Yes, some Chinese metro systems introduced or tested facial-recognition fare gates in 2019, but the headline is misleading if read as a new, nationwide option. Riders had to enroll in advance and connect a payment account; the face scan authenticated that account at the gate. The documented rollouts were city-specific, and the available reports do not establish which services remain available in 2026 or whether foreign visitors can enroll.
What “pay by scanning your face” meant
A face was not money or a payment method on its own. It acted as a credential to look up a rider’s pre-registered account. In the systems described in 2019, the rider enrolled through a metro app or related service, registered facial information, and linked a payment method. A gate camera then attempted to match the rider to that profile. The metro system recorded the journey and charged the linked account according to its fare rules.

- Enroll: Register through the city’s specified app or mini-program and submit facial information.
- Link payment: Add the bank account, wallet, or other payment method accepted by that system.
- Authenticate at the gate: Let the camera match the rider to the enrolled profile.
- Settle the fare: The system uses the recorded journey to calculate and deduct the fare. In Jinan, a 2019 report said the linked account was charged after the passenger exited.
So “scan your face to pay” compresses identity matching, journey recording, fare calculation, and payment settlement into one phrase. Xinhua’s report on Jinan and its report on Zhengzhou both describe prior registration and a linked payment method.
Where the service was reported—and how far it went
The examples were not one national system. Their scale ranged from a line or a small pilot to a city’s reported metro-wide deployment.

| City | Reported status in 2019 | Scope and details |
|---|---|---|
| Jinan | Operating service from April 1, 2019 | Line 1 adopted 3D facial-recognition gates. Xinhua reported equipment at 11 Line 1 stations; riders registered through the Jinan Metro app and linked a bank account. China Daily’s government portal covered the launch, and Xinhua described the enrollment and fare process. |
| Guangzhou | Two-station pilot beginning in September 2019 | Registration was reported through the Guangzhou Metro app or a WeChat mini-program, with real-name registration. The reports do not establish present-day availability. People’s Daily Online covered the pilot. |
| Shenzhen | Trial at Futian Station in 2019 | Commuters tested face-based gate access; wider rollout timing was unspecified in the report. The South China Morning Post described the trial. |
| Zhengzhou | Expansion to all metro lines announced December 3, 2019 | The city said registered riders could use facial recognition instead of a metro card or phone QR code. At launch, it reported nearly 200,000 registered users and about 10,000 daily face-scan fare payments. Those figures describe the launch period, not current usage. Xinhua reported the announcement. |
Contemporaneous coverage also named Shanghai, Nanjing, Qingdao, and Nanning as places testing or using facial recognition on some lines, but that does not mean every station in those cities accepted face-based ordinary fares. Guangzhou and Shenzhen’s 2019 pilots, along with other city examples, were summarized by Yonhap.
These are historical reports, not a verified 2026 directory. They do not establish that each service still operates, has the same coverage, or accepts the same users today.

What happened at the gate, and was it compulsory?
The face was used to authenticate the enrolled passenger at a gate. Entry and exit data let the system determine the trip, while the linked account handled the charge. Jinan’s reporting specifically describes deduction after exit; the precise gate and settlement arrangements should not be assumed identical across cities.

Facial recognition was presented as an alternative to tickets, transit cards, or phone QR codes—not as a required way for every passenger to ride. Zhengzhou’s announcement explicitly contrasted face entry with cards and QR codes, while Jinan reporting described it alongside ticket and smartphone options. That distinction matters: an optional, registered fare credential is not the same thing as every station camera identifying every passenger.

Why operators promoted it—and what performance claims mean
Operators promoted faster passage and less need to retrieve a card or display a QR code. Jinan coverage reported throughput of roughly 30–40 people per minute in one account; Xinhua separately gave a figure of about 33 per minute and compared it with about 20 for ticket or QR-code services. These are media-reported figures, not independent comparative tests.
Jinan reports also cited a recognition rate above 99.9% and a matching error figure of approximately one in a million. They do not provide an independent methodology that would make those numbers universal performance guarantees. A separate industry-linked account described the equipment as using a 3D camera and resisting attempts based on photos, video, or masks; those too are vendor or operator claims, not proof that every deployment has the same capabilities. See the China Hi-Tech Fair report and Xinhua’s Jinan coverage.

- Potential convenience: A configured rider may pass without handling a ticket, card, or phone.
- Setup cost: Enrollment, identity checks, and payment linking take time and may exclude riders unable to meet local requirements.
- Recovery trade-off: A misplaced card can often be replaced or reloaded; a failed biometric match or an account problem may require staff help. The 2019 reports do not lay out a complete failure-resolution process.
Could a tourist or foreign visitor use it?
The documented systems required advance enrollment; Guangzhou’s pilot was specifically reported as requiring real-name registration. The cited launch coverage does not verify whether foreign passports, international bank cards, overseas phone numbers, or visitors without Chinese payment accounts were accepted. That is unverified, not proof that foreign visitors were categorically unable to use any system.
Before relying on a face-based gate, a visitor would need to confirm directly with the particular city’s current metro service whether enrollment is open to them, which identity documents and payment methods it accepts, and which stations support it. Historical app names and registration channels do not establish current app availability or overseas-user support.

Privacy: the convenience comes with a different data trail
Enrollment-based face payment ties biometric information to an identifiable rider. A linked profile can connect that identity with station entries and exits and with payment records. Unlike a lost card number, a face is difficult to replace if biometric data is compromised.
- How long are facial templates, account details, and journey records retained?
- Who can access them, and are they shared across operators or other agencies?
- How can a rider withdraw consent, delete a profile, or dispute a charge?
- How reliably does recognition work across lighting, camera angles, masks, injuries, and changes in appearance?
The 2019 Jinan coverage quoted local assurances about privacy protection, but those statements are not an independent audit of storage, deletion, access controls, or breach safeguards. The cited reports also do not provide independent demographic testing of recognition accuracy. General station surveillance, law-enforcement face recognition, concession eligibility checks, and an enrolled fare-gate profile are related but distinct uses; a report about one should not be treated as evidence of another.
Alternatives and practical checks
For a rider who does not want biometric enrollment—or cannot complete it—the ordinary alternatives remain the more dependable starting point, subject to local availability:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Single-ride ticket: Useful for occasional trips; it may mean a queue at a ticket machine.
- Transit card: Reusable and does not require facial enrollment, but must be obtained and funded.
- QR-code entry or metro app: Avoids face enrollment but depends on a compatible phone, account, and payment setup.
- Contactless bank card: May suit international travelers where the specific network supports it; do not assume support across all Chinese metros.
Check the city and line before travel. Confirm which entrances support the chosen method, whether registration requires a local identity or phone number, which payment accounts are accepted, and what staffed fallback is available if recognition or payment fails. The 2019 reporting does not specify a universal procedure for failed matches, insufficient balances, network outages, incorrect deductions, profile deletion, or entering and exiting with different fare methods; those details require current, city-specific confirmation.
