There is no announced final-sale date. For US buyers, the practical question is whether a remaining unit is cheap enough to justify older hardware and a shorter, uncertain support runway.
Is the iPad 9th generation really disappearing?
Apple’s current iPad store features the A16 iPad, iPad mini, iPad Air and iPad Pro—not the 9th generation as a new current model. But refurbished and leftover units can remain for sale after a model leaves the lineup. Apple was still listing a Certified Refurbished 9th-generation iPad when checked, and retailers showed refurbished examples as well. Availability can vary by seller, storage, color and location, and may change before checkout. Apple’s current iPad lineup

Apple has not announced a last day to buy this model. “Last chance” is best understood as a warning that finding a well-conditioned unit at a sensible price may get less predictable—not as a confirmed deadline or a sign that software support or service has ended.
What did remaining units cost?
The following are US price snapshots checked August 16, 2026, not guaranteed offers. Condition, seller, location and inventory can change the price or availability.
#1 Best Overall
| Seller and listing | Observed price | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Certified Refurbished, 64GB Wi‑Fi | $269 | Apple says its certified refurbished iPads receive a new battery and outer shell, include accessories and manuals, and carry the same one-year warranty as a new iPad. AppleCare may be available for eligible products. |

| Walmart Restored, 256GB examples | Around $259 | Listing language says accessories may be compatible rather than original; confirm what is included. |

Why the 9th generation can still suit a budget buyer
For streaming, browsing, reading, email, schoolwork and video calls, the 9th-generation iPad retains a useful set of basics: a 10.2-inch Retina display, A13 Bionic chip, Touch ID in a physical Home button, headphone jack, stereo speakers and support for first-generation Apple Pencil. Its front 12MP Ultra Wide camera supports Center Stage. Apple’s battery estimate is up to 10 hours of Wi‑Fi web browsing or video playback, or up to 9 hours on cellular, under its testing conditions; actual battery life varies with use and condition. The Home button and headphone jack are not just nostalgia: they can be useful for someone who prefers a physical control or uses wired headphones. The 9th generation also remains compatible with iPadOS 26, so it is not immediately obsolete. Apple’s iPadOS 26 compatibility list

What you give up compared with the A16 iPad
| Feature | iPad 9th generation | Current iPad with A16 |
|---|---|---|
| Chip | A13 Bionic | A16 |
| Starting storage | 64GB | 128GB |
| Port | Lightning | USB‑C |
| Display | 10.2-inch Retina | 11-inch Liquid Retina |
| Rear camera | 8MP; 1080p video | 12MP; 4K video |
| Front camera | 12MP Ultra Wide with Center Stage; older placement | 12MP Center Stage in landscape orientation |
| Wireless | Wi‑Fi 5; Bluetooth 4.2 | Wi‑Fi 6; Bluetooth 5.3 |
| Apple Intelligence | Not supported | Apple’s comparison lists feature availability and model limitations; check the specific feature, language and region |
| Current Apple starting price | Not sold as a current new model | $349 |
Apple’s comparison page documents these hardware differences. The 9th generation’s display is not fully laminated, and its Lightning port keeps it in an older accessory ecosystem. A 64GB model can fill quickly with games, downloaded video, photos and large apps. Apple’s iPad comparison

Both current compatibility and likely future support matter, but they are not the same thing. iPadOS 26 support is confirmed; Apple has not promised a specific number of future major updates for this model. Individual software features can also depend on hardware, language or region. Do not buy it on the assumption that it will receive updates for a particular number of years.
When is the 9th generation worth buying?
Use the price after tax and any needed accessories, not just the headline listing price. These are buying thresholds based on the observed refurbished prices and the A16’s $349 starting price—not Apple’s official recommendations.

- Good value: A 64GB Wi‑Fi refurb around $180–$220, or a 256GB Wi‑Fi refurb around $230–$280, if the seller, battery condition, warranty and return policy are credible.
- Conditional: A 64GB unit around $220–$270 may make sense with Apple Certified Refurbished status, excellent condition or an unusually strong warranty. A 256GB unit around $280–$325 needs a clearly better seller or condition to justify its price.
- Usually skip: A 64GB unit priced near the A16 iPad’s $349 starting price, or a cellular model priced close to a newer Wi‑Fi iPad unless cellular connectivity is essential.
Do not pay extra just because a new old-stock unit is sealed. A high price does not buy a longer software-support guarantee.
Choose the seller and condition that fit your risk tolerance
Apple Certified Refurbished
This is the clearest option for buyers who prioritize condition assurance and warranty over the lowest price. Apple says certified refurbished iPads get a new battery and outer shell, include accessories and manuals, and have the same one-year warranty as a new iPad. AppleCare may be available for eligible units. At the observed $269 for 64GB Wi‑Fi, compare that peace of mind with the price of the newer A16 iPad.

Retailer-certified refurbished
A retailer listing can cost less, but confirm who actually sells and refurbishes the device. Best Buy pages showed both retailer-sold Certified Refurbished units and other refurbished listings; the seller, condition, return window and warranty can differ by offer. Ask whether battery health is guaranteed, whether the charger is included, and whether a cellular model is unlocked.
Marketplace or restored listings
These can have the lowest upfront price but require the most checking. Confirm the restoration grade, seller identity, battery condition, return policy and accessories. A compatible charger may be included instead of an original one, and a bargain is no bargain if the device is locked, damaged or difficult to return.

- Confirm the exact model and storage. Make sure it is the 9th generation, not an 8th generation or a mislabeled model, and distinguish 64GB from 256GB.
- Check connectivity and regional fit. Verify Wi‑Fi versus Wi‑Fi + Cellular, the model identifier, and—if cellular matters—whether the device is unlocked and compatible with your intended carrier.
- Protect yourself from Activation Lock. The previous owner must remove the iPad from their Apple Account. Ask the seller to reset it and allow setup without the previous owner’s credentials before the return window closes.
- Assess battery and physical condition. Ask for a battery-health guarantee where available. Inspect the screen for cracks, pressure marks and dead pixels; check for bent corners and a damaged Lightning port.
- Test essential functions. Check Touch ID, the Home button, cameras, speakers, microphones and Wi‑Fi promptly so any problem can be handled within the return period.
- Read the warranty and return terms. A documented warranty and meaningful return window are worth more than a small saving from an unknown seller.
- Price the complete setup. Check whether a charger, cable and case are included. If you need a first-generation Apple Pencil, add that cost too; replacing missing accessories can narrow the savings over a newer iPad.

Which iPad should you buy?
- Pick the 9th generation for basic use if you find a well-checked unit at a substantial discount, especially if you value the headphone jack or physical Home button. A good 64GB refurb near $200 or a 256GB model near $260 can be sensible for lighter use.
- Pick the A16 iPad if you expect to keep the device for several years, need USB‑C or more entry-level storage, want newer connectivity and cameras, or the price difference is narrow. It starts at $349 with 128GB; the advantage is newer hardware, not a guarantee of a fixed support lifespan.
- Consider an iPad Air if you need substantially more performance for heavier creative apps or laptop-like multitasking and can spend more. Apple’s current store lists it from $599, so it is not a direct budget substitute. Apple’s current lineup and prices
