Yes—you can use Revolut as a UK bank account, but not every Revolut customer is currently held by the same legal entity. Revolut Bank UK Ltd began a staged rollout in March 2026. New UK customers are generally opened as bank-account customers, while some existing customers remain on e-money accounts until their migration is complete. That distinction affects deposit protection, so check the entity shown in your app before deciding whether Revolut should replace your current account.

For most people, the practical choice is not “Revolut or all traditional banks”. It is whether Revolut is the right main account, secondary spending account or travel and currency account for the way they pay, save, withdraw cash and need support.

What the comparison actually means

“Traditional bank” is not a single product. A fee-free digital current account, a packaged account with insurance, a branch-based account and a student account can have completely different tariffs, eligibility rules and protection arrangements. Any fair comparison must name the alternative account and read its current tariff. The points below therefore separate facts about Revolut from questions you must verify with a particular bank.

Revolut’s UK offering is also changing. Revolut Bank UK Ltd was approved to launch after the Prudential Regulation Authority lifted its mobilisation restrictions on 11 March 2026. Revolut described the launch as the beginning of a gradual transition, not an overnight conversion of every customer. Its 11 May 2026 explanation says new UK customers are set up with FSCS-protected bank accounts automatically, while some existing customers remain e-money customers during the staged migration.

That means two people using the same app can have different legal arrangements. Look in your account details, statements or in-app legal information for the entity holding your account. Do not infer the status from the Revolut brand alone.

Revolut’s UK fees: the “free” plan still has transaction rules

The UK Standard plan has no subscription charge. “No subscription” does not mean every transaction is free. The fee page says free home-country bank-transfer top-ups, local payments and euro payments within SEPA are included, while charges can apply to some non-UK or non-EEA card top-ups, commercial-card top-ups and cash withdrawals above the plan allowance. The app is supposed to show an applicable charge before you confirm a transaction.

International payments can also be reduced by intermediary-bank deductions. Those deductions are outside the simple subscription price, so compare the amount the recipient receives, not only the fee displayed by Revolut.

Published UK paid-plan prices

These are UK prices shown on Revolut fee pages updated 11 December 2025 and stated as effective for existing customers from 13 February 2026. They are subscription prices, not a guarantee that every feature or transaction is unlimited.

Plan Monthly subscription Annual subscription What the price does not establish
Standard £0 £0 It does not remove transaction-specific fees or plan allowances.
Plus £3.99 £40 Check the current allowance and benefits before subscribing.
Premium £7.99 £80 Benefits and limits can change with the plan terms.
Ultra £55 £540 The subscription is not proof that every service is fee-free.

Revolut can change prices and allowances, so check the live UK fee schedule when you apply or upgrade. A paid tier only makes financial sense when the benefits you will actually use exceed the recurring subscription.

Currency exchange and fair-use limits

Revolut says it applies an exchange rate and adds a fee when one applies. Its Standard-fee page describes a £1,000 monthly fair-usage limit for the combined exchange example on that page; after the applicable allowance, a 1% fee is charged. Treat that as a plan-specific term, not a universal rule for every currency, time or account. Check the current in-app quote and the plan’s terms before a large exchange.

Calculate exchange cost over a typical month rather than assuming a travel account is automatically cheaper. Include weekend or out-of-hours pricing if the current terms specify it, the amount exchanged above the allowance and any fee charged by the recipient’s or intermediary bank.

How a named traditional-bank comparison should be done

There is no meaningful “average traditional-bank fee” to put beside Revolut. Choose one actual alternative account and record its tariff, eligibility and legal entity. Then use the same usage assumptions for both accounts.

Build a like-for-like cost sheet

  1. Recurring charges: enter the account fee, any packaged-account price, card fee and Revolut subscription if you select a paid tier.
  2. Everyday payments: count card purchases, direct debits and bank transfers. Verify whether the named bank charges for the payment type you use.
  3. Cash: record how often you withdraw, the amount per withdrawal and whether you need to deposit notes or coins. Compare each provider’s stated limits and charges.
  4. Foreign use: estimate spending in each currency, exchange volume, transfer destination and frequency. Include intermediary-bank deductions where relevant.
  5. Occasional events: add overdraft interest, replacement cards, urgent transfers and cash deposits only if you might use them.
  6. Protection: identify the authorised firm and licence, not just the consumer-facing brand.

Run the calculation for an ordinary month and a high-use month, such as a holiday or a large international transfer. The account with the lower headline fee may not be cheaper after ATM, exchange or transfer charges.

Why broad feature claims mislead

A particular high-street bank may offer branches, cash deposits, a savings range, lending or overdraft facilities that another bank does not. Another may be app-only or restrict eligibility by residence, age, income or credit history. Revolut’s own account explanation describes multi-currency balances and international transfers, but its precise features and limits are plan- and product-dependent. Confirm direct debits, cash services, borrowing and savings availability for the exact account you intend to use.

Can you use Revolut as your main current account?

For a UK customer whose account has migrated to Revolut Bank UK Ltd, it can function as a current account for routine banking, subject to the account’s terms. Whether it is a sensible primary account depends on the services you need, not on the label “bank”.

It may fit as a main account when you need

  • App-based control of balances, cards and transfers.
  • Multiple currency balances or frequent international payments.
  • A simple way to separate spending pots from other money.
  • No monthly subscription on Standard, while accepting its transaction allowances and charges.

Keep another bank as the main account when you need

  • A specific branch or in-person cash service.
  • Cash deposits or withdrawals that exceed Revolut’s practical limits.
  • A particular overdraft, mortgage, loan or savings product.
  • A provider’s established support route or a service your employer or biller requires.
  • Confidence that all of your money is held under one clearly identified protection arrangement.

Do not assume a traditional bank supplies all of those services either. Check the named account’s tariff and eligibility, and keep a backup payment method during any account migration or support issue.

Using Revolut as a secondary or travel account

A secondary account can be a lower-risk way to test Revolut’s app, exchange process and customer support without moving every salary payment and direct debit immediately. Set a balance appropriate to your expected spending, learn the ATM and exchange limits, and retain access to your main account for bills.

A practical travel checklist

  • Check the live exchange rate and any fair-use allowance before exchanging.
  • Confirm the destination supports your card and that you have a backup card.
  • Find out whether the cash machine operator adds its own fee.
  • Use the recipient’s full bank details for international transfers and allow for intermediary-bank deductions.
  • Review the legal entity and protection status of the money you leave in the account.

This arrangement can be useful even when a named traditional bank is better for salary payments, borrowing or branch access. It is a fit decision, not a verdict that one provider is universally superior.

What protection applies to money in Revolut?

Protection depends on the product and the legal entity, not simply on seeing a balance in the Revolut app.

Revolut Bank UK Ltd deposits

Eligible deposits held with Revolut Bank UK Ltd fall under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), subject to the scheme’s rules. The FSCS states: “On 1 December 2025 the FSCS deposit protection rose to £120,000.” The limit is per eligible person, per authorised firm, for eligible deposits at a UK-authorised bank, building society or credit union.

“Per authorised firm” matters. Brands operating under the same banking licence are aggregated for the £120,000 limit. Holding £80,000 under one brand and £60,000 under another brand that shares its licence does not create two separate £120,000 allowances. Check the licence, not only the name printed on the card.

Qualifying temporary high balances

FSCS guidance says qualifying temporary high balances can be protected up to £1.4 million for six months, subject to the scheme’s conditions. A temporary high balance is not an automatic extension for any large balance; confirm that the source and circumstances meet the FSCS rules.

E-money safeguarding during the transition

Some existing customers remain e-money customers while the staged migration continues. Under e-money safeguarding, customer funds are kept separate from the provider’s operational money. Safeguarding is not the same as FSCS deposit compensation, and you should not describe a safeguarded balance as FSCS-protected without identifying the applicable arrangement.

Products that are outside the bank’s FSCS cover

Revolut says crypto, stocks and commodities are supplied through separate entities and are not covered by Revolut Bank UK Ltd’s FSCS deposit protection. It also says some savings products are held with partner banks and have separate protection arrangements. For each balance, identify the product, legal provider, licence and protection regime before deciding how much money to keep there.

Protection comparison: the questions to ask any provider

Question What to establish for Revolut What to establish for a named bank
Who legally holds the money? Revolut Bank UK Ltd, an e-money entity during transition, or another product entity. The exact authorised bank or building society behind the account and brand.
What protection applies? FSCS for eligible bank deposits; safeguarding or separate arrangements for other products. FSCS eligibility and any product-specific exclusion or partner arrangement.
What is the limit? £120,000 per eligible person per authorised firm from 1 December 2025, subject to FSCS rules. The same FSCS framework where the account is an eligible deposit, with licence aggregation.
Are balances combined? Yes, deposits under the same authorised firm are counted together. Check whether other brands use the same banking licence.

Do this check again after opening an account or moving products. Providers can change legal entities, partners and product terms.

Features and access: compare the tasks, not the marketing labels

Payments and transfers

Revolut describes UK accounts with local payments, bank transfers, multi-currency balances and international transfers. The Standard fee page specifically lists free local payments and euro payments within SEPA, while other transfers can incur charges or intermediary deductions. Verify the destination, currency and transfer type in the app before confirmation.

For a traditional bank, check the exact Faster Payments, CHAPS, international-transfer and card-payment rules for the account you name. “Bank transfer” is not one price category.

Cash and branches

If you regularly deposit notes, withdraw substantial cash or need face-to-face help, ask the named provider how those tasks work and what they cost. Do not assume that every traditional bank has a convenient branch, or that Revolut’s card access meets your cash needs. Test the locations and limits relevant to where you live and travel.

Savings and borrowing

Compare the actual savings account, interest terms, withdrawal rules and protection arrangement rather than treating an in-app savings label as equivalent to a deposit with Revolut Bank UK Ltd. Likewise, compare overdraft or loan eligibility, rates and credit assessment separately; a current-account comparison does not establish borrowing terms.

Support and account recovery

Before making Revolut your sole account, test how to report a lost card, challenge a payment and obtain help when you cannot sign in. For a named bank, record its telephone, secure-message and branch channels. Service quality varies by provider and by case, so no general ranking is justified.

A step-by-step decision for UK readers

  1. List your non-negotiables. Mark whether you need salary payments, direct debits, cash deposits, branches, international transfers, multiple currencies, savings, overdraft or borrowing.
  2. Identify your Revolut entity. Read the account information in the app and note whether it says Revolut Bank UK Ltd or an e-money arrangement.
  3. Choose one named alternative account. Download its current tariff and eligibility rules; do not use an unnamed “traditional bank” average.
  4. Model your use. Add subscription, ATM, exchange, transfer, card and occasional-service costs for both accounts.
  5. Check protection product by product. Include the £120,000 FSCS limit, shared licences, safeguarding and partner-bank arrangements where relevant.
  6. Run a small trial if uncertain. Use Revolut for a controlled amount of spending while keeping bills and emergency access elsewhere.
  7. Move payments deliberately. Transfer salary and direct debits only after the trial works and you have downloaded statements and retained backup access.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Calling Standard “free banking”. The subscription is free, but ATM, exchange, card-top-up and transfer rules still apply.
  • Assuming launch day changed every account. The March 2026 launch began a staged rollout; existing customers may not have migrated.
  • Treating safeguarding as FSCS insurance. Identify whether the money is a bank deposit or safeguarded e-money.
  • Applying the £120,000 limit to every in-app balance. Crypto, stocks, commodities and some partner-bank savings products have separate arrangements.
  • Ignoring licence aggregation. Deposits under brands sharing one authorised firm count together.
  • Comparing a plan with an imaginary average bank. Use one named account’s tariff and eligibility rules.
  • Moving everything before testing support. Keep a backup account until cards, transfers, bill payments and recovery procedures work for you.

Which arrangement is likely to fit?

Your priority Starting point Check before committing
Frequent foreign spending and app-based currency management Revolut as a travel or secondary account, or as the main account if your other needs are met. Exchange allowance, applicable fees, ATM access and recipient deductions.
Salary, bills and routine UK payments Either Revolut or a named current account, depending on entity and service requirements. Direct-debit support, payment reliability, customer-service route and backup access.
Regular cash deposits or branch help A named provider that explicitly offers those services. Branch locations, opening hours, deposit method, limits and charges.
Large cash balance An account with clearly identified FSCS-eligible deposits, potentially split across authorised firms where appropriate. Licence aggregation, product exclusions and temporary-high-balance rules.
Investing or crypto exposure Assess the separate investment or crypto entity on its own terms. Do not count those holdings as Revolut Bank UK Ltd FSCS-protected deposits.

Bottom line

Revolut can be a UK bank account for customers whose account is with Revolut Bank UK Ltd, and it can still be useful as a spending or travel account while other customers remain in the e-money transition. Its Standard subscription costs £0, but transaction charges and limits matter; paid plans add recurring costs. The decisive checks are your actual Revolut entity, the product-specific protection arrangement, the named alternative bank’s tariff and the services you use most. Compare those facts and your own monthly transactions before moving your main account.
