Apple’s latest verified U.S. promotion ran April 16 through May 16, 2026, and has ended. It offered 10% off selected accessories at participating Apple Stores when customers recycled an eligible device in the same transaction; 2025 coverage described the saving as capped at $20.
What Apple’s accessory discount actually was
The promotion exchanged a recycling action for a discount on a qualifying new accessory. It did not pay the customer $20 for an old device, and it did not add that amount to an Apple Gift Card. The 2026 Apple terms specify 10% off selected accessories. MacRumors described the earlier promotion as offering up to $20 off, so treat that cap as a reported limit for the promotion—not a standing Apple policy.

If the $20 cap applied, a $100 eligible accessory would receive $10 off; a $200 item would receive $20 off; and a $300 item would still receive no more than $20 off. The actual discount depended on the qualifying product and promotion terms. Apple’s 2026 promotion terms confirm the 10% discount but do not visibly state a $20 cap in the available PDF text. The earlier cap and examples were reported by MacRumors.
Trade-in and recycling are not the same

Apple’s regular Trade In program covers qualifying iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and some third-party smartphones. Devices with no trade-in value may still be recycled for free. Cables, cases, chargers, watch straps, and other accessories may be recyclable without earning credit. Do not assume that handing in AirPods or another accessory normally creates Apple credit.

When and where the latest verified offer applied
The latest verified U.S. terms covered April 16 through May 16, 2026. As of August 18, 2026, that promotion had expired; the available terms do not establish a replacement offer. It applied at participating physical Apple Store locations, not through Apple’s website, Apple Store app, Apple Pickup, Ship to Home, or 1-800-MY-APPLE. Recycling and the accessory purchase had to be completed in the same transaction, so customers could not save the discount for a later visit.
What items and accessories qualified?
Items named in the 2026 promotion terms
The 2026 terms identify eligible recycling-device categories as iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. The promotion’s listed product categories included Apple-branded adapters, AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 3, and AirTag one-packs and four-packs. The terms also contain trademark references to other Apple products; those references alone do not prove that every named product qualified for the discount.

Examples reported for the earlier promotion
MacRumors reported examples of discounted products including AirTags, AirPods, Apple Pencil, Apple Watch bands, iPhone cases, and Mac peripherals such as Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard. Those examples describe reported promotion products, not a guarantee that they were all eligible under the 2026 terms or a future offer.

Apple’s ordinary recycling information includes batteries, cables, cases, accessories, monitors, packaging, and other Apple devices. Acceptance for recycling does not itself confer a trade-in value or make an item eligible for a promotion. The eligible list can vary by offer and location; confirm the exact item with the store before making a trip. Apple’s Trade In and recycling page explains its standard program.

Restrictions in the 2026 promotion
- A customer could recycle no more than five eligible devices during the promotion.
- Customers had to be at least the age of majority and show valid photo identification.
- Only new qualifying accessories were included; refurbished and open-box products were excluded.
- Participation could vary by Apple Store, and accessories and colors were subject to availability.
- Resellers, organizations, educational institutions, corporations, and certain employee-purchase transactions were excluded.
- Apple’s terms warned that sales tax might be calculated on the full accessory price, rather than the discounted amount.
- If a discounted accessory was returned, the recycled device would not be returned.
These are conditions of the 2026 offer, not evidence that a future promotion will use identical rules. Check the applicable terms if Apple announces another one.
How to use a similar offer if Apple brings it back
- Check Apple’s current promotion terms and contact the participating store to verify that your device and chosen accessory qualify.
- Bring the device to the store with valid photo ID. Do not surrender it until you are ready to complete the transaction.
- Ask an Apple Specialist to confirm the discount, the eligible accessory, stock, and any applicable limit before recycling.
- Complete recycling and buy the qualifying new accessory in the same transaction.
- Review the receipt before leaving, and keep in mind that a recycled device cannot be recovered if you later return the accessory.
Should you recycle, trade in, or sell?
Recycle through Apple
Recycling is sensible when the item is broken, obsolete, inconvenient to sell, or worth little on the secondhand market—especially if you are already visiting an Apple Store and a matching promotion is active. It is a disposal choice, not a way to maximize the item’s cash value.

Use Apple Trade In for an eligible device
If you have an eligible iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or qualifying Android phone, compare Apple’s estimate with other options before choosing recycling. Apple’s online process involves an estimate and an inspection; its page says devices generally must arrive within 14 days of receiving a new device for the estimated value, and the value may be revised if condition differs from the description. Old AirPods should not be described as normally earning Apple Trade In credit. A third-party buyer may offer cash, subject to its inspection and eligibility rules. For example, Back Market’s first-generation AirPods Pro buyback page advertises up to $20; that is the provider’s conditional offer, not Apple’s recycling value. Missing earbuds or a case, battery condition, and overall condition can affect resale prospects. Compare a live quote with the value of recycling before giving up a working item.

Prepare devices safely before handing them over
- Back up important data, remove personal information, sign out of accounts, and disable device locks such as Find My where relevant.
- Do not hand over a device that still contains accessible personal data.
- Do not mail swollen, damaged, or defective batteries or loose batteries. Follow Apple’s packaging and battery-shipping instructions for any mail-in recycling.
- If Apple quotes trade-in credit, make sure you understand the inspection and revised-value process before sending the device.
