
- What happens to credits if service is canceled or the device is paid off early.
- Whether the advertised price applied only to a top-condition, recent, high-storage trade-in.
Unlocked purchases
An unlocked iPhone was usually the better financial fit for buyers who wanted to keep their current carrier, might change providers, travel internationally or avoid bill-credit commitments. It also made resale simpler.
Do not treat every listing marked “unlocked” as equivalent. Distinguish among:
- Factory-unlocked: sold without a carrier restriction.
- Carrier-unlocked: originally restricted but unlocked after meeting the carrier’s rules.
- Marketplace “unlocked” inventory: a listing whose provenance, warranty and network status require additional checking.
Best Buy’s deal pages included a mixture of unlocked, refurbished and activation-based inventory, so each listing needed to be reviewed separately. Was the iPhone 16 the best buy?
Usually, yes—if the price difference from the iPhone 15 was modest and the buyer planned to keep the phone for several years. The iPhone 16 offered newer-generation hardware, a newer camera system with Camera Control, a longer expected software-support runway and better resale prospects than older models. Compatible iPhone 16 models also supported Apple Intelligence where Apple’s software and regional requirements allowed it.

The standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 were not generally eligible for Apple Intelligence according to 2025 coverage. That distinction mattered more than a small price difference for buyers who wanted Apple’s newer AI features. It is important not to confuse the standard iPhone 15 with the iPhone 15 Pro line when checking compatibility.

The iPhone 15 could still be the better value when it was meaningfully cheaper, especially for buyers who wanted USB-C and a 48MP main camera but did not need Apple Intelligence. The iPhone 14 was harder to justify new unless deeply discounted, because it used Lightning, had older hardware and offered the shortest expected support runway of the three generations.

Apple’s iPhone buying page is useful for checking current specifications and purchase options, but current availability and pricing do not prove what was offered during Black Friday 2025.
Best deals by model and buyer
iPhone 16
The reported $0.01 Boost Mobile offer was the most dramatic headline deal, but only for buyers comfortable with its carrier requirements. Apple’s reported gift-card promotion was more flexible in the sense that it came through Apple, although the full value required a future use for Apple products or services.
iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16e
The iPhone 16 Plus was relevant for buyers who wanted a larger display and battery-oriented design without moving to a Pro model. The iPhone 16e was worth considering only where its lower price outweighed any feature differences and the specific promotion was clearly documented. Neither model should be assumed to have shared the exact terms of an iPhone 16 deal.

iPhone 15 and 15 Plus
The iPhone 15 was a sensible purchase when it was substantially cheaper than the iPhone 16, was unlocked or came with a favorable carrier arrangement, and the buyer did not need Apple Intelligence. Its USB-C connector made it more convenient than the iPhone 14 for people already using USB-C accessories.
The iPhone 15 Plus could be a good large-screen compromise, but the same checks applied: compare its actual price, storage and condition rather than assuming that the standard iPhone 15 promotion applied to the Plus model.
iPhone 14 and 14 Plus
Buy the iPhone 14 only when the price was clearly below comparable iPhone 15 inventory and the buyer accepted Lightning, older hardware and no Apple Intelligence. A professionally refurbished model with disclosed battery health and a dependable warranty could be more rational than a new iPhone 14 tied to an expensive plan.
The iPhone 14 Plus was the most compelling older model for shoppers who valued screen size. The reported Best Buy price of about $529 after activation was not an unconditional unlocked price, so the required carrier service had to be included in the comparison.

Apple generally competed through trade-in credit, financing, carrier activation, setup assistance and support rather than the deepest unconditional iPhone markdowns. Macworld reported that Apple’s Black Friday 2025 promotion included an Apple Gift Card worth up to $75 with the iPhone 16.

A Gift Card is not the same as money taken off the phone at checkout. It has its greatest practical value for someone already planning to buy Apple accessories, services or another Apple product. Buyers who wanted the lowest cash price had to compare the gift-card offer with a retailer’s direct discount and with the value of any trade-in.
Apple’s current buying framework includes carrier offers, trade-in credit and monthly financing. Those current options can be reviewed at Apple’s iPhone buying page, but they should not be substituted for the historical 2025 promotion.
How retailers differed
Amazon and Boost Mobile
Amazon hosted the reported Boost Mobile iPhone 16 promotion at $0.01. Its appeal was the exceptionally low device price; its drawback was the required Boost service. It was a poor fit for someone seeking an unlocked phone or planning to retain another carrier.

Best Buy was useful for comparing activation deals, unlocked inventory, refurbished devices and accessories. The reported iPhone 14 Plus price of about $529 required activation. The retailer’s pages also mixed product conditions and carrier statuses, so the listing—not the retailer name—determined what the buyer was actually getting.
Walmart
Walmart offered a broad mix of carrier-financed phones, pre-owned devices, refurbished phones and marketplace listings. One restored, fully unlocked iPhone 14 listing was reported at roughly $264, but marketplace purchases required careful review of the seller, refurbisher, grading standard, warranty, return policy and battery-health guarantee.
Target
Target was one of the major retailers shoppers monitored, particularly where store-card or loyalty benefits could complement a promotion. A percentage discount should not be assumed to apply universally to iPhones; exclusions and activation rules mattered.
Costco and Sam’s Club
Warehouse clubs could add member-only pricing, gift cards, accessory bundles or return and warranty benefits. The trade-offs were membership costs, limited inventory and potentially narrower activation choices. A 2025 comparison spreadsheet listed iPhone products at Costco and Walmart, but secondary comparison sheets were best treated as leads rather than definitive proof of every term.
Should you buy an iPhone 14 or 15?
- Choose the iPhone 14 only at a deep discount, with reliable warranty coverage and disclosed battery health if refurbished or used. It is a poor fit if USB-C or Apple Intelligence matters.
- Choose the iPhone 15 when it is meaningfully cheaper than the iPhone 16, you want USB-C and the 48MP main camera, and you can live without Apple Intelligence on the standard model.
- Choose the iPhone 16 when the price gap is modest, you plan to keep it for years, newer features matter or the carrier promotion does not force an unsuitable plan.
How to evaluate a “free” iPhone
- Write down the device price and storage capacity.
- Identify whether the promotion is an instant discount, monthly bill credits or a trade-in reimbursement.
- Record the required plan and compare it with the plan you would otherwise use.
- Multiply any additional monthly plan cost by the required service period.
- Add activation, upgrade, taxes and financing costs.
- Subtract only trade-in and promotional credits you are realistically eligible to receive.
- Check the lock period and what happens if you cancel, switch plans or leave the carrier early.
For a short-term owner or someone who may move to another carrier, a straightforward unlocked discount can be worth more than a lower monthly payment that depends on years of service.
