Safe Superintelligence Inc.: What Ilya Sutskever Announced and What We Know Now

Yes. Ilya Sutskever announced Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) on June 19, 2024, as a new company devoted to developing safe superintelligence. It is not a consumer AI service, and the company has not publicly demonstrated a system that meets that goal. SSI later raised $1 billion, according to Reuters, and announced a strategic partnership with NVIDIA in July 2026. Those milestones show significant financial and infrastructure backing, not proof that SSI has solved the technical problem it set itself.

What Sutskever announced in June 2024

Safe Superintelligence Inc. was announced as a company, not a nonprofit initiative or a research project inside OpenAI. Its public mission is unusually narrow: build safe superintelligence. SSI describes its intended output as one product—the safe-superintelligence system itself—rather than a sequence of consumer apps, enterprise services, or commercial models. Its official description emphasizes pursuing safety and capability together while protecting the work from short-term commercial pressures. SSI’s official site continues to present that single-goal approach.

The company lists offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv and invites technical applicants to join. Its public materials do not provide a product launch date or a detailed account of its research program.

Who founded SSI?

The three original co-founders were Ilya Sutskever, Daniel Gross, and Daniel Levy. Sutskever co-founded OpenAI and served as its chief scientist; Gross is a former Apple AI executive and investor; and Levy is a former OpenAI researcher. TIME’s launch coverage and the Associated Press reported the founding announcement and background.

In its July 2026 partnership announcement, NVIDIA described SSI as led by Sutskever and Levy. That release does not set out a full current organizational chart or describe Gross’s operating role, so the original founding group should not be read as a description of current day-to-day responsibilities.

Why Sutskever left OpenAI—and what that does and does not explain

Sutskever’s move came amid an unusually public dispute about leadership and safety at OpenAI. He participated in the November 2023 effort to remove CEO Sam Altman, later supported Altman’s return, and announced his own departure in May 2024. OpenAI later dismantled its Superalignment team, which Sutskever had helped lead. Former colleague Jan Leike criticized the company publicly, saying safety had taken a back seat to product development. AP’s account of the launch and OpenAI context covers that sequence.

The timing makes SSI part of the broader debate over whether a frontier AI company can balance commercial product development with long-horizon safety work. It does not establish that SSI was founded solely as an anti-OpenAI venture; the company’s stated purpose is to pursue safe superintelligence.

What “safe superintelligence” means

Superintelligence is a hypothetical AI system whose abilities exceed human intelligence across important domains. It is a future capability target, not a name for a currently available product. Sutskever has also distinguished SSI’s use of “safe” from consumer-facing trust-and-safety work: the ambition is closer to engineering safety for a high-consequence system. TIME’s report on the announcement describes that framing.

The technical challenge is not resolved by naming safety as the objective. A system more capable than its evaluators could be difficult to assess, and researchers would need ways to align its behavior with human goals, detect harmful or deceptive behavior, limit uncontrolled replication or misuse, and make safeguards hold as capabilities scale and systems are deployed. Publicly demonstrating results creates a further tension: disclosing powerful capabilities can itself carry risks. SSI has not publicly shown that it has solved these problems, and “safe” is an objective, not an independent certification.

How SSI says it plans to operate

SSI’s model is a deliberate contrast with the conventional cycle of releasing products, adding features, and expanding into adjacent markets. Its stated approach centers on a single research objective, a selective technical team, and joint progress on safety and capabilities. The company says that focus is meant to insulate research from short-term commercial pressure.

Reuters reported in September 2024 that SSI expected to spend years on research before bringing a product to market and was building a small, trusted research and engineering team. Reuters put its headcount at about 10 at that time; that is a historical figure, not a current employee count. Reuters’ funding report also described the company as a regular for-profit business, rather than a nonprofit.

How SSI was funded

In September 2024, SSI raised $1 billion in cash, according to Reuters. Reported investors included Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Sequoia Capital, DST Global, SV Angel, and NFDG, an investment partnership associated with Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross. Reuters reported that sources close to the matter placed the company’s valuation at about $5 billion; SSI declined to provide a valuation. The $5 billion figure is therefore a source-reported financing valuation, not a company-confirmed figure, revenue, or profit. Reuters and TechCrunch covered the financing.

Reuters said the funding was intended to support computing power, researcher and engineer hiring, and teams in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv, with foundational research preceding a product launch. That plan helps explain why infrastructure matters to SSI: developing frontier-scale systems requires substantial compute. It does not reveal what architecture, training methods, data, or safety techniques SSI is using.

What the NVIDIA partnership adds

On July 27, 2026, NVIDIA announced a long-term strategic partnership with SSI and confirmed that it had invested in the company. NVIDIA said SSI would gain access to its next-generation Vera Rubin computing platform and that the companies expected this access to increase SSI’s compute capacity by an order of magnitude. They also said they would collaborate on current and future compute platforms. The announcement described Sutskever and Levy as SSI’s leaders. NVIDIA’s release is the source for those claims.

“Order of magnitude” means roughly tenfold, but the release gives no baseline compute figure or independent measurement. NVIDIA did not disclose its investment amount, a resulting valuation, a product launch date, or a technical benchmark. The partnership is evidence of strategic backing and planned access to infrastructure; it is not evidence that SSI has produced safe superintelligence.

What is still unknown

SSI’s public materials and the cited announcements leave key questions unanswered. In particular, they do not disclose:

  • Its model architecture, training data, or detailed training methods.
  • Its safety methodology, evaluation results, or independently verifiable technical demonstrations.
  • A product release timeline or revenue model.
  • Its current headcount or current valuation.
  • Whether it has a working system that qualifies as superintelligent.
  • The amount of NVIDIA’s investment or a baseline for the announced compute increase.

That lack of public technical detail makes it difficult for outsiders to assess progress. A narrow mission may reduce distraction, but it also leaves the public with few measurable outputs; a long research horizon may suit foundational work, while making progress harder to judge. And access to more compute is an input to research, not a measurement of safety or capability. SSI’s public statements set an ambitious goal, but do not yet allow an independent comparison with OpenAI, Anthropic, or other frontier labs on safety or technical performance.

What SSI is—and is not—today

SSI is best understood as a privately held frontier-AI research company with a single, long-term stated objective. Its 2024 financing and 2026 NVIDIA partnership give it substantial reported financial and infrastructure support. They do not make it a consumer AI service, confirm a publicly released product, or demonstrate that its safety goal has been achieved. As of the latest public milestone covered here, its technical approach, product timetable, and business model remain undisclosed.
