Best Buy laptop deals: Cheap laptops starting at $200

By TheFinanceBase Team 8 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best Buy laptops priced around $200 are usually entry-level Chromebooks or basic Windows machines—not general-purpose powerhouses. For browsing, email, streaming, school portals and cloud documents, a Chromebook is often the least frustrating choice. If you need Windows-only software, prioritize 8GB of RAM and at least 128GB of storage, even if that means buying open-box or spending closer to $300–$400.

The prices below were seen on Best Buy pages on August 16, 2026. Prices, inventory, sellers, conditions and deal end dates can change quickly, so verify the live listing before purchasing.

Best Best Buy laptop deals at a glance

There is no single best $200 laptop. The right choice depends primarily on the operating system and the software you need.

  • SKILLFULLY DESIGNED. MILITARY TOUGH: Built with premium craftsmanship to withstand the occasional drop or ding.

  • 3X FASTER THAN THE PREVIOUS GENERATION OF WIFI: Crush your schoolwork in record time with Wi-Fi that’s three times faster than the previous generation of Wi-Fi.
  • YOUR PHONE AND CHROMEBOOK WORK BETTER TOGETHER: Easily transfer files between devices, and control your phone right from your Chromebook.

Best cheap Chromebook deals

At the absolute bottom of the market, ChromeOS generally offers a better experience than Windows because it is designed around browser-based applications and requires fewer resources. That makes a $180–$230 Chromebook a sensible choice for a child’s schoolwork, web browsing, streaming, email, Google Docs, online coursework and basic video calls.

Lenovo IdeaPad 3i Chromebook: best cheap large-screen pick

A Lenovo IdeaPad 3i Chromebook listed at $179.99 had a 15.6-inch Full HD display, an Intel Celeron processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage. The displayed comparison price was $249, but that “was” price is Best Buy’s reference—not proof of an independently verified historical low.

The Full HD screen is the important advantage. A large 15.6-inch display is easier to share and read than a small panel, but confirm the resolution on the live listing because similarly named configurations can differ. The trade-off is typical for this price: 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC are adequate for light ChromeOS use but not generous.

Acer Chromebook 315: best if screen size matters

The Acer Chromebook 315 appeared at $219 with a 15.6-inch display, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage. Because Best Buy listings may include HD and Full HD variants, check the exact model number and resolution before buying. Prefer Full HD when the price difference is small.

ASUS Chromebook CM1402: a reasonable 14-inch alternative

The ASUS Chromebook CM1402 was listed at approximately $219.99 with a 14-inch Full HD display, MediaTek Kompanio 520 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage. It is a sensible basic Chromebook if the model’s ChromeOS support date and the live specification page check out.

Acer Chromebook 311: cheapest compact option

The Acer Chromebook 311 appeared for $199.99 with an 11.6-inch HD screen, Intel Celeron N4500, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage. Its small size can suit younger students or frequent travelers, but the display is a meaningful compromise for long assignments, spreadsheets and multitasking.

HP Chromebook 14: basic school and home use

An HP 14 Chromebook listed at $229 had an Intel Celeron N4120, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage. It can handle basic browsing and schoolwork, but a newer processor or Full HD display may be a better use of a similar budget. Check the update-support date before purchasing any older Chromebook.

Best cheap Windows laptop deals

Windows is the correct choice when you need a Windows-only desktop program, a legacy application, specialized school software, particular peripherals or broader compatibility. But the operating system does not make a low-end laptop fast. At $230–$280, Windows models commonly combine 4GB of RAM with a low-end processor and limited storage.

Lenovo 100e 81ER000BUS 11.6" HD Chromebook, Intel Dual-Core Celeron N3350 1.1 GHz up to 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM, 16GB SSD, Bluetooth, USB Type C, 802.11ac, Webcam, Chrome OS (Renewed)
  • Intel Celeron N3350 dual-core processor 1.10GHz (with Max Turbo Speed of 2.40GHz).
  • 11.6" HD ( 1366 x 768 ) LED Display, Intel HD Graphics 500 Integrated
  • 4GB 1600MHz LPDDR4 System Memory, 16GB Solid State Drive, No Optical Drive, Spill-resistant Keyboard.

HP 14 with Intel N150: newer processor, still a memory compromise

An HP 14 with Intel N150, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of UFS storage and Windows 11 appeared at roughly $236–$249.99, depending on the listing. The newer processor and 128GB capacity make it more attractive than a 64GB Windows model, but 4GB of RAM remains its central limitation. It is best for light browsing, documents, streaming and simple online tasks.

HP 14 with Pentium Silver and 128GB SSD

A different HP 14 listing showed a Pentium Silver processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of SSD storage and Windows 11 for $279.99, previously $299.99. The SSD capacity is more practical than 64GB, but this is still an entry-level machine. Do not expect comfortable performance with many browser tabs, large spreadsheets, editing software or simultaneous video meetings.

HP 14 with Celeron N4500

HP 14 models with an Intel Celeron N4500, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and Windows 11 in S mode appeared around $229.99–$269.99. Windows S mode limits app installation to Microsoft Store applications unless you switch out of it. Check the current policy and compatibility requirements before buying, particularly if you need traditional desktop software.

Why an open-box laptop may be the better deal

Best Buy’s open-box products are customer returns resold at a discount. The exact price can depend on the selected store, cosmetic condition, missing accessories and local inventory. Open-box listings should be treated separately from new products, not mixed into one ranking.

Examples seen around August 16, 2026 included:

  • Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 3i Chromebook with a 12.2-inch 2K touchscreen, Intel N100, 4GB RAM and 64GB eMMC: from $105.99.
  • HP 14 Chromebook with Intel Celeron N4500, 4GB RAM and 64GB eMMC: from $124.99.
  • HP 14 Windows laptop with Intel N150 and 128GB UFS: from $171.99.
  • Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Windows laptop with a 15.6-inch Full HD display, Intel N150, 8GB RAM and 128GB UFS: from $220.99.

The Lenovo open-box Windows model is particularly compelling on paper because 8GB of RAM is a major improvement over the 4GB configurations common at this price. However, the “from” price may only apply at one location or to one condition level.

Open-box checklist

  1. Select your local Best Buy store and confirm the exact price.
  2. Read the stated condition, including any cosmetic or functional notes.
  3. Confirm that the charger and other required accessories are included.
  4. Inspect the return policy and warranty before checkout.
  5. Ask about battery condition where the listing does not make it clear.
  6. Compare the open-box saving with the price of the same or similar new model.

Best Buy search pages can also include marketplace products. Confirm whether the item is sold and shipped by Best Buy, sold by a third party and fulfilled by Best Buy, or handled entirely by a marketplace seller. Warranty and return arrangements can differ.

What a $200 laptop can realistically do

Good fits

  • Web browsing and email
  • Google Docs and Microsoft web applications
  • Streaming video
  • Basic video calls
  • School portals and online coursework
  • Light document work
  • Cloud-based applications

Poor fits

  • Modern PC gaming
  • Video editing and 3D work
  • Professional photo editing
  • Large spreadsheets
  • Virtual machines
  • Heavy coding environments
  • Large local media libraries

A $200 Chromebook may feel more usable than a $250 Windows laptop for web-only work. That does not make the Chromebook universally better: if your required application runs only on Windows, compatibility matters more than browser responsiveness.

Chromebook versus Windows: a quick decision guide

  • Need Windows-only software? Choose Windows, and avoid assuming that any inexpensive Windows laptop will perform well.
  • Mostly use websites, cloud documents and streaming? A Chromebook is usually the stronger low-cost choice.
  • Need desktop applications and local files? Choose Windows with at least 128GB of storage; 256GB is much more comfortable.
  • Want the most hardware for about $200? Check open-box and refurbished listings, while accepting condition and battery uncertainty.
  • Need the laptop to last several years? Target 8GB of RAM and 128GB or more storage, even if that pushes the budget above $300.

Specifications to look for

For a new Chromebook

  • RAM: 4GB is the floor; 8GB is preferable.
  • Storage: 64GB is workable for cloud-first use; 128GB is better.
  • Screen: Prefer Full HD on 14-inch and larger models.
  • Processor: When prices are close, favor newer Intel N-series, MediaTek Kompanio or Chromebook Plus-qualified hardware over very old Celerons.
  • Support: Confirm the model’s ChromeOS update-support date.
  • Ports: USB-C charging is useful, but check whether the port supports external displays.

For a new Windows laptop

  • RAM: Prefer 8GB; treat 4GB as an extreme-budget compromise.
  • Storage: 128GB is a practical minimum; 256GB is better.
  • Processor: Prefer Intel N150 or a recent equivalent over older entry-level Celerons when the price difference is small.
  • Display: Prefer 1920×1080. A 1366×768 panel is a noticeable compromise on a 14- or 15-inch laptop.
  • Operating system: Check whether Windows 11 is in S mode.
  • Upgradeability: Verify whether RAM and storage are soldered or replaceable.

Common budget-laptop traps

4GB of RAM

4GB can work for one or two browser tabs and simple documents, but it is a poor fit for many tabs, video conferencing alongside documents, photo editing, coding environments, large spreadsheets, multiple user profiles or heavy browser extensions.

64GB storage

64GB is especially restrictive on Windows after updates and applications are installed. On ChromeOS it is more manageable because cloud storage is central, but downloads, Android apps, Linux environments and offline media can still fill it quickly.

eMMC versus SSD or UFS

eMMC storage is generally slower and less flexible than an SSD. UFS is not automatically bad, but “128GB storage” does not mean every drive has the same performance or upgrade options. Check the storage type rather than relying only on capacity.

Large but low-resolution displays

A 15.6-inch HD screen is not automatically a better bargain than a 14-inch Full HD screen. The smaller Full HD display may look sharper and provide more usable workspace.

Clock speed and discount percentages

“Up to” processor speeds usually describe burst behavior, not sustained performance. Do not compare Intel, AMD and MediaTek chips by clock speed alone. Likewise, a large displayed discount does not prove that the current price is unusually low.

Bundled accessories

A dock, USB hub, mouse or sleeve may increase the apparent value without improving the laptop’s processor, RAM, storage or display. Evaluate the computer first.

How to evaluate a Best Buy deal before buying

  1. Confirm the exact model number and configuration.
  2. Verify the operating system and whether Windows is in S mode.
  3. Check RAM, storage capacity and storage type.
  4. Check display size and resolution.
  5. Confirm the seller, fulfillment method and product condition.
  6. For open-box products, select your store and verify local availability.
  7. For Chromebooks, check the update-support end date.
  8. Use the current price—not only the claimed savings—as your comparison point.
  9. Read recent reviews for the specific hardware configuration, while remembering that ratings are not controlled performance tests.
  10. Confirm return and warranty terms, then account for tax, required accessories, software subscriptions and optional protection plans.

When spending more is the smarter financial decision

If the laptop will be used daily for several years, the cheapest option may have the highest practical cost: you may replace it sooner, tolerate slower work or pay for extra storage and software elsewhere. Around $300–$400, a Windows laptop with 8GB of RAM, a stronger processor and 128GB or 256GB of storage is often meaningfully less compromised.

For buyers who cannot exceed $200, choose a Chromebook unless Windows software is mandatory. For buyers who can reach $230–$300, prioritize 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage or a newer processor. For buyers willing to accept an open-box product, search for a recent 8GB laptop before settling for a new 4GB model.
