Set slippage to the largest adverse price movement you are genuinely willing to accept, then verify the swap’s minimum received amount before signing. On Uniswap’s web app, open swap settings and choose Auto or Custom; in the Uniswap Wallet, use Max slippage. Other interfaces use different controls and limits. A setting that is too low can make the transaction revert while still consuming gas, while a setting that is too high can execute at a much worse price and increase sandwich-attack exposure.
What slippage tolerance controls
A swap quote is calculated before your transaction is mined. Between the quote and execution, the pool price can move because other trades change the reserves, your transaction can wait in the mempool, or the route can change. Slippage tolerance is the maximum adverse movement the transaction will accept during that interval.

Technically, the tolerance creates a minimum acceptable output. If you are swapping ETH for a token and the quote says you should receive 1,000 tokens, a 1% tolerance allows execution only if the transaction returns at least 990 tokens. If the pool would return less than that by the time the transaction executes, the swap normally reverts rather than completing.

Why the number is a trade-off
Too low: more failed transactions
A very tight setting rejects legitimate trades when the market moves only slightly before confirmation. The tokens are not exchanged, but the blockchain still processes the attempted transaction. MetaMask and Uniswap documentation warn that gas can be spent on a failed swap. You should treat a revert as a cost and a signal to reassess the quote, route and timing—not as a reason to keep increasing the percentage automatically.
Too high: worse execution and attack exposure
A wide tolerance gives the transaction more room to execute after an adverse move. Uniswap’s support material illustrates the consequence with a 25% tolerance: the result could be 25% fewer tokens than the preview. That example describes what the setting permits, not a recommended value. 1inch also warns that high tolerance can make front-running or sandwich attacks easier, because an attacker has more room to trade around your pending swap.
Minimum received is the practical check
Percentages are easier to evaluate when converted into tokens. Before signing, expand the trade details and read the displayed minimum amount. Ask whether you would still accept that exact output after fees. If the answer is no, lower the tolerance, reduce the trade size, wait for calmer conditions, or choose another route instead of approving a number you dislike.

Price impact is the change caused by your own trade consuming liquidity in a pool. A large order in a shallow pool can move the pool price substantially even when the broader market is stable. Slippage is the difference between the expected execution and the final execution as conditions change before your transaction settles.

Raising slippage tolerance does not improve a quote with poor price impact. If the quoted price impact is already unacceptable, address the trade itself: split the order, reduce its size, select a deeper-liquidity route, or compare another venue. A higher tolerance only permits the transaction to accept more movement away from the quote.
Set slippage on the Uniswap web app
- Open the Swap interface and connect the wallet you intend to use.
- Select the token you are selling and the token you want to receive, then enter the amount.
- Open the swap settings control and choose Auto or Custom.
- For Custom, enter the percentage that represents your maximum acceptable adverse movement. Do not choose a high number merely to force a transaction through.
- Expand the swap details and inspect the displayed slippage and minimum amount received.
- Review network fees, the route and the price impact. Sign only if the minimum output and total cost remain acceptable.
Uniswap Labs’ web-app documentation says its automatic slippage percentage can range from 0.5% to 5%, depending on network cost and swap size. That is documented app behavior, not a universal Ethereum recommendation. The active interface can change, so confirm the label and value shown on your screen before approval.
Set “Max slippage” in the Uniswap Wallet
- Prepare the swap and proceed to the review screen.
- Open Settings during swap review.
- Select Max slippage.
- Enter the tolerance you are willing to accept, then return to the review screen.
- Check the minimum amount received and confirm the transaction only when that floor is acceptable.
Uniswap Labs’ Wallet help documentation states that automatic slippage ranges from 0.5% to 5.5% and that custom slippage is capped at 20%. These are interface limits, not claims that those values are safe for every pair. A low-liquidity or highly volatile token can require a different decision, and a high cap can permit a very poor fill.

UniswapX: the ordinary setting does not apply
UniswapX swaps use a different execution system, so ordinary Uniswap slippage settings do not govern them. Instead, inspect the minimum amount the interface guarantees you will receive. The route can involve different fillers or paths, and Uniswap says its default router evaluates simulated gas and slippage, pool liquidity and route structure.

Read the UniswapX review panel as its own transaction summary. Do not assume that a Custom percentage selected for a conventional pool swap carries over to UniswapX. If the guaranteed minimum is lower than you can accept, cancel and reassess the route or order size.
How 1inch handles slippage
1inch documents automatic slippage based on the volatility profile of the token pair, along with preset choices and a custom tolerance field. Its help material says the custom maximum is 49%. That ceiling is a product setting, not a market statistic or a recommendation.
- Enter the pair and amount on the 1inch swap screen.
- Open the slippage control and review the automatic or preset value.
- Choose Custom only after checking the quoted minimum output and price impact.
- Confirm that the resulting minimum amount is acceptable before signing.
Because 1inch aggregates routes, the quoted result reflects the selected path and its liquidity. Changing tolerance cannot repair a route that is expensive before slippage is considered.
How MetaMask swaps handle slippage
MetaMask says its swaps typically allow a 2%–3% slippage range and instructs users to adjust it through the settings control while preparing a swap. “Typical” describes provider behavior, not a guarantee for every token or transaction.

- Prepare the swap in MetaMask and open the settings control on the review screen.
- Inspect the allowed slippage and the minimum output shown by the wallet.
- Change the value only when you understand why the quoted trade may need more or less room.
- Review gas and the final minimum received, then approve or cancel.
A reverted MetaMask swap can still consume gas. If the quote has become stale, obtain a fresh quote and check whether the token has transfer fees or other restrictions before trying again.
Comparison of the documented controls
| Interface | Where to change it | Automatic or preset behavior | Custom limit documented | Execution notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uniswap web app | Swap settings; choose Auto or Custom | Automatic range of 0.5%–5%, varying with network cost and swap size (Uniswap Labs documentation) | Custom percentage entry is available; no universal safe value is stated | Expand details to see minimum received; conventional settings do not apply to UniswapX |
| Uniswap Wallet | Swap review → Settings → Max slippage | Automatic range of 0.5%–5.5% (Uniswap Labs documentation) | Custom maximum of 20% (Uniswap Labs documentation) | Minimum output remains the decision point; interface labels and limits may change |
| 1inch | Slippage control on the swap screen | Automatic value based on pair volatility, plus presets (1inch documentation) | Custom maximum of 49% (1inch documentation) | Aggregated routes can differ in liquidity and gas; inspect the route and minimum output |
| MetaMask Swaps | Settings control while preparing the swap | Typical allowed range of 2%–3% (MetaMask documentation) | Adjustment is available through the settings control; an exact universal maximum is not stated | Failed swaps can still consume gas; token-specific behavior can affect execution |
The percentages in this table describe provider-documented interface behavior. They should not be ranked as universally safe settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to choose your tolerance
Start with the output you can accept
Decide the minimum number of tokens you would take before looking at the percentage. If the quote is 1,000 tokens and your personal floor is 995, your tolerance is about 0.5%. If the floor is 990, it is about 1%. This reverses the common mistake of selecting a percentage first and discovering the output later.
Account for volatility and confirmation time
A liquid, stable pair may move little while a transaction confirms; a thin or rapidly moving pair can change substantially. Network congestion can lengthen the interval between signing and inclusion. These conditions affect the chance that a tight tolerance reverts, but they do not justify accepting an output you would consider bad.

Check liquidity and trade size
Compare the order size with the pool or route liquidity shown by the interface. If price impact is already large, lower the order size or divide it into smaller trades if the extra gas and market risk make sense. Slippage tolerance is not a substitute for adequate liquidity.
Include all costs
Evaluate the minimum token output together with network gas, any swap fee and any token-specific transfer fee. A transaction can meet its slippage limit and still be uneconomic after those costs.
What to do when a swap fails
- Refresh the quote. Prices and route availability may have changed while the transaction was pending.
- Read the error and transaction status. Confirm whether it reverted, was replaced, or is still pending. A reverted transaction does not return the gas already consumed.
- Recheck minimum received and price impact. If the new quote is materially worse, do not approve it simply because the earlier attempt failed.
- Inspect token behavior. Transfer-tax tokens, rebasing tokens, anti-bot rules and trading pauses can make a standard route fail or produce less than expected.
- Review the route. Try a deeper-liquidity path or a smaller order when the interface offers alternatives.
- Adjust tolerance only for a reason. Make a modest change that matches the movement you are willing to accept; never keep raising it until the swap succeeds.
- Consider timing. If the market is moving rapidly or gas is unusually high, waiting can be safer than accepting a poor fill.
Why you may receive fewer tokens than the preview
The preview is an estimate, not a guaranteed final amount unless the interface presents a specific minimum-output guarantee. Other trades can move the pool before yours executes, or an aggregator can select a route whose realized execution differs from the initial simulation. Your slippage setting determines how far below the estimate the transaction may go before reverting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrice impact can also make the final result look disappointing even when there was little movement after you submitted the transaction. In that case, the trade itself consumed liquidity; changing the tolerance would not have improved the underlying quote. Token transfer fees or other token-specific mechanics can create an additional difference.
Protection against sandwich attacks
Uniswap describes a Wallet swap-protection feature for Ethereum Mainnet transactions. It sends swaps through a private transaction pool to help protect against sandwich attacks and front-running, and Uniswap says the protection is enabled automatically for Ethereum transactions. Users can still adjust slippage manually.
This is a feature of that wallet and transaction path, not a general guarantee for every Ethereum DEX trade. Private routing does not make an unsuitable minimum output acceptable, and it does not remove smart-contract, token or liquidity risks.
Quick Recap
Before-you-sign checklist
- Is this the intended token pair and network?
- What exact minimum amount will you receive?
- Is the quoted price impact acceptable for the order size?
- What gas and swap fees will you pay, including gas if the transaction reverts?
- Does the chosen route use the expected pool, aggregator or UniswapX execution model?
- Is the tolerance a deliberate maximum, rather than a number selected to overcome an earlier failure?
- Does the wallet show any warning about token taxes, liquidity or unusual contract behavior?
Key points to remember
- Slippage tolerance sets the adverse movement your transaction will accept by defining a minimum output.
- A tolerance that is too low can cause a revert and still consume gas; one that is too high can permit a substantially worse fill and increase sandwich-attack exposure.
- Price impact comes from your trade against available liquidity and is not fixed by increasing slippage.
- Uniswap web, Uniswap Wallet, UniswapX, 1inch and MetaMask expose different controls, ranges and execution models.
- The minimum received shown immediately before signing is the most concrete way to decide whether the trade remains acceptable.
