Samsung filed a preemptive declaratory-judgment action on May 30, 2024, asking a federal court to declare that the Galaxy Ring did not infringe five Oura patents. The Northern District of California dismissed that case on March 27, 2025, because Samsung had not shown the concrete dispute required for declaratory-judgment jurisdiction. The Federal Circuit dismissed Samsung’s appeal on August 15, 2025.
That ended the original case, not the broader conflict. A separate Samsung infringement action against Oura is pending in the Eastern District of Texas, and the companies have also contested Oura patents in Patent Trial and Appeal Board proceedings. Nothing in the California case established that the Galaxy Ring was non-infringing, invalidated Oura’s patents, or barred Oura from later asserting them.
What Samsung filed in 2024
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Samsung Electronics America, Inc. sued Oura Health Oy and Ouraring, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on May 30, 2024. The complaint was a declaratory-judgment action, not a conventional complaint accusing Oura of infringement. Samsung asked the court to declare that its Galaxy Ring did not infringe five Oura patents. The complaint is available at the filed complaint.
Why sue before the product launch?
Samsung alleged that Oura had publicly pursued patent rights against other smart-ring makers and that those actions created an “actual, imminent risk” to the Galaxy Ring. Samsung said the ring was approaching mass production and that U.S. sales were expected around August 2024. A declaration of non-infringement would have given Samsung certainty before committing fully to production and distribution.

Oura’s disputes with companies including Ultrahuman, Circular and RingConn formed part of Samsung’s factual backdrop. Those cases, however, did not automatically prove that Oura had a legally sufficient controversy with Samsung. That distinction became decisive.
What a declaratory-judgment case means
In an ordinary patent-infringement case, a patent owner alleges that a product violates one or more patent claims. In Samsung’s California filing, Samsung reversed the posture: it sought a judicial declaration that its product did not infringe. Federal courts can issue that kind of declaration only when there is a sufficiently concrete, immediate controversy—not merely a generalized fear of being sued.
- Samsung’s request: a declaration of non-infringement concerning five Oura patents.
- Oura’s response: dismissal for lack of subject-matter jurisdiction.
- Central issue: whether Oura had created a direct enough threat against Samsung before the complaint was filed.
Why the California case was dismissed
On March 27, 2025, Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín granted Oura’s motion to dismiss. The court held that Samsung had not shown the concrete controversy necessary for declaratory-judgment jurisdiction. The order is available at the district court’s decision.
The ruling was procedural. It did not determine whether the Galaxy Ring infringed any Oura patent. It also did not decide whether Oura’s patents were valid or enforceable. Dismissal therefore was not a merits victory for either company.

Coverage of the ruling reported that Samsung had an opportunity to amend, subject to meeting the jurisdictional requirements. That possibility did not turn the original order into a finding that the Galaxy Ring was cleared of infringement.
What happened to Samsung’s appeal
Samsung appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The court dismissed the appeal on August 15, 2025, pursuant to the parties’ motion under Federal Rule of Appellate Procedure 42(b), and issued its mandate. The docket is recorded at the Federal Circuit case page.
An appellate dismissal ended that appeal. It was not a ruling that Samsung’s non-infringement position was correct, and it did not end every patent dispute between Samsung and Oura.
The later Texas lawsuit is a different case
The later litigation changed direction. In the Eastern District of Texas, Samsung is pursuing a separate patent-infringement action against Oura under case number 2:25-cv-01181. The docket identifies Samsung as plaintiff and Oura Health Oy and Ouraring, Inc. as defendants. It records a Samsung first amended complaint filed on March 13, 2026. Docket summaries describe claims involving six Samsung patents related to wearable health and fitness technology. A claim-construction (Markman) hearing is listed for June 14, 2027. The underlying case remains ongoing in the surfaced record.

Patent-office proceedings add another layer
District-court litigation is not the only forum involved. Samsung and Oura have also contested Oura patents in inter partes review (IPR) and post-grant review (PGR) proceedings before the PTAB. Records identify IPR2025-00147, IPR2024-01077, PGR2024-00039 and PGR2025-00018. Examples include the IPR2025-00147 record, the IPR2024-01077 record and the public PGR2024-00039 filing.
A final written decision in IPR2025-00147 was issued on July 10, 2026, according to the surfaced record. The available material does not establish the decision’s substantive result, so it should not be described as a win or loss without reviewing the actual PTAB decision. PTAB reviews are separate from the district-court cases and do not, by themselves, decide whether the Galaxy Ring can be sold.
Did Oura sue Samsung over the Galaxy Ring?
The California dismissal did not give Oura a merits judgment that the Galaxy Ring infringed, and the cited record does not establish such a judgment elsewhere. Later reporting described additional Oura patent-enforcement activity involving Samsung and other smart-ring companies, including an International Trade Commission dispute in late 2025. What this means for Galaxy Ring owners
- The California dismissal did not declare Galaxy Ring sales unlawful.
- It did not order Samsung to stop selling the ring.
- The Federal Circuit appeal dismissal did not create a sales ban, recall or injunction.
- The reviewed sources do not establish a current order requiring owners to return devices or stop using them.
Ongoing litigation can create future commercial risk, but the existence of a lawsuit is not proof that a product is currently illegal. Any effect on software, hardware, updates or sales would depend on later rulings, settlements, licenses or agency orders.

Could future Galaxy Ring models be affected?
Several outcomes are possible: the companies could negotiate a license or settlement; Samsung could redesign hardware, software or health-tracking features; legal costs could rise; or litigation could continue without an immediate product change. These are possibilities, not verified explanations for any particular model delay or cancellation. No cited source confirms that Oura litigation caused a Galaxy Ring model to be canceled.
Should the lawsuit change a smart-ring buying decision?
For a buyer, ecosystem and subscription considerations remain more concrete than the litigation itself.

Bottom line
Samsung’s 2024 California lawsuit tried to obtain an advance declaration that the Galaxy Ring did not infringe five Oura patents. Oura succeeded in having that case dismissed for lack of a sufficiently concrete controversy, and Samsung’s appeal was dismissed in August 2025. That result was procedural, not a finding that the Galaxy Ring was infringing or cleared.
The dispute continued through a separate Samsung infringement case in Texas and PTAB proceedings involving Oura patents. For consumers, the available record shows no current Galaxy Ring injunction, recall or sales prohibition; future effects remain dependent on subsequent court, agency or settlement developments.
