Short answer: Solana and Sui describe transaction completion differently, so a single “faster chain” verdict is misleading. Solana exposes three RPC commitment levels—processed, confirmed, and finalized—and each represents a different rollback risk. Sui describes settlement through certified transaction effects and reports typical end-to-end finality of 400–700 milliseconds, measured from user submission to a full node’s finality response. That timing is not automatically comparable with a Solana measurement unless the same start event, end event, workload, endpoint, and confirmation standard are used.

For developers, the larger decision is architectural. Solana uses stateless programs with mutable data in accounts supplied to instructions; Sui uses Move and an object-centric transaction model with programmable transaction blocks. Both can execute independent work in parallel, but writable account or object contention can become the bottleneck. Choose based on the confirmation guarantee your application needs, its state-access pattern, and the team’s language and tooling fit—not on an isolated TPS headline.

What transaction finality means on each network

Finality is the point at which an application can treat a transaction as settled rather than merely observed in a node’s current view. The important detail is that Solana and Sui expose different milestones and terminology. A wallet display, an exchange deposit service, and a smart-contract client may reasonably wait for different milestones because their tolerance for a rollback is different.

Solana has three RPC commitment levels

Solana’s RPC documentation defines three commonly used commitments:

#1 Best Overall

Commitment What it means Operational implication
processed The node has processed the most recent block in its local view. Freshest view, but the block can be rolled back if the cluster abandons that fork.
confirmed The block received a direct vote from a supermajority of active stake. Usually close to the tip with a very low chance of belonging to a dropped fork; commonly suitable for routine application requests.
finalized The strongest commitment state, with maximum lockout under Solana’s confirmation rules. Highest confidence, normally farther behind the newest confirmed block.

Calling all three states “final” hides the decision your client is making. A game showing a recent action may use processed for responsiveness and reconcile later. A payment service may wait for confirmed. A high-value settlement system may require finalized. The correct choice depends on the cost of acting on a transaction that later disappears.

Sui uses certified effects and checkpoints

Sui’s consensus documentation describes finality through a transaction’s effects. When a full effects digest is paired with quorum acknowledgements, those certified effects prove settlement finality and the transaction is irreversible. If the acknowledgements are not immediately available, a full node can wait until the transaction is included in a certified checkpoint and use that checkpoint as proof of finality.

This is a different mental model from choosing one of Solana’s three RPC labels. Sui’s client is looking for a certificate over the effects, while a Solana client selects a commitment level for a block and the transaction observed within it. Neither label can be substituted for the other without defining the underlying event.

How fast is finality?

Sui’s documented end-to-end range

Sui’s lifecycle documentation reports that end-to-end finality typically takes 400–700 milliseconds. The measurement starts when the user submits the transaction and ends when a full node returns a finality confirmation. “Typically” is important: the range is a documented operational description, not a guarantee for every transaction, client, or network condition. It also measures the full submission-to-confirmation path, rather than only the internal consensus step.

Solana’s confirmation trade-off

Solana’s confirmation guide recommends confirmed for many RPC requests because it is generally only a few slots behind processed and has a very low probability of belonging to a dropped fork. Waiting for finalized provides stronger confidence but adds lag. The guide says the latest finalized block is typically at least 32 slots behind the latest confirmed block and estimates that roughly 5% of blocks do not become finalized. Those are the guide’s estimates and operational advice, not permanent network constants; conditions can change with software, validator participation, and cluster load.

The same guide explains a practical side effect of waiting for a finalized blockhash. Using an older finalized blockhash can reduce the remaining transaction-expiration window by about 13 seconds compared with using a fresher confirmed blockhash. A client that waits too long before signing, submitting, or retrying can therefore allow a transaction to expire even though the stronger blockhash choice reduced fork risk.

Why no honest single-millisecond winner can be stated

The available documentation does not provide a matched live-mainnet latency study for Solana and Sui. Solana timings depend on whether the client stops at processed, confirmed, or finalized, which RPC endpoint it uses, and whether the transaction is retried after a fork or expiration. Sui’s 400–700 ms statement uses a specified submission-to-full-node endpoint. Comparing it with a Solana block-production interval, a wallet’s screen update, or a block explorer’s display would mix different measurements.

A defensible comparison must state all of the following:

  • the start event, such as signing, first submission, or the first node accepting the transaction;
  • the end event, such as a commitment response, certified effects, or a checkpoint;
  • the confirmation level or certificate being required;
  • transaction type, size, fee settings, and whether failed or retried submissions count;
  • the client, RPC endpoint, geographic path, software version, and sample period; and
  • whether the number comes from controlled benchmarking or observed production traffic.

Throughput claims: benchmark ceilings are not live TPS

Sui’s Mysticeti consensus page reports two controlled benchmark results. In a controlled 10-node environment, it reached 300,000 transactions per second before latency crossed the one-second marker. In another benchmark condition, it reports about 0.5 seconds of average consensus commitment at a sustained 200,000 TPS. Sui explicitly cautions that these figures are controlled tests, not production metrics. They should not be presented as the throughput a public mainnet will deliver for an arbitrary application.

No equivalent, matched Solana-versus-Sui production TPS dataset is established here. A chain’s reported TPS can count different things: submitted transactions, executed transactions, successful transactions, consensus messages, or transactions in a synthetic workload. Batch size, transaction complexity, state conflicts, validator hardware, and whether consensus or execution is being measured can change the result by orders of magnitude.

Claim Measurement conditions How to use it
Sui: 300,000 TPS before latency exceeds one second Controlled 10-node Mysticeti benchmark; Sui documentation, accessed 2026 A benchmark ceiling under the named setup, not a mainnet promise.
Sui: about 0.5-second average consensus commitment at 200,000 TPS Sustained benchmark load; Sui documentation, accessed 2026 Evidence about consensus behavior in that test, not an application-level finality guarantee.
Solana live TPS versus Sui live TPS No matched hardware, workload, endpoint, and confirmation definition established Do not claim a numerical winner without running a controlled, reproducible test.

How the programming models differ

Solana: stateless programs and explicit accounts

Solana’s Programs documentation summarizes its model plainly: “Programs are stateless. All mutable state lives in separate data accounts passed via instructions.” A program contains executable logic, while accounts hold the data that changes. Every instruction identifies the accounts it will read or write, and the runtime uses those declarations when scheduling transactions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This separation affects design. A developer must decide how state is partitioned, which accounts an instruction requires, who can write each account, and how account layouts evolve. Transactions compose instructions and can invoke other programs, allowing an atomic workflow when all required accounts, signatures, and compute resources fit within the transaction’s limits. The model is familiar to teams that think in terms of explicit storage records and access lists, but it also makes account planning part of everyday application engineering.

Solana documentation lists several Rust development approaches, including Anchor, Pinocchio, and native Rust. Existing Rust knowledge can shorten the language ramp, although framework conventions, account serialization, signing, deployment, and RPC behavior still require chain-specific expertise.

Sui: Move objects and programmable transaction blocks

Sui uses the Move language and an object model. Transactions operate on objects with ownership and shared-state concepts that differ from Solana accounts. A developer reasons about which objects are owned, which are shared, how ownership changes, and how object references move through a transaction.

Programmable transaction blocks, commonly constructed with the TypeScript SDK or another supported client, compose calls and pass outputs between them. This makes multi-step workflows explicit in the transaction builder: one call can produce an object or value consumed by a later call in the same atomic block. The model can feel natural for applications that map domain entities to independently owned objects, while teams accustomed to account-centric Rust programs must learn Move’s type, ownership, and ability rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither architecture is universally easier. The relevant question is whether your domain naturally partitions into accounts or objects, how often records are shared and mutated, and which language and tooling your team can operate reliably.

Parallel execution and the cost of shared state

Both networks can obtain parallelism when transactions do not conflict, but they express conflicts differently.

  • On Solana, the runtime schedules transactions using the accounts declared as read or write inputs. Transactions that touch disjoint accounts can proceed in parallel; transactions that require the same writable account serialize around that account.
  • Sui documentation describes parallel execution for transactions touching different shared objects. Independent owned objects can also be processed without the same contention as a single hot shared object.

The practical bottleneck is therefore often the application’s state graph rather than the nominal capability of the consensus protocol. A marketplace with one globally writable order book, a game with a single mutable leaderboard, or a token contract that funnels every action through one state object can create a hot spot. Sharding by user, market, region, or time period can increase concurrency, but it adds routing, aggregation, and consistency work.

Before choosing a chain for performance, model the percentage of reads, independent writes, shared writes, retries, and transactions that must be atomic together. Measure the workload your users will create, not a synthetic stream of independent transfers.

Client and RPC engineering

Solana commitment and blockhash handling

A Solana client must make two related choices: which blockhash freshness strategy to use and which commitment to require when querying or confirming. A fresher processed or confirmed blockhash leaves more time before expiration, but a processed block can belong to an abandoned fork. A finalized blockhash carries stronger history but may be older and reduce the remaining expiration window.

Confirmation code should preserve the commitment level through the whole flow. If a transaction is submitted with a confirmed blockhash but the client later checks only a processed status, the user interface can claim success before the application’s actual safety threshold is met. Conversely, waiting for finalized on every low-risk interaction can make a responsive product appear slow.

Sui full nodes, effects, and checkpoints

A Sui client follows the transaction lifecycle until it can observe certified effects or a certified checkpoint. The full node’s response is part of the documented 400–700 ms end-to-end measurement, so endpoint selection and network path still matter. A client should distinguish a submitted transaction from one whose effects have been certified; displaying the former as settled defeats the purpose of the finality proof.

Production endpoint planning

Solana’s RPC overview warns that shared public endpoints are not intended for production applications. A production service needs an endpoint plan that covers rate limits, authentication, retries, health monitoring, geographic placement, and a fallback strategy. Sui applications likewise need dependable full-node access and monitoring, even though their finality proof is expressed through effects and checkpoints. Consensus design does not remove ordinary client-operations problems.

Choosing between Solana and Sui by application need

When confirmation semantics are the deciding factor

Write down the event that permits the next business action. If a user can retry safely, a quicker commitment may be acceptable. If an exchange credits an irreversible withdrawal, the service may require the strongest available confirmation. On Solana, document whether that means processed, confirmed, or finalized. On Sui, document whether the service waits for certified effects or a certified checkpoint. Avoid the word “instant” unless the measurement and risk threshold are stated.

When throughput is the deciding factor

Start with a transaction-mix model: payload size, signature count, read and write sets, failure rate, and the percentage of transactions sharing a hot state item. Use controlled benchmarks only to compare like with like, then validate with production-shaped load. Sui’s 200,000- and 300,000-TPS figures are useful evidence about a named Mysticeti test setup, but they do not predict your application’s mainnet result.

When team productivity is the deciding factor

Compare more than language names. Evaluate debugging tools, local development, test frameworks, wallet and signing libraries, indexing, deployment procedures, account or object migration, observability, and the engineers’ ability to reason about ownership and access conflicts. Rust experience may favor a Solana ramp for some teams; a domain that maps cleanly to independently owned objects may favor Sui. The documentation establishes architectural differences, not a universal productivity ranking.

When composability is central

List the calls that must happen atomically, the values or objects passed between calls, and the external programs or modules involved. Solana composes instructions and supports program invocation with explicit account inputs. Sui programmable transaction blocks compose calls and pass outputs through the block. Check current transaction-size, compute, and gas constraints in the relevant documentation before committing to a design; numeric limits can change and are not established by this comparison.

A practical evaluation procedure

Teams can make the decision reproducible by following the same sequence for both networks:

  1. Define success. Specify the user-visible and backend events that count as submitted, accepted, confirmed, and irreversible.
  2. Classify risk. Decide what rollback probability is acceptable for each workflow and map that requirement to Solana’s commitment level or Sui’s effects/checkpoint certificate.
  3. Describe state access. Record every read, writable account or object, shared item, and cross-user aggregation point.
  4. Build equivalent transactions. Keep payload size, signatures, business logic, and success criteria as similar as the two programming models allow.
  5. Measure the full path. Capture signing time, first submission, endpoint acknowledgement, execution result, and the selected finality event separately.
  6. Repeat under realistic load. Include retries, failed transactions, hot-state contention, geographic latency, and endpoint rate limits.
  7. Record software and conditions. Log client versions, validator or full-node configuration, hardware, region, sample period, and whether the run is controlled or production-observed.
  8. Evaluate operations. Test rate limiting, endpoint failover, stale blockhash or object-reference handling, monitoring, and recovery from dropped or expired submissions.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Equating confirmed with finalized

On Solana, confirmed and finalized are distinct commitments. A user interface should name the state it has actually observed and avoid presenting processed data as irreversible.

Comparing Sui’s finality range with an unrelated Solana TPS number

Latency and throughput are different dimensions, and a consensus benchmark is not an end-to-end user measurement. Report each figure with its start and end events and its test conditions.

Treating benchmark TPS as production capacity

The Mysticeti figures come from controlled node configurations and are explicitly not production metrics. Application complexity, state conflicts, hardware, and endpoint behavior can reduce realized throughput.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring hot state

Parallel execution helps only when transactions are independent enough to schedule concurrently. Identify and redesign hot writable accounts or shared objects before attributing the resulting queue to the entire network.

Waiting for the strongest confirmation everywhere

Finalized Solana reads can lag confirmed reads by at least 32 slots according to the confirmation guide’s typical estimate, and an older finalized blockhash can shorten the expiration window by about 13 seconds. Use the strongest level where the risk justifies its latency, not as a reflex for every interaction.

Bottom line for builders

Solana offers explicit commitment choices and an account-based programming model in which programs are stateless and mutable state is supplied through accounts. Sui offers certified-effects finality, a documented typical 400–700 ms submission-to-full-node confirmation range, and a Move object model with programmable transaction blocks. Both can parallelize independent work, while shared writable state limits real-world concurrency.

The evidence supports a method, not a universal winner: define the finality event, model state conflicts, benchmark equivalent workloads, and engineer the client path around the confirmation guarantee your product actually needs. Until a matched live-mainnet study uses the same workload and measurement endpoints, claims that one chain is categorically faster are not technically meaningful.
