Reddit announced on November 13, 2014, that CEO Yishan Wong had resigned after about two and a half years in the job. Ellen Pao became interim CEO, while co-founder Alexis Ohanian returned full-time as executive chairman. The stated immediate trigger was a dispute with Reddit’s board over the location and cost of a proposed new office—not a board-ordered firing.
What happened on November 13, 2014?
Reddit described the change as a leadership reorganization. Wong left the CEO position, Pao assumed day-to-day executive authority on an interim basis, and Ohanian resumed a full-time role focused on marketing, communications, strategy and the Reddit community.
The announcement came only weeks after Reddit’s September financing. TechCrunch reported that the company had raised $50 million at an approximately $500 million valuation, figures that describe the company’s position at the time rather than its current value. (TechCrunch)
| Person | Position after the announcement | What that meant |
|---|---|---|
| Yishan Wong | Departed CEO | Resigned after a dispute with the board |
| Ellen Pao | Interim CEO | Led the company while a permanent succession decision remained unresolved |
| Alexis Ohanian | Executive chairman | Returned full-time for marketing, communications, strategy and community work; he did not become CEO |
Why did Wong resign?
The documented immediate reason
Investor and board member Sam Altman wrote that Wong proposed moving Reddit into a new office and that the board disagreed with both the location and the amount the company would spend on the lease. Altman said the board rejected the plan, Wong chose to resign, and the board had not asked him to leave. His account appears in “A new team at reddit”.

Contemporaneous reporting identified the location disagreement as a move from San Francisco to Daly City, although the larger issue was the cost and strategic judgment behind the office decision. (TechCrunch)
Why the office dispute may not be the whole story
Wong later described the office fight as the immediate trigger within a broader, more exhausting disagreement about Reddit’s pace, operating conditions and direction. That is Wong’s own account, not an independently established finding. Forbes published his explanation and separately characterized the conflict as involving a draining tempo. (Forbes/Quora; Forbes)

The most defensible description is therefore that the office disagreement was the documented proximate reason for the resignation, while broader strategic and personal frustrations may have made the dispute decisive. The public record does not prove that the office issue was fabricated, nor that it fully explains Wong’s decision.
Why was Ellen Pao chosen?
Pao was already a Reddit executive involved in business development, partnerships and operations. Altman praised her vision, execution and leadership, and described her appointment as interim rather than permanent. Wong had reportedly hired Pao and supported elevating her, which argues against reducing the change to a personal feud.

“Interim” mattered: the November announcement did not establish Pao as Reddit’s long-term CEO. Day-to-day leadership moved to Pao while Ohanian took on a separate senior role.
What did Alexis Ohanian’s return mean?
Ohanian, who co-founded Reddit with Steve Huffman, came back full-time as executive chairman. The title gave him influence over strategy, communications, marketing and community matters, but it did not make him the company’s chief executive. The arrangement combined an operating CEO with renewed founder involvement as Reddit tried to scale.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did the timing look so surprising?
Reddit was attempting to turn a highly influential but still unconventional online community into a larger business. New financing created pressure to expand infrastructure, staffing and commercial operations, while management still had to preserve the norms that made Reddit distinctive. A CEO departing soon after a major funding round over an office and lease decision suggested a serious board-management alignment problem, even if the dispute itself concerned a practical real-estate choice.

Reddit was also under scrutiny in 2014 over harassment, controversial communities and its handling of stolen celebrity photographs posted in August. Those issues formed part of the operating environment, but Reddit’s contemporaneous explanation for Wong’s resignation centered on the office dispute. Later commentary connected his tenure with the company’s broader governance problems; it does not establish that he was forced out over the photo scandal. (Time)
What happened after the leadership change?
- November 2014: Wong resigned, Pao became interim CEO and Ohanian returned as executive chairman.
- July 2015: Pao stepped down after a major user and moderator backlash that followed Reddit’s firing of Victoria Taylor, a popular employee associated with the Ask Me Anything program. (The Guardian)
- After Pao: Co-founder Steve Huffman returned as CEO. Coverage of that later succession should not be read backward as proof that the 2015 controversy caused Wong’s 2014 resignation. (WIRED)
What the resignation says about Reddit’s 2014 governance
The episode exposed the trade-offs of a fast-growing startup with a strong founder and community identity. Decisions that might look routine—where to locate an office and how much to pay—can become tests of authority when a board, investors and an operating CEO disagree about growth, culture and resource allocation. Ohanian’s return added founder visibility, but Pao retained the CEO role, leaving Reddit with a deliberately divided leadership structure.
Bottom line
Yishan Wong resigned on November 13, 2014, after the board rejected his proposed office plan, according to Altman’s contemporaneous account. The board said it did not force him out. Wong later presented the office dispute as the final spark in wider disagreements over Reddit’s demanding pace and direction. Pao’s interim appointment and Ohanian’s executive-chairman role were a reshuffle—not a shutdown, acquisition or simple founder takeover—and the later 2015 upheaval was a separate chapter.
