Recorded Future announced it had acquired SecurityTrails on January 4, 2022. TechCrunch reported the price as $65 million, citing confirmation from a Recorded Future spokesperson; Recorded Future’s announcement did not disclose a purchase price. The deal added SecurityTrails’ domain, DNS, registration and IP intelligence to Recorded Future’s threat-intelligence offerings.

How much did Recorded Future pay for SecurityTrails?

The reported price was $65 million, according to TechCrunch’s January 2022 report, which attributed confirmation of the amount to a Recorded Future spokesperson. The company’s acquisition announcement did not state a price, so $65 million is a reported figure rather than a price disclosed in the announcement.

What does SecurityTrails do?

SecurityTrails collects and organizes information about internet-facing assets, including domains, DNS records, registration details and IP addresses. Its data includes current and historical records, which can help security teams see changes in an organization’s online footprint and identify assets that may otherwise be overlooked.

Recorded Future’s support documentation describes SecurityTrails domain and DNS data dating back to 2008. It lists A, AAAA, MX, SOA, CNAME and TXT records, and says historical reverse DNS resolution from IP addresses extends up to 120 days. Those are product details as described by Recorded Future’s support documentation, not an independent assessment of coverage.

Why did Recorded Future acquire SecurityTrails?

Recorded Future said SecurityTrails’ internet-wide asset data would improve visibility into organizations’ attack surfaces—the systems and infrastructure that could be exposed to an attacker. The company said the combined capabilities would support an Attack Surface Intelligence module and help customers find critical assets and shadow infrastructure.

SecurityTrails was not an entirely new partner: TechCrunch reported that it had been a Recorded Future technology partner since 2018. The announcement presented the acquisition as bringing its data and capabilities into Recorded Future’s platform; it did not report independently measured security outcomes from the deal.

What is Attack Surface Intelligence?

In this deal, Attack Surface Intelligence refers to Recorded Future’s planned capability for using external internet-asset data to give organizations a clearer view of their exposed infrastructure. The acquisition announcement described a module to be launched, rather than publishing an independent evaluation of its effectiveness. Later vendor documentation describes SecurityTrails data integrated into Recorded Future domain intelligence cards, available to customers with Threat Intelligence, SecOps Intelligence and/or Brand Intelligence subscriptions.

How does the deal fit Recorded Future’s later ownership?

The SecurityTrails acquisition was announced in January 2022. It is separate from Mastercard’s later acquisition of Recorded Future. Recorded Future’s corporate history says Mastercard closed its acquisition in December, following the announced $2.65 billion transaction. That later change in ownership does not change who acquired SecurityTrails in 2022.
