Redbox shut down its DVD-rental kiosk business in July 2024 as its parent company’s bankruptcy cases moved into Chapter 7 liquidation. The cases did not start in Chapter 7: Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and affiliated companies filed for Chapter 11 protection on June 29, 2024, and the court converted the cases in July.
What happened to Redbox?
Redbox was best known for renting DVDs through kiosks. Its kiosk rental service ended in July 2024 amid the bankruptcy of its parent, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. Contemporary coverage documented the shutdown; the company’s 2022 acquisition announcement had described a much larger kiosk network, but that historical figure should not be mistaken for the number operating at closure. The Washington Post reported on the shutdown on July 11, 2024.

The available evidence does not establish the precise number of kiosks operating when the service ended. Nor does the kiosk shutdown alone establish what happened to every Redbox app account, streaming service, digital purchase, or customer account.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment completed its acquisition of Redbox Entertainment Inc. on August 11, 2022, according to its announcement filed with the SEC. The parent company and the Redbox brand are distinct: Redbox-related companies were among the entities named as debtors in the later bankruptcy filing.

On June 29, 2024, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and affiliated entities filed Chapter 11 petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The filing included Redbox Automated Retail, LLC, Redbox Entertainment, LLC, and Redbox Holdings, LLC. The petition for Case 24-11442 records the filing and debtor entities.
Why did Redbox shut down?
The shutdown came as the parent company’s bankruptcy moved from a Chapter 11 case to Chapter 7 liquidation. Chapter 11 is a bankruptcy process used to seek a reorganization; Chapter 7 is the liquidation chapter. The court conversion is the relevant change in the case, while the kiosk closure was the end of Redbox’s rental operation. The sources establish this sequence, but do not establish a single specific cause for the business’s failure beyond the bankruptcy context.

- July 10–11, 2024: The conversion order was signed July 10 and entered July 11, according to the Inforuptcy docket index. The cases therefore began under Chapter 11 and later became Chapter 7 liquidation cases.
- July 2024: Redbox’s kiosk rental business shut down as the parent moved into Chapter 7, as reported by The Washington Post.
How large was Redbox before it closed?
Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment’s August 2022 acquisition announcement said Redbox had 36,000 kiosks at that time. That is a company-reported 2022 figure, not a count of kiosks still operating in July 2024. The announcement also described the combined company—not Redbox alone—as having more than 40 million loyalty members and more than 145 free live-TV channels. Those are historical company-reported figures, not current measures of Redbox’s customer base or services. The SEC-filed announcement provides the figures and their 2022 context.

What does the shutdown mean for former customers?
The confirmed outcome is the end of Redbox’s kiosk rental service. The sources cited here do not establish the present treatment of individual app accounts, streaming access, previously purchased digital movies, or every customer record. They also do not determine the treatment of any individual creditor, employee, or asset in the bankruptcy. A kiosk closure is not enough to answer those separate questions.

The Delaware bankruptcy court page lists a subsequent opinion and order dated September 2, 2026, in litigation brought by the Chapter 7 trustee. That entry documents later litigation associated with the case; by itself, it does not show that Redbox resumed operations or establish the final status of every bankruptcy matter. The court’s listing is available here.
