T-Mobile Is Retiring Select Legacy Plans: Who Pays More, How Much, and What to Do

By TheFinanceBase Team 8 min read

Yes—but not every T-Mobile customer will see a higher bill. T-Mobile is retiring selected legacy rate-plan configurations and automatically moving affected customers to newer plans. Depending on the account and line type, the recurring service charge may stay the same or rise by up to $6 per phone or home-internet line per month and up to $3 per connected-device line, such as a tablet or smartwatch.

T-Mobile began notifying affected customers on June 29, 2026. Migrations were scheduled to begin as early as July 13, with billing changes appearing on different statements depending on each account’s billing cycle. Your personal notice and account comparison—not a general list of plan names—are the best evidence of what will happen to your bill.

The short version

  • T-Mobile is retiring certain older billing-plan configurations rather than announcing a universal rate increase.
  • Affected customers may be moved automatically to a newer, sometimes account-specific plan.
  • Some bills will not change. Others may increase by up to $6 per phone or home-internet line or up to $3 per connected-device line.
  • Plan names, discounts, free lines, taxes, perks, and price-protection terms can all affect the final result.
  • Before voluntarily changing plans or switching carriers, document the old and new plan details and check which protections apply.

What T-Mobile is changing

The core event is a forced retirement and migration of selected legacy plans. T-Mobile says some older configurations originated in the 3G or early-4G era and are being replaced with updated plans intended to support newer network and service features. The company says affected customers will retain their current benefits while receiving service improvements, but the practical meaning of “benefits” must be checked at the account level.

The replacement may have the same recurring price, a higher recurring price, or different included features. It may also use a name that is not offered as a normal, customer-selectable plan on T-Mobile’s public plan page. Reported replacement names include categories such as Experience Signature, Experience Select, and Experience Value Signature, but there is no verified universal migration map.

For its contractual position, T-Mobile’s terms say it may change a service, product, or rate plan with at least 14 days’ notice when the change materially adversely affects the customer. Continued use or payment after the effective date constitutes acceptance under those terms. That is T-Mobile’s stated contract position, not a definitive legal ruling about every customer’s circumstances. See the T-Mobile terms and conditions.

Who may be affected?

Reports identify some plans in the following families as potentially included:

  • Older Simple Choice plans
  • T-Mobile ONE and ONE Plus plans
  • Some older Magenta-family plans
  • Grandfathered Sprint-era plans retained after the merger
  • Certain older T-Mobile Home Internet plans
  • Some tablet, smartwatch, hotspot, and other connected-device lines

This is not a complete list, and being on one of these plan families does not prove that your account is included. T-Mobile has not published a complete public list of affected plan codes. Customers with similar plan names may receive different outcomes because of line structure, discounts, tax treatment, and legacy features.

How much could your bill increase?

Line type Maximum increase described in notices
Phone or voice line Up to $6 per line per month
Home-internet line Up to $6 per line per month
Connected device, such as a tablet or watch Up to $3 per line per month

These are maximum figures, not automatic increases. Some customers may pay the same amount after migration. The actual change can also be affected by a discontinued credit, altered free-line treatment, changed taxes, or a promotional discount ending at the same time.

For example:

  • Four affected phone lines at the maximum would mean up to $24 more per month before taxes and fees.
  • One affected phone line plus one affected tablet line could mean up to $9 more per month before taxes and fees.

Reports of larger total increases should not automatically be treated as T-Mobile’s standard migration charge. A larger bill may include lost credits, device installments, taxes, add-ons, or changes to the line structure.

What could change besides the price?

The most important comparison is not simply the old plan name versus the new plan name. Review each of these items:

  • Home Internet: Compare the service tier, equipment, pricing, and any address-specific terms.

T-Mobile has said that customers affected by the retirement of Kickback retain other perks included with their plans. That statement does not establish that every historical credit or add-on survives unchanged, so verify the specific account.

When did the migration take effect?

  • June 29, 2026: T-Mobile began notifying certain customers.
  • July 13, 2026: The date cited in customer notices for the beginning of the transition.
  • July 2026 statements: Some customers could see the first billing effect.
  • August 2026 and later: Other customers may see the change later because billing cycles differ.

Use the effective date in your own notice. A July 13 migration date does not mean every customer will see a new charge on the same calendar date or on the same statement.

How to audit your T-Mobile account

  1. Find the notice. Search SMS, email, direct mail, and the T-Mobile account portal. T-Mobile says customers with price changes were notified by text or, if texting failed, by email or direct mail.
  2. Write down both plan names and codes. Record the former plan and the assigned replacement.
  3. Compare recurring service charges. Do not rely only on the total bill, which may include device payments, insurance, taxes, and add-ons.
  4. Check the effective date. Identify the first statement that should reflect the change.
  5. Review every line. Include free, discounted, tablet, watch, hotspot, and home-internet lines.
  6. Separate taxes and fees. Price protections generally do not cover these charges.
  7. Check credits. Look for autopay, free-line, military, senior, employer, Kickback, and promotional credits.
  8. Compare benefits. Review hotspot, international service, streaming, network treatment, and upgrade eligibility.
  9. Save evidence. Keep screenshots or PDFs of the notice, old plan details, new plan details, and statements.
  10. Request a written explanation. Ask T-Mobile to identify every changed charge and benefit before you make a voluntary plan change.

You can review account-specific information through T-Mobile’s Manage Plan page. Labels and available details may vary by account.

Which price protection applies?

“Price Lock” is not one universal guarantee. Eligibility depends on when the account was activated or switched, the plan involved, and the terms attached to that account.

Protection Potentially qualifying period What it generally does
5-Year Price Guarantee Eligible Experience plans activated or switched beginning April 23, 2025 Protects the monthly price of talk, text, and T-Mobile 5G data for five years, subject to exclusions. Some 2026 transitions may qualify.
Last Month Price Lock Eligible accounts activated or switched January 18, 2024 through April 22, 2025 If T-Mobile raises the price and the customer leaves, T-Mobile may cover the final month’s recurring service charges when requested within 60 days.
Original Price Lock Eligible accounts activated April 28, 2022 through January 17, 2024 Provides a separate form of protection with its own terms and exclusions.
Un-contract Promise Qualifying accounts activated before April 28, 2022 May cover the final month’s recurring service charge after a qualifying price increase and cancellation, if properly requested within 60 days.

Read T-Mobile’s current Price Lock FAQ for the applicable dates and exclusions. The protections generally exclude taxes, fees, per-use charges, add-ons, third-party services, discounts, and some other charges. A guarantee may provide a cancellation benefit rather than an absolute promise that no plan configuration can ever change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a forced migration automatically qualifies for a five-year guarantee. Confirm the exact replacement plan and the date the guarantee began. Also be careful with voluntary changes: T-Mobile says switching to another plan can cause the loss of a price promotion tied to the old plan.

Should you stay, call, or switch?

Staying may make sense when:

  • Your recurring price is unchanged or only slightly higher.
  • Free lines and valuable discounts remain intact.
  • The replacement adds benefits you actually use.
  • Your account qualifies for a useful price guarantee.
  • T-Mobile coverage is materially better where you live, work, and travel.

Call T-Mobile before making a change

Ask these questions:

  • What was my exact former plan code?
  • What is my exact replacement plan code?
  • What is the recurring service-charge difference?
  • Which free-line and promotional credits remain?
  • Has my tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive status changed?
  • Which price protection applies to my account?
  • Did Kickback or another legacy feature end?
  • Is there a lower T-Mobile plan that preserves my lines and discounts?
  • If I cancel because of this increase, what final-month credit or reimbursement is available?
  • Can you provide the answer in writing?

Customer service may not be able to restore a retired plan, and migration plans may be account-specific rather than ordinary retail options. Escalate if the bill does not match the written notice, and preserve the notice and billing records.

Switching may make sense when:

  • The increase applies across many lines and materially changes the household budget.
  • You no longer use the legacy perks.
  • Another provider offers better coverage in your actual locations.
  • Credits or upgrade benefits were lost.
  • A like-for-like alternative is cheaper after taxes, fees, device payments, and add-ons.

Compare total cost, not an advertised base price. Include taxes, regulatory fees, device installments, insurance, international service, hotspot needs, activation charges, promotional expiration dates, and any device payoff requirement.

Before switching to another T-Mobile plan or provider

Use T-Mobile’s official plan comparison to review current public offerings, but remember that an account-specific migration plan may not appear as a normal retail option. If you are considering T-Mobile Home Internet, check address-specific eligibility and verify the current offer, taxes, and equipment terms. T-Mobile also offers a network trial that can help test coverage, although it does not reproduce every account benefit or establish that another provider is cheaper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepaid service can suit light users who own their phones, but compare deprioritization, roaming, hotspot rules, multi-line pricing, support, financing, and taxes before moving. Current competitor prices and promotions change frequently, so a responsible comparison requires checking offers on the date you switch.

Important edge cases

  • No notice: Not receiving a text does not prove you are unaffected. Check the portal and billing statement.
  • Partial migration: One line or service type may change while another remains on its previous pricing.
  • Home Internet: Analyze it separately from phone lines even though the maximum reported increase is also $6.
  • Connected devices: Tablets and watches may have the lower, up-to-$3 ceiling.
  • Unexpectedly large increase: Look first for lost credits, changed taxes, device payments, or add-ons.
  • Inconsistent explanations: Store staff, phone agents, and account tools may not describe the transition identically. Keep written evidence and request escalation.
  • FCC complaint: Filing a complaint can create a record and prompt a carrier response, but it does not guarantee restoration or a refund.

Do not conclude that T-Mobile violated a price promise without reviewing the account’s activation date, plan promotion, notice, and applicable terms.
