The deal at a glance
The original Cyber Week coverage reported discounts across Apple’s four main iPhone 16 models:
- iPhone 16
- iPhone 16 Plus
- iPhone 16 Pro
- iPhone 16 Pro Max
The promotion was reported by Digital Trends, but the accessible record does not expose enough detail to verify the original retailer, storage configuration, exact sale price, expiration date, unlocking status, or whether activation and trade-in were required. Those terms should be confirmed on the retailer’s archived offer page rather than assumed.

That distinction matters. “On sale” can mean an immediate unlocked price reduction, a retailer gift card, a carrier bill-credit promotion, or a lower price available only with a new line, trade-in, and installment plan. The four models were included in the broad claim, but that does not prove they received identical savings.
Why I’d choose the iPhone 16 Pro
The iPhone 16 Pro is the best overall balance in this lineup—not the cheapest, longest-lasting, or largest model.
A much better display
The Pro has a 6.3-inch OLED display with ProMotion, adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, and an Always-On display. Scrolling, animations, and supported games look smoother than on the standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, which use OLED displays without ProMotion.

More useful cameras
Its camera system combines a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and a dedicated 12MP telephoto camera. The ultra-wide camera is more capable than the standard models’ ultra-wide camera, while the telephoto lens provides genuine optical reach for portraits, distant subjects, and travel photography.
The Pro also supports features aimed at more demanding creators, including ProRAW, ProRes, LiDAR-assisted capabilities, and Dolby Vision video recording up to 4K at 120 frames per second in supported workflows. Most casual photographers will not need all of that, but these are meaningful upgrades rather than cosmetic “Pro” branding.

More headroom for demanding use
The A18 Pro chip is more capable than the A18 used in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. For everyday tasks, the difference may not be dramatic. It matters more for intensive games, advanced photography and video, and keeping performance comfortable over a longer ownership period.
Premium construction without the Pro Max’s bulk
The Pro uses a titanium frame and textured matte glass while retaining a more manageable 6.3-inch size. The 6.9-inch Pro Max offers more screen and battery, but it is a substantially larger phone. For many buyers, the Pro avoids the central compromise of the Max: paying and carrying more primarily to gain size and endurance.

Apple rates the iPhone 16 Pro for up to 27 hours of video playback. That is better than the standard iPhone 16’s rated 22 hours and matches the iPhone 16 Plus’s rated 27 hours, while the Pro Max reaches up to 33 hours. These are Apple’s manufacturer estimates, not independent battery-test results.

Why you might choose the iPhone 16 instead
The standard iPhone 16 is the better value if your priority is keeping the purchase price low. It still includes the A18 chip, Camera Control, the Action button, a 48MP Fusion main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, macro photography, MagSafe, satellite emergency features, and compatibility with Apple Intelligence features available in supported software, languages, and regions.

Choose it over the Pro if you mostly take casual photos, do not need a telephoto lens, do not care about a 120Hz display, and would rather spend the difference on storage, accessories, or keep it in savings. It is not a poor purchase simply because the Pro is the stronger all-rounder.
Why you might choose the iPhone 16 Plus
The Plus is the practical large-screen choice. Its 6.7-inch display is better suited to watching video, reading, gaming, and using the keyboard, while its Apple-rated battery life reaches up to 27 hours of video playback.
The trade-off is that it retains the standard model’s A18 chip, non-Pro display, and dual-camera system. Choose it when screen size and battery matter more than ProMotion, Always-On functionality, telephoto reach, and advanced video tools.
Why you might choose the iPhone 16 Pro Max
The Pro Max is the right choice for someone who specifically wants the largest display and longest battery life. It has the same Pro camera system and A18 Pro chip as the Pro, but adds a 6.9-inch display, up to 33 hours of Apple-rated video playback, and 256GB starting storage.
It is less compelling as a general recommendation because its additional capabilities are mainly size, battery, and storage. If you do not need those three things, the smaller Pro delivers the more balanced experience.

Check the economics before calling it a bargain
Evaluate the effective purchase cost, not the headline monthly payment:
Phone payments + required service + activation fees + taxes + trade-in cost − promotional credits.
A carrier offer advertised as “free” or a few dollars per month may require a particular unlimited plan, a new line or port-in, a qualifying trade-in, and 24 or 36 months of bill credits. Leaving early can forfeit future credits and leave you responsible for the remaining device balance. Compare that commitment with the price of an unlocked phone and the service plan you would otherwise keep.
Also verify:
- whether the phone is unlocked from the start;
- which storage capacities and colors qualify;
- whether the saving is immediate or delivered as a gift card or bill credit;
- whether sales tax is charged before or after the discount;
- whether a trade-in is mandatory;
- whether inventory is new, refurbished, or open-box;
- the return period, warranty, and AppleCare+ eligibility; and
- the offer’s expiration date and stock limits.
Apple is the clearest route for an unlocked purchase, Apple Trade In, AppleCare+, and direct support. Best Buy can be useful for unlocked discounts, carrier activation offers, trade-ins, and open-box inventory, but inspect condition, battery health, warranty coverage, and return rules. Carrier promotions from Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile can be valuable for customers already intending to stay, but should not be compared using the phone payment alone.

Not automatically. The 2024 Cyber Week promotion is historical, and the iPhone 16 is no longer Apple’s newest flagship generation. Apple’s current comparison page lists newer iPhone 17-series models, so the relevant question is whether the remaining iPhone 16 discount is large enough to outweigh the benefits of buying newer hardware.

Before purchasing, compare the exact iPhone 16 configuration with a current-generation base model at the same retailer. Check display technology, camera features, modem and connectivity, battery claims, software support expectations, warranty status, and whether the iPhone 16 Pro is still sold new rather than only refurbished or open-box.
The iPhone 16e should not be silently added to this historical comparison. Apple introduced it later, in February 2025, and it was not one of the four models covered by the original 2024 Cyber Week claim.
My buying recommendation
Choose the iPhone 16 Pro if you want the most complete phone in a reasonably manageable size and the discount brings it close enough to the larger standard or Pro Max models to justify the upgrade.
