There is no single best crypto wallet for every job. For long-term holdings, start with a hardware signer such as Ledger or Trezor; for Ethereum and dApps, consider MetaMask; for mobile multi-chain access, Trust Wallet is a strong fit. Coinbase Wallet’s former page now redirects to Base App, so readers revisiting a 2025 shortlist should treat that as a product transition, not an unchanged wallet. This is a retrospective comparison: product features and availability can change, and the linked official pages are the place to confirm current details.
First, distinguish a wallet from an exchange account
A self-custody wallet gives you control of the recovery phrase and the keys that authorize transactions. An exchange account is custodial: the platform controls the keys, and withdrawals depend on its policies and availability. Neither arrangement removes risk; self-custody shifts more responsibility for backup, security and mistakes to you.
A hot wallet uses keys through an internet-connected phone, browser or computer. A hardware wallet keeps signing authority on a dedicated device and confirms transactions there. Ledger Wallet and Trezor Suite are software interfaces; Ledger and Trezor devices are signers. MetaMask and Trust Wallet are software wallets, and MetaMask can connect to compatible hardware signers. Many users can separate savings from activity by keeping long-term funds on hardware and using a small hot-wallet balance for dApps.
Security has two parts: protecting the keys, and checking what a transaction will do before approving it. A hardware signer can reduce some remote key-theft risks, but it cannot make a malicious contract safe or undo a transaction you authorize.

How to compare these five wallets
These are use-case recommendations, not an objective security ranking. Before choosing, check who controls the keys, how a transaction is confirmed, whether your exact asset and network are supported on your device and platform, and what recovery requires. Also compare dApp compatibility, fees, staking terms, privacy, support and regional availability. Asset-count claims are not interchangeable: an asset may be natively supported, visible only, manually imported, or managed through a third-party interface.
Ledger: best hardware-anchored option for broad multi-chain use
Ledger is a fit for people who want a hardware signer alongside an app for managing assets and accessing services. Ledger describes Ledger Wallet as self-custody software anchored to Ledger hardware and, in its comparison page, claims support for more than 15,000 assets across more than 50 networks, plus staking, swaps, bridging, dApps and NFTs. These are vendor-reported figures and features, not an independent safety rating; see Ledger’s wallet-app comparison.
Ledger’s supported-assets page notes that some assets may be managed through compatible third-party wallets and that compatibility can change. Verify support for the exact asset, network and app you plan to use. A third-party interface adds another piece to verify: install it from its official source and review transaction details on the signer before confirming.

The app itself is not a substitute for buying and securing a hardware device. Hardware adds cost and backup, firmware and replacement considerations; swaps, staking and other integrated services may involve separate providers, fees, geographic limits or protocol risks. Find current device models and prices at Ledger’s official shop.
Trezor Safe 3 or Safe 5: best for open-source-oriented hardware
Trezor’s Safe 3 is a straightforward hardware-wallet option for people who value on-device confirmation and an open-source design. Trezor lists a certified EAL6+ Secure Element, PIN and passphrase protection, on-device confirmation and Trezor Suite management on its Safe 3 product page. The Safe 5 product page covers the more premium model; compare current specifications and price directly rather than assuming features or availability.
Hardware signing makes routine use less convenient than a phone wallet, and some assets may require third-party interfaces. Open-source design is valuable for transparency, but it does not prevent phishing or eliminate every component risk. A passphrase can add protection, but it is also an additional secret: if you lose it, the corresponding account may not be recoverable from the seed alone.

MetaMask: best for Ethereum, EVM networks and dApps
MetaMask is a self-custody wallet available as a browser extension and mobile app, with access to supported networks and Web3 applications. Features and network availability can differ between Extension and Mobile, so check the platform you will use. MetaMask says that a standard wallet’s Secret Recovery Phrase is its only recovery method and that the company cannot recover it if lost; it also says recovery information and private keys are encrypted locally. Its FAQ explains these responsibilities.
MetaMask supports hardware-wallet connections, including Ledger and Trezor on Extension, though mobile integrations vary; see its hardware-wallet guidance. That combination can be useful for dApp activity with larger balances, but hardware confirmation does not certify a contract or website as safe.

MetaMask Swaps currently lists a 0.875% MetaMask fee, in addition to network fees and quote-related costs; check the live quote and terms before trading. Details are in the Swaps guide. Security alerts are enabled by default in Extension and Mobile according to MetaMask’s security-alert documentation, but alerts are not a guarantee against scams. Token approvals can let a dApp spend tokens within the approved allowance; inspect the permission and site before signing, as explained in MetaMask’s safety guidance.

MetaMask also offers optional Transaction Shield, which is distinct from standard wallet protection and is not protection against exposed recovery phrases, compromised keys, market losses or protocol exploits. Check the current price, coverage and limitations in its Transaction Shield documentation. Download only from MetaMask’s official download page.
Trust Wallet: best mobile-first multi-chain wallet
Trust Wallet describes itself as a free self-custody wallet with mobile apps and a browser extension, more than 100 blockchains, swaps, staking, NFTs and dApp access; its site also advertises millions of assets and optional encrypted cloud backup. These are vendor claims, and broad coverage does not mean every token is natively supported or safe. Confirm the precise network and asset support before sending funds on Trust Wallet’s official site.
Mobile convenience is useful for everyday access, but a phone can be compromised, lost or socially engineered. Optional cloud backup is a convenience feature, not the same thing as offline hardware storage. Staking and earn availability, costs and terms depend on the asset, provider and region; treat campaigns in the Trust Wallet blog as time-sensitive promotions, not permanent wallet benefits.

Coinbase Wallet and Base App: a name change readers should not overlook
The former Coinbase Wallet page at coinbase.com/wallet currently redirects to Base App, which presents itself as a web and mobile trading and earning product. That transition means a 2025 reference to Coinbase Wallet should not be silently treated as a description of the current Base App.
Also distinguish a self-custody wallet from a Coinbase exchange account: similar branding does not mean the same custody arrangement. Check the current product’s custody model, supported networks, purchase and withdrawal terms, fees and regional availability before using it. Base-oriented access may be a natural fit for Coinbase users focused on that ecosystem, but is not automatically the right choice for activity centered on Bitcoin, Solana, Cosmos or other networks.
Which wallet fits your use?
| Your priority | Starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term holdings | Ledger or Trezor hardware signer | Exact asset support, recovery process and device model |
| Bitcoin-focused storage | A hardware wallet with confirmed Bitcoin support | That the device and chosen interface can manage the intended Bitcoin account |
| Ethereum and EVM dApps | MetaMask, with hardware signing for larger balances | Network, extension/mobile feature differences and contract permissions |
| Mobile multi-chain access | Trust Wallet | Native support for the specific asset and the relevant service terms |
| Coinbase or Base ecosystem | Current Base App experience | Current custody model, supported assets, fees and local availability |
| Frequent trading or experimentation | A small-balance hot wallet, separate from savings | That funds exposed to dApps are limited to what you can afford to risk |
| Staking | Compare the wallet interface and asset-specific staking provider | Variable rewards, fees, lockups, validator and smart-contract risks, and regional eligibility |
Ethereum.org’s wallet comparison tool separates capabilities such as custom RPC and gas-fee controls. Use feature-level checks like these rather than choosing from a headline asset count alone.
What “earning rewards” really means
A wallet is usually an access point, not the source of a guaranteed return. Native staking helps secure a proof-of-stake network; rewards vary, and unbonding periods, validator commissions, slashing and network inflation may matter. Liquid staking adds smart-contract, liquidity and depeg risks. Lending or other earn products are not staking and may add borrower, counterparty, rehypothecation or insolvency risk. Trading campaigns and card cashback depend on separate, potentially temporary terms and may be geographically limited or have tax consequences. Compare the underlying product, fees, lockups and risks—not just the wallet brand or advertised rate.
Quick Recap
Set up and use a wallet more safely
- Get the genuine software or device. Start at the vendor’s official domain or verified app-store listing. For hardware, check the manufacturer’s purchase guidance and avoid links sent by strangers.
- Create a new wallet and secure its recovery phrase. Write it down offline. Do not photograph it, email it, upload it or enter a hardware-wallet phrase into a website or ordinary computer. Anyone with the phrase can generally control the funds.
- Protect the device and accounts. Use a strong device passcode and available app protections. Keep separate accounts for savings and dApp activity, and do not store more in a hot wallet than you need.
- Test recovery and transfers with small amounts. Confirm the receiving address and network, then make a small test deposit and withdrawal before moving a larger balance. Keep backups in secure, separated locations and make inheritance instructions without casually exposing the phrase.
- Inspect each signing request. Check the domain, destination, amount, network and requested token permissions. Avoid unknown links and fake support; a wallet cannot reverse a transaction simply because it was a scam.
When something goes wrong
- Lost phone or computer: Restore with the recovery phrase using genuine software, then verify receiving addresses. If the device may be compromised, create a new wallet on a clean device and move funds.
- Lost hardware device: Restore using the recovery phrase on a compatible replacement from an authorized source. If the phrase may have been copied, treat the wallet as compromised and move assets to a newly generated wallet. A passphrase-protected account may require that passphrase as well as the seed.
- Exposed recovery phrase: Assume the wallet is compromised. Create a new wallet on a clean device and move funds promptly; revoke relevant approvals where possible, but do not rely on revocation alone. Never send assets or your phrase to someone claiming to be support.
- Wrong network or missing token: Identify the actual blockchain and address type, then check whether the wallet or a compatible interface can manage it. Do not share the phrase with a recovery service, and use a small test transfer when moving assets.
- Failed swap: Check the transaction on the relevant block explorer to see whether it failed, whether an approval was made and whether the source asset remains. A failed swap can still consume network gas; fees fluctuate with network activity. MetaMask discusses failed swaps and fees in its FAQ and Swaps guide.
