Short answer: Solana usually reaches a user-visible transaction status sooner and charges a fee built from signatures and requested compute resources. Ethereum mainnet advances in 12-second slots, but its strongest settlement state arrives only after checkpoint votes from at least two-thirds of staked ETH. Ethereum fees are based on gas consumed, a changing base fee, and an optional priority tip. Neither chain is always faster or cheaper: the answer changes with the workload, congestion, priority settings, and whether you mean Ethereum mainnet or an Ethereum rollup.

Speed has three different meanings

When someone asks whether Solana is faster than Ethereum, they may be asking about three separate events:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Inclusion: the transaction is accepted into a block.
  • User-facing confirmation: a wallet or application reports that the transaction has reached a chosen confidence level.
  • Finality: the protocol has reached its strongest settlement condition, making a rollback extraordinarily difficult under its consensus assumptions.

Those events do not happen at the same moment. A transaction can be included and usable for a low-risk action before it is finalized. Comparing a fast confirmation on one network with finality on the other produces a misleading result.

Question Solana Ethereum proof-of-stake
What determines early visibility? A block and the selected commitment level: processed, confirmed, or finalized. Inclusion in a block proposed during a 12-second slot.
What is the strongest state described here? The transaction’s block becomes a root. A checkpoint is finalized after a supermajority link supported by votes representing at least two-thirds of staked ETH.
Can an included transaction precede finality? Yes. Processed and confirmed are earlier states than finalized. Yes. Inclusion precedes justified and finalized checkpoints.
Is the headline timing a universal promise? No. Wall-clock confirmation depends on the leader, network conditions, and the status an application chooses. No. A 12-second slot is a scheduling interval, not a finality guarantee.

How Solana reports confirmation

Processed, confirmed, and finalized

Solana exposes three commitment levels. Processed means a node has processed the transaction in a block it currently knows about. It is optimistic and can tolerate rollback only in flows where that risk is acceptable. Confirmed means the block has received the protocol’s confirmation status and is the recommended level for most production, user-facing transaction updates. Finalized means the transaction’s block has become a root, the strongest state in Solana’s terminology.

Solana documentation defines confirmation time as the wall-clock interval from a leader creating a tick entry to a confirmed block. That definition starts inside the network; it does not promise that a person’s wallet, exchange, or application will display the update at exactly the same time. Internet latency, RPC provider queues, wallet polling, and application processing can add delay after the chain has reached the relevant state.

Which commitment should an application use?

  • Use processed for low-risk interfaces that need immediate optimistic feedback and can recover if the transaction is rolled back.
  • Use confirmed for ordinary production status messages, balances that are not yet being treated as irreversible, and most interactive user flows.
  • Wait for finalized before triggering an off-chain action that cannot be undone, such as releasing a permanent entitlement or treating a settlement as irreversible.

These labels are status choices, not a promise that every observer sees identical end-to-end latency. Two applications can show different messages for the same transaction if they query different commitment levels or use different RPC services.

How Ethereum reaches inclusion and finality

Slots and epochs

Ethereum proof-of-stake divides time into 12-second slots. A validator may propose a block in each slot, but a slot is only an opportunity for proposal and inclusion. It does not mean that every transaction is included within 12 seconds, nor that an included transaction is finalized then. Transactions can wait in the mempool, compete for block space, or be delayed by networking and fee selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thirty-two slots make an epoch. Ethereum’s finality mechanism works with checkpoint pairs associated with epochs. Validators vote on the chain, and a checkpoint becomes finalized when the protocol observes the required supermajority link: votes representing at least two-thirds of staked ETH support the link between checkpoints. This is a consensus condition, not a timer attached to an individual transaction.

Inclusion, justification, and finalization

An included transaction is normally useful before finality for actions whose risk model permits a short reorganization window. Later checkpoints provide stronger evidence that the chain history containing that transaction will not be replaced under normal protocol assumptions. Applications handling irreversible settlement should therefore define whether they require inclusion, a justified checkpoint, or a finalized checkpoint, and communicate that choice to users.

Ethereum’s 12-second slot and its checkpoint-based finality answer different questions. The slot describes how often proposal opportunities occur; the checkpoint process describes when the network has accumulated enough coordinated stake votes for the stronger settlement state.

Which chain is faster in practice?

For a simple wallet transfer, Solana often feels faster because applications commonly report the confirmed commitment before the transaction reaches finalized status. Ethereum mainnet can show inclusion in an early block, but applications that wait for stronger settlement must wait for checkpoint progress and the relevant stake votes. That is why a comparison must state the event being timed.

If you measure… What to examine Why the result can differ
Time to first network acknowledgment Solana’s processed status or Ethereum transaction propagation and inclusion. RPC path, mempool conditions, leader or proposer timing, and fee selection affect the observation.
Time to an ordinary user-facing confirmation Solana confirmed commitment versus an Ethereum application’s inclusion policy. Wallets and services choose different thresholds and polling intervals.
Time to strongest protocol settlement Solana finalized status versus Ethereum finalized checkpoint coverage. The protocols define finality differently; a raw seconds-per-block comparison is not equivalent.
Time for an exchange or bridge to credit funds The service’s own confirmation policy. A custodian may require more confirmations than the underlying chain requires for a low-risk display.

There is no single honest answer such as “Solana takes X seconds and Ethereum takes Y seconds” that applies to every transaction and every application. A useful benchmark records the transaction type, the commitment or confirmation rule, the observation point, the network conditions, and whether failed or system-generated transactions are included.

How Solana transaction fees are calculated

Base fee per signature

Solana’s documented fee has a base component charged per transaction signature. A transaction requiring more signatures therefore has a different base cost from one requiring fewer signatures. The signature count is a property of the transaction, not a fixed price for every operation on the network.

Optional priority fee

A sender can add a priority fee based on the compute units requested and the price offered per compute unit. In simplified form:

Solana fee = signature-based base fee + (requested compute units × compute-unit price)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The priority portion is optional, but it can affect scheduling when demand for block space is high. Requesting more compute units can raise the maximum priority charge even if the instruction ultimately uses less work, so applications should set compute limits carefully rather than treating the priority setting as free insurance.

Why two Solana transactions can cost different amounts

  • They may carry different numbers of signatures.
  • They may request different compute-unit limits.
  • They may specify different compute-unit prices.
  • They may be submitted under different congestion conditions.
  • The underlying operation may require different instructions and accounts.

A quoted SOL amount is not a stable dollar comparison. Any conversion to dollars needs a timestamp and a stated exchange-rate method, because both the token price and the transaction fee can change.

How Ethereum gas fees are calculated

Gas consumed and gas price

Ethereum charges for the computational work a transaction consumes, measured in gas. The total payment combines a dynamic base fee with an optional priority tip paid to the proposer. In simplified form:

Ethereum fee = gas used × (base fee + priority fee)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transaction’s operation determines how much gas it needs. A simple transfer and a contract interaction do not consume the same amount. Contract calls can also use more gas when they execute additional storage writes or complex logic.

Why the base fee rises

Ethereum’s block gas target and gas limit constrain how much work can be included. When demand persistently presses against available block space, the protocol’s base fee adjusts upward. A sender can add a priority tip to compete for inclusion, especially when many users are bidding for the same near-term capacity. The result is a fee that varies with both the transaction’s gas requirement and the market for block space at submission time.

“Gas is high” can therefore mean several things: the chosen operation is computationally expensive, the network is busy, the sender selected a larger tip, or the ETH-to-dollar exchange rate moved. Checking only the ETH amount without those qualifiers hides the cause.

Are Solana fees always cheaper than Ethereum fees?

No. Solana often has a lower nominal fee for a comparable simple action, but “always cheaper” is not a defensible rule. The chains price different resources, and the comparison can change when the operation, congestion, priority settings, or asset price changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Factor Effect on Solana Effect on Ethereum
Transaction complexity More signatures or requested compute units can increase the charge. More computation and storage activity increase gas used.
Congestion A higher compute-unit price may be used to improve scheduling. The base fee can rise and users may add a larger priority tip.
Token exchange rate The same SOL-denominated fee can be worth more or less in dollars over time. The same ETH-denominated fee can likewise change in dollar value.
Application policy An app may choose a conservative compute limit or priority price. An app may choose a gas limit and priority tip that differ from another wallet’s defaults.

For a fair comparison, record the same operation on each network, quote the fee in the native token, note the timestamp, and state the exchange-rate source if a fiat figure is shown. Comparing a historical SOL fee with a current ETH fee, or comparing a simple transfer with a contract call, is not meaningful.

Why TPS headlines are easy to misuse

Transactions per second is not a universal unit unless the workload is defined. Ethereum documentation describes capacity through block gas targets and limits. Solana documentation describes compute-unit limits and a broader scheduler cost model. Those measures are not interchangeable.

A credible throughput comparison should specify:

  • the exact transaction workload and instruction mix;
  • whether the measurement uses successful transactions only or includes failures;
  • whether network-generated traffic is counted;
  • the time window and network conditions;
  • the commitment level or inclusion rule used for the result; and
  • whether the comparison is Ethereum mainnet, a particular rollup, or another environment.

Without those details, a larger TPS number may simply reflect a lighter workload, different accounting, or traffic that does not represent what a user is trying to do. Throughput and latency are also different: a system can process substantial aggregate work while an individual transaction waits for a particular block, slot, or fee market.

Ethereum mainnet versus Ethereum rollups

“Ethereum” can mean the layer-1 mainnet or an application running on a rollup that settles to Ethereum. Rollups process transactions outside mainnet and post data or commitments back to Ethereum. They can reduce the fee paid by an individual user and increase effective application throughput, but their settlement and finality paths depend on the rollup’s design and on Ethereum’s posting and acceptance process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing Solana with Ethereum, name the layer. A rollup may provide a different user-facing confirmation time and fee from Ethereum mainnet, while still relying on Ethereum for part of its security or settlement. Treating all Ethereum transactions as if they use one fee market or one finality timeline obscures the practical difference.

Choosing the right confirmation policy

For a normal wallet interface

Show an early status so the user knows the transaction was received, then update the message when the chain reaches the application’s chosen confirmation level. Make clear whether “confirmed” means Solana confirmed, Ethereum included, or a service-specific threshold.

For a marketplace or game item

Use a commitment level that matches the value at risk. A reversible in-game action can often tolerate an earlier status, while transferring a scarce item or granting a permanent entitlement may justify waiting for a stronger state.

For withdrawals, bridges, and irreversible off-chain actions

Define the finality requirement before sending funds. On Solana, use finalized status when the action must not be triggered by an optimistic view. On Ethereum, wait for the application’s defined finalized-checkpoint policy rather than assuming that inclusion in one 12-second slot is enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For analytics and performance testing

Log submission time, first observation, inclusion, chosen confirmation, finality, RPC endpoint, transaction type, fee settings, and whether the transaction succeeded. Publish the workload and measurement rule with any latency or TPS result.

Common failure modes and practical fixes

The wallet says pending even though the transaction is on-chain

The wallet may be polling slowly, using a stricter commitment level, or querying an RPC service that is behind. Check the transaction through a second reliable observer and identify whether the status is processed, confirmed, or finalized on Solana, or included versus finalized on Ethereum. Do not resubmit blindly until you know whether the original transaction can still execute.

A low-fee transaction is delayed

On Solana, the selected compute-unit price may be unattractive during congestion. On Ethereum, the base fee and priority tip may not match current demand. Review the transaction’s fee parameters and the network’s current conditions; increasing priority can improve scheduling but does not change the work the transaction must perform.

A transaction appears confirmed but an irreversible action has not run

The service may intentionally wait for finalized status or for additional internal checks. Confirm which threshold the service documents instead of treating a wallet’s early notification as a settlement guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two fee estimates look incomparable

Check whether one estimate is for a simple transfer and the other is for a contract call, whether one includes a priority component, and whether the fiat conversions use the same timestamp and exchange-rate method. Native-token amounts alone do not establish which transaction is economically cheaper.

A concise decision framework

  1. Name the network layer: Solana, Ethereum mainnet, or a specific Ethereum rollup.
  2. Name the event: inclusion, user-facing confirmation, or finality.
  3. Describe the workload: transfer, contract interaction, signatures, compute, and gas requirements.
  4. Record fee settings: Solana compute-unit request and price, or Ethereum gas and priority settings.
  5. State the conditions: congestion, timestamp, and native-token exchange-rate method for any fiat comparison.
  6. Match the policy to the risk: early status for reversible UX, stronger finality for irreversible settlement.

Using that framework prevents the two most common errors: calling a fast inclusion event “finality,” and calling a low historical token amount a permanently cheap fee. Solana and Ethereum can each be the better fit for a particular application, but the decision depends on the exact operation and the settlement guarantee the user needs.
