Not reliably. NVIDIA announced the RTX 50 Series on January 6, 2025, and launched the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 on January 30, 2025. Instead of triggering a broad RTX 4090 price collapse, the new generation was followed by scarce 4090 inventory and unusually high RTX 5090 street prices. As a result, some RTX 4090 listings became cheaper than short-term peaks, but the card did not generally become a bargain.
For a buyer today, the meaningful comparison is not the RTX 4090’s old $1,599 MSRP. It is the price, warranty, condition, and availability of a specific 4090 compared with an actually in-stock RTX 5090 or RTX 5080.

The RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 launch prices
NVIDIA launched the GeForce RTX 4090 on October 12, 2022, at a U.S. Founders Edition MSRP of $1,599. That was a reference price, not a promise that every ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, PNY, or Zotac model would sell for exactly that amount. Factory-overclocked cards and models with premium coolers commonly carried different prices.

NVIDIA’s official marketplace listing is useful for establishing that list price, but it showed the RTX 5090 as out of stock when inspected, so $1,999 should not be treated as a reliably obtainable transaction price.

What happened after the RTX 50 Series launched?
The usual expectation was straightforward: a new flagship would give retailers a reason to discount older stock, while existing RTX 4090 owners would sell their cards to fund upgrades. That can create lower prices in both the new and used markets.
That pattern did not produce a dependable RTX 4090 discount. The 4090 became difficult to replace with fresh inventory, while RTX 5090 availability was poor and market prices were far above its official MSRP. Buyers who wanted a powerful NVIDIA card, 24GB of VRAM, or established CUDA and OptiX support still had reasons to seek out the 4090.
A July 2026 snapshot from GPUDrip recorded a lowest qualifying in-stock RTX 4090 listing of approximately $2,100. GPUDrip said that price was about 31.3% above the original $1,599 MSRP. The figure was down from roughly $2,795 in June, but it was a lowest-listing snapshot—not a nationwide average and not proof that every buyer could obtain a card for that amount.
This distinction matters: a product can fall substantially from a temporary peak and still be expensive relative to its launch price. The GPUDrip methodology excluded out-of-stock, discontinued, and refurbished listings, making the number more useful than an obsolete listing, but it remains date-specific.

Why the RTX 4090 did not automatically get cheaper
1. Scarce remaining supply
New-generation launches reduce prices most reliably when retailers have substantial old inventory to clear. If the previous flagship is no longer being replenished normally, the market can behave differently: fewer cards remain, and sellers can charge more for buyers who specifically want that model.
2. The RTX 5090 was not consistently available at MSRP
Comparing a $2,100 RTX 4090 with a theoretical $1,999 RTX 5090 is misleading if the 5090 is unavailable at $1,999. In an August 2026 snapshot, Tom’s Hardware reported median Newegg prices of $4,699.99 for the RTX 5090, $1,499.99 for the RTX 5080, and $899.99 for the RTX 5070. These were marketplace medians, not NVIDIA list prices.

When the successor is scarce or heavily marked up, the older card can remain attractive despite being technologically behind it. The same supply problem that harms the new card’s value can support the older card’s price.

3. The 24GB VRAM niche remains valuable
The RTX 4090 has 24GB of GDDR6X memory. That matters for some local AI models, rendering projects, machine-learning workloads, and high-resolution gaming settings. Lower-tier RTX 50 Series cards may be newer, but they do not automatically replace a 24GB card for memory-constrained workloads.
4. Performance comparisons are more complicated than generation numbers
The RTX 5090 has 21,760 CUDA cores, a 512-bit memory interface, 1,792GB/s of memory bandwidth, and 32GB of GDDR7. The RTX 4090 has 16,384 CUDA cores, a 384-bit interface, 1,008GB/s of bandwidth, and 24GB of GDDR6X.
NVIDIA claimed that the RTX 5090 can outperform the RTX 4090 by up to 2×. That is a manufacturer claim, not a universal independent gaming result. Actual differences depend on the game or application, resolution, ray tracing, DLSS settings, frame generation, and benchmark method. DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation is a 50-Series feature and should not be presented as equivalent to native-rendering performance.

Is buying an RTX 4090 still sensible?
Buying new
A new RTX 4090 makes financial sense only when its price is clearly below an equivalently available RTX 5090, or when the 4090’s 24GB memory and established software support matter more to you than newer features. Compare the complete checkout price, including shipping, tax, seller identity, and warranty.

Buying used
A used RTX 4090 can be reasonable when it is meaningfully discounted and the seller permits testing or returns. The discount must compensate for age, remaining warranty uncertainty, possible fan or cooler wear, and the risk of hidden damage.
Ask for the exact model, serial number, proof of purchase, usage history, and warranty status. A card used for continuous AI workloads or mining is not automatically defective, but its operating history should affect the price and the level of testing you require.
Buying refurbished or open-box
“Refurbished,” “renewed,” and “open-box” do not have one universal definition. Confirm who performed the refurbishment, the return window, warranty duration, included accessories, and whether the original manufacturer’s warranty transfers. A low headline price is not attractive if a defective card must be shipped internationally or cannot be returned.
For gaming and creative work
The 4090 remains relevant for demanding 4K gaming, rendering, and NVIDIA-supported creative applications. It may also be preferable for CUDA-, OptiX-, or NVENC-dependent workflows. Buyers who specifically want DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation or Blackwell-only features should instead consider a 50-Series card, accepting that current market pricing may be severe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat is a good RTX 4090 price?
There is no single fair price that applies to every RTX 4090. Use this framework instead:
- New with full warranty: compare it with the cheapest RTX 5090 that is genuinely in stock and available from a reputable seller. The 4090 should offer a clear savings, not merely match the successor’s nominal MSRP.
- Used with transferable warranty: require a meaningful discount from comparable new-card pricing. Verify that the warranty actually transfers to a second owner.
- Used without warranty: demand a larger discount for unknown usage, potential connector damage, and repair risk.
- Refurbished: buy only with a clearly stated warranty and return period.
- Open-box: confirm that the card includes its adapter and that warranty coverage remains valid.
The $2,100 July 2026 figure is a useful market reference, not a target price that every buyer should accept. At that level, compare carefully with an RTX 5090, RTX 5080, and any local used listings. A 4090 priced near or above a real, warrantied 5090 is generally difficult to justify.

RTX 4090 alternatives
RTX 5090
Choose the RTX 5090 for maximum NVIDIA performance, 32GB of VRAM, and Blackwell-specific features. Avoid it when the available price is several thousand dollars above MSRP and your workload does not need its additional performance or memory. NVIDIA’s official $1,999 figure is a list-price signal, not evidence of current inventory.
RTX 5080
The RTX 5080 can be a better financial choice for 4K gaming when it is priced well below a 4090. It is less suitable for buyers who require 24GB or more of VRAM, or who find a substantially cheaper used 4090.

These cards can suit 1440p gaming and new builds where warranty coverage, efficiency, and current retail support matter more than flagship performance. Do not interpret early claims that the RTX 5070 matches the RTX 4090 as a universal native-rendering equivalence; the result depends heavily on DLSS and frame-generation settings.
AMD Radeon options
Current Radeon cards such as the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT deserve consideration when rasterized gaming performance per dollar is the priority. They are not drop-in replacements for workflows that require CUDA, OptiX, NVIDIA-specific encoders, or DLSS. Check application compatibility before switching platforms.

Used RTX 4090 inspection checklist
- Confirm the exact model and match its serial number to the seller’s documentation.
- Inspect the PCB, cooler, screws, fans, heatsink, and power connector for burns, bending, missing parts, or modification.
- Run a sustained game or benchmark. Check for crashes, artifacting, abnormal temperatures, and excessive fan noise.
- Inspect the 12VHPWR connector and cable for heat damage. The plug should be fully inserted, with no sharp bend immediately beside the connector.
- Verify the power supply is a quality, adequately rated unit for the specific board-partner model and the rest of the PC. Requirements vary by model and CPU.
- Obtain a written return policy, not merely a verbal assurance that the card works.
- Do not treat a GPU-Z screenshot as proof of condition; it confirms limited identifying information and cannot reveal every thermal, electrical, or stability problem.
The financial rule for deciding
Buy the RTX 4090 when the actual transaction price is substantially below an available RTX 5090, the card has credible warranty or return protection, and you need its 24GB memory or NVIDIA software ecosystem. Skip it when the purchase is driven only by the assumption that an older flagship must be cheap.
Also remember that the purchase price is not the entire cost. A 450W-class GPU can require a suitable power supply, adequate case cooling, and potentially higher electricity use than a lower-tier alternative. For a used card, the expected cost of a failure should be part of the comparison.
